  • Join Emma Kenny in this intense episode of True Crime Stories as we explore the unsettling case of Tim McLean, a young man whose life was horrifically ended in a most unexpected and tragic manner aboard a Greyhound bus in Canada.
Emma, a respected psychological therapist and criminologist, unravels the series of events leading to this chilling incident, taking us on a detailed journey through one of Canada's most notorious crimes. Emma carefully unpacks the actions and psychological state of Vince Li (now Will Baker), the man responsible for McLean's death, providing profound insights into his diagnosed schizophrenia and how it contributed to this unthinkable act of violence.
Emma meticulously analyses the real-time reactions of the passengers, the response from law enforcement, and the impact of this horrifying event on Canada's public transportation safety protocols. She examines the controversial court proceedings, Li's time in mental health facilities, and his eventual release, discussing the implications for mental health awareness and treatment in the criminal justice system.

My heart breaks for those who witnessed this horrific event. As someone who found a dismembered body, nearly 17 years later, with therapy and meds, I still have nightmares every night. I still have flashbacks of what I saw. Most people don't think about the way this type of event affects the witnesses, thank you for acknowledging their pain Emma. It means a lot to me, and I'm sure it would for them as well.

Years ago I was drinking at a house and some guy I barely knew put a really twisted video on of a man getting decapitated .

People stop taking their meds for various reasons and he clearly needs to be on them religiously. Im so sorry for Tims little boy and his family. Thanks Emma, once again, for your intelect and detailed account of this case. ❤

This man not only brutalized Tim horrendously, he terrorized everyone on the bus. And first responders. No one deserves that life sentence, except for those who were found guilty of a crime. Some will never recover from this horror. While I appreciate the mental health struggles here...the trauma alone of the survivors should be recognized by the world as well. I think because Lee refused to take the meds prescribed, SOME onus is on him. At the very least, this man needs to be monitored for the rest of his life..
I used to travel by Greyhound bus back in college. All up and down the eastern seaboard and being alone and young, I never felt safe doing so.

The problem with schizophrenia and taking medication is that the person can't always understand that the meds are helping them. In fact they often think the opposite; that they will harm them in some way. Fear that people are trying to hurt you is common with that condition and the side effects caused by those medications only serve to 'confirm' their fears.

@@Keeva-if we can have probation officers that insure drug addicts stay off illegal drugs, I think we should have a third party enforce that dangerous people like this DO take their prescribed meds

    • @Keeva-
      @Keeva- 10 місяців тому +1

@@Creepystalker102 The mental health service certainly needs improving. Sadly, more and more non-residential services are closing. It's also harder to get the more expensive drugs prescribed these days. There are slow-release medications for schizophrenia which removes the necessity to take them daily and technically people could be forcefully returned to hospital if they don't turn up to get each dose. But who is going to enforce that? Hospitals and police are already stretched to their limits, at least in the UK they are. All of that said, I do completely agree there should be more outpatient care.

My brother had a schizophrenic break when I was 10. He hacked a man to death with an axe. He served 13 years in prison where he was violated and attacked. He is now more broken than what he was before prison. He lives on the streets as my parents aren't prepared to care for him with his mental health struggles. I’ve had psychotic episodes with bipolar I recognise many of these symptoms with his odd behaviour with his initial decline. People also shun you out of fear. I did not get much help until I attempted to take my own life, after this I was given loads of help and support however after a week the CPN assigned to me went off long term sick (obviously not her fault at all) then the support worker I had has now also gone off sick so once again I am now not supported, I also have episodes of NSSI (non suicidal self injury) so support is essential, therefore this man should 💯 be having continued treatment and some kind of onward recovery package put into place so he is getting consistent treatment and not being able to return to that extreme mental state again and if he does show any signs of change he can get treatment adjusted spend time in hospital making sure he is safe and stable obviously make sure that the public are also safe. This is probably one of the saddest things that I have ever heard. It's not only sad but tragic May Tim RIP and his baby boy is shown what a wonderful person he was 🙏🏽🥰

Wow, this case is so heavy. I 100% agree with you on everything you said. I would not feel safe around Lee at all, even though I also have a huge empathy and understanding for mental illnesses. The fact that he once denied the illness and refused to take medications which led to the murder makes me feel unsafe no matter how big progress he has made and how much healthy he is now. There HAS to be some supervision and I really cannot believe that they just let him go freely. We can only rely on Lee's conscience and hope that he will always keep in mind what he's done, so that it makes him never stop taking meds. But the truth is that no one really can guarantee that.
And all those victims, all the horror... damn, I really don't know if I would let that man walk freely again. The best that I might give him (and there is a big MIGHT) is being highly supervised in a community which is aware of his illness.

Horrific case, you have covered this so well, the backstory and description was the best I've seen on this case! Awful for Tim and his mother, I can see why she feels an injustice. Working in mental health the risk assessing here is ridiculous, for the basic safety of others he should always be supervised!
    RIP Tim.

In the states this guy might have actually got the same sentence Canada gave him, but he would possibly not be allowed to leave the criminal psychiatric hospital they would be committed to. This is how Ed Gein and Andrea Yates were handled. But you are right, in the US, it is really rare to be found not guilty by reason of insanity.

This is one of the few cases i feel that Lee was genuinely unwell and out of his mind. Tim was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Rest in peace Tim. I hope all involved find healing. I hope Lee gets the right care and stays as sane as possible, however he needs restrictions desperately. The fact he has none scares me massively. The nature of his mental health issues means he will so easily think hes better and doesn't need his meds, then someone else will die.

56:23 Hello from Nicaragua 🇳🇮, dear Emma. I had seen this case sometime ago, but you hit it off the park today!! You broke it down in such a perfect way. You gave us a real insight of what was happening to Lee (the scariest man I’ve heard of) mentally but at the same time you share your absolutely justified misgivings of how to treat this very sick guy who can mentally spiral down into psychotic break and kill again. I cannot believe they released him WITHOUT any restraints.
My heart goes out for Tim’s family and his little baby that won’t get to know his father. Thank you so much for this wonderful coverage.

See this is the kind of murder that divides me, I know Lee should have been locked up longer or at least given rules to follow afterwards but it seems like he was genuinely out of his mind at the time and has expressed his great remorse for what happened. I don't know, I feel like unfortunately there is no justice to be had here.

@@TheBub26 I was surprised by what you said so I looked at the Health Canada guidelines and starting next year you can apply medically assisted dying for any disability, or mental illness only if you are in an advanced state of decline that CANNOT be reversed. Not encouraged at all.
Obviously Lee responded well to treatment and would not be eligible, but I agree with the original comment that is seems completely unreasonable that he has zero supervision.

@@TheBub26The option to euthanise mentally ill people is so dystopian it’s scary. People who are mentally ill are much more likely to harm themselves than others. I completely agree that those who harm others should be within an institution or should be monitored for the safety of themselves and others. Euthanasia, however is not something that should be encouraged unless it is the choice of the individual. Not just those who are mentally ill.

Her surviving child stands by his mum and said she was a great mum who loved her kids. She had been trying to get help for her mental health for years but the healthcare system turned her away. I am so glad that I listened to your video. I had heard it covered so many times & its such a horrific one that I had considered just skipping it for today, but I'm glad I didn't. As always, you provided SO much more insight and information that I hadn't heard of at all. This case really hits close to home with me because I know two people who suffer from schizophrenia and both of them have had a lot of moments when they took themselves off their medication. Each of them are known to only take their medications when supervised and it's so sad to see the decline in them when they're off of it. One of them has a really good family support system that had refused to give up on her and would always look for her if she went off of her meds, bring her back home, and try to get her stabilized again. Thankfully now that she's older, she is engaged and with the support of both her fiance AND family, she has been on her medication for years and she's doing incredible! The other person I know unfortunately, is still a little young, but every time he's off of his medication he gets into criminal activity to support himself because he can't work. His family has tried numerous times to help him, but they're so stressed out with his unwillingness to commit to taking his medication that now they've washed their hands of him. It's so sad to see... so hearing that Lee has been left to his own devices is definitely scary because I know all too well what it's done to families of my friends. RIP Tim... ❤

There's no way he should have ever been released. If he had mental health problems and committed that crime, he belongs in a mental hospital. When he was deemed well, is when he should have been put on trial, convicted and thrown into prison never to be heard of again.

(Sorry that I keep asking for this but I'm really passionate about his case, I'd love for you to cover the case of James Prout, no one ever talks about that case, I've only ever found one documentary and it was just all about the killers... James Prout deserved better and I think you could do that, I'll warn you though it's heartbreaking and it stayed with me for a very long time. 💕 Also the cases of Emani Moss and Adrian Jones, as well as the serial killers Randy Kraft, Robert Berdella, the horrific teenage murderer, Joe Clark are definitely ones you need to cover as well, no one talks about them really either, they are cases of true and utter evilness. It would also be really interesting if you did the Washington Snipers and the recently identified Joseph Augustus Zarelli, who was formerly known as "boy in the box" and "America's unknown child")

Schizophrenia is such a tragic illness. My grandmother had it, and it was soooo difficult to get her treatment and keep her on treatments. Most schizophrenics are totally non violent, my grandma never even raised her voice and was the loviest person ever. They’re far more likely to hurt themselves than anybody else. I’m sure if Lee made it back to reality the guilt he would feel would be unbearable.

This is a case that I heard about for the first time about a year and a half ago. I will never forget the way I felt upon hearing it. It was one of the MOST DISTURBING cases I’ve ever heard. I was beyond shocked and disgusted. The anger I felt toward Vince Lee was only exceeded by my rage at the government for allowing him to go free some years later.
I have seen the pictures of Tim afterwards and they are something I will NEVER be able to forget.
This case remains to be one of the WORST I’ve ever heard about, and when I saw that you were going to cover it, Em, I ALMOST thought about skipping it because of how profoundly this case affected me. However, I’m glad I watched because as always, you bring such dignity and respect to some of the most horrifying cases we’ve ever heard about. You didn’t sensationalize this story nor attempt to make it more macabre than it already was (as if that could even be possible here). It was purely because they thought he was a danger to himself. I find it very bizarre that he was released with no further action to safeguard himself or others.
