Tying the Blue Steel Perdigon

- Last winter (January 2023) I was tying a bunch of variations of perdigons on one of those typical experimental January tying nights. I tried out some new tinsels including the iridescent blue Perdigon Tinsel from Semperfli. As I fished each of these variations over the next few months, there was one that kept setting itself apart during my days afield. Trout seemed willing to move to the blue perdigon regardless of its position on my rig. Over the last year, I've tested this perdigon on various rivers with very good success. It has been good at home but was also very good on the rivers in Slovakia at last year's World Fly Fishing Championship. It seems to work best for me fall through spring but it's still worth a shot during the summer as well.

That looks like a fish catching machine. Gonna have to get some of that blue perdigon tinsel. I really like the trick with the micro tubing as well. Gonna have to do that on my perdigon flies now. Thanks for sharing this fly and teaching an old dog a new trick! Tight lines!

I definitely love the creativity that we can have tying fly. I was just thinking about this problem (wrapping the body of the fly with some material that is something other than thread or mono so that the body remains the same color)

I stopped using resin with tinsel because 1) It doesn't adhere due to tinsel's slickness 2) Since the tinsel is slick it sicks as fast or faster than resin 3) it is actually thinner. Medium size tinsel and UTC wire in dull colors makes them bullet proof. I love tan and white small wire and wish it was available in x-small.

Very interesting fly. Have you by chance tried iridescent purple? Purple seems to work well here in Utah.
When tying perditions, is there a hook size that you use the most?

I use the iridescent purple on my Diabaetis perdigon. It works well.
I don’t have a specific size hook that uses but I tend to stay fairly small with perdigons. I fish mostly (true) size 16-20 hooks. In the fulling mill 5125 in the video, that ends up equating to size 20-24 hooks.
Learn a lot for your videos so many thanks but I am not too clear on why the tubing is necessary - I get the idea of resin not adhering but is it really necessary? - i.e does the resin stick that much better?
For me it has made a very big difference in the resin not chipping off while fishing. And it will keep the fly together so you can still fish it if the resin does happen to come off.
Do you see a difference in adding a black wing case vs no wing case? I’ve tied them for years with no wing case and have had success but have not ever fished them with the wing case.
Tubing was a great idea!
It’s hard to say one way or the other since I can’t really design a legitimate experiment to test whether it makes a difference or not. I do like the added contrast of the wing case so I add them most of the time.

I was using a light corzuno but any corzuno, pardo, or aconchado would work fine.
Nice one, can you swap 5x tippet for the tubing?
My preference is definitely still the micro tubing but you can give tippet a try. My experience is that tippet will often slip on bare tinsel. Also, if the resin does chip or come off, the tippet can get cut by a trout's teeth fairly easily.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817 I have also found that tippet is a poor material for tying. It usually is the first thing to go on a fly.I still prefer UTC Wire in dull colors but micro tubing is and stretch cord for jewlery is great.
When does the Magnum perdigon come out?

Well with the Iron Lotus and a Blue Steel there really needs to be a Magnum.
STOP I have been using blue for YEARS because A) it works and B) No one else used it. Now there is a lot of blue flies out there :)

What's the difference between this fly and the gasolina?
The color profile is completely different than a gasolina. The Blue Steel is a lot brighter than a gasolina in addition to being blue.
@@tacticalflyfisher3817On camera it looks almost indistinguishable from a gasolina variation. I'll have to tie some up and see for myself! I'd imagine it is slightly different to the natural eye. Thanks for sharing!
