  • The second in my series of tutorials for the flies used by Team USA during the World Championships in Spain, this is the Penny Perdigon. It is a pattern which Pat Weiss came up with back in 2014 but there are similar versions I have seen from European tyers as well. In 2023, this pattern will be available commercially on our site from Fulling Mill as well.
    Find the materials for this fly here: www.tacticalfl...
    You can read the blog post I wrote on wing case positioning at this link. www.tacticalfl...

    Man the tip to use the thread for ribbing to help the uv resin adhere is incredible! Thank you so much for sharing that! Great fly also!!

      It's been a useful addition to perdigons for me since it gives the resin something to grab onto. Hopefully it will help you as well Rich.

    I have seen pat use it many times before. He gave me a few a couple years back and I forgot how well they worked because I wrecked fish on it. Time to buy the material for it and crank them out

      @@tacticalflyfisher3817 Devin if pat fished you know it’s good. I have picked up a lot from looking at his flies as well as fishing with him. I see him every once in awhile while I’m out fishing in central pa. His leader setup is also very interesting and it works very well.

    Would love a video on how you fill your euro fly box. It's tying season and would love some thoughts on what I should tie to fill my box.

    They sell CA glue accelerants. The insta-set stuff from Bob Smith Industries is very good. One tiny spritz and the glue will set instantly. You could either do each fly as you're tying or set up a bunch on that foam and one shot of the accelerant will set them all.

    I love this series of fly tying tutorials. Thanks. You asked for suggestions, so here goes. I'd love to know the dressing of Pat Weiss's BP (light and dark), and perhaps a tutorial on how best to tie them. These flies seem similar to the Penny Perdigon, but the body and ribbing appear different. Any help would be appreciated.

    Super glue on the thread wraps and wrapping the tinsel while the glue is still wet has a similar reinforcing property if for some reason you don't want a rib (or a body coating). I do it on all tinsel-bodied nymphs.

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 роки тому +1

      What I'm concerned with in this case is getting the resin to stick to the slick tinsel. If you're using the superglue under the tinsel, that will help hold it to the hook, but I doubt it would help the resin stick to the outside of the tinsel.

    Thanks Devin - great video as usual. Is using a small copper wire an option instead of the dubbing loop?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 роки тому +1

      You could use the copper wire I'm sure. I personally like the dark ribbed effect that the dubbing loop gives the fly.

    I've tried 3 bottles of the fly tying zap a gap...it glues itself closed quite quickly after using it. The last one was on the 2nd fly. Is the locktite better?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 роки тому +1

      Loctite is better at avoiding that issue. One thing that can help with either bottle is applying some dubbing wax to the threads or top of the bottle so that the glue can't stick to the lid when it is screwed on.

    Devin no semi automatic reel in the post. I had asked if you used them in below freezing weather and never got a response. Have you tried and decided they are a no no in the winter?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 роки тому

      I had another rod with a semi auto reel on it on the bank. I mix things up a lot to test new equipment and confirm my preferences.
      Semi auto reels will freeze up if you get them wet but if that happens you can usually melt them in the water and then zip them a few times to keep them from refreezing.

    Non-tier here: what does the black spot up front do? I have plenty of perdigons with it but don’t know what it does for the fish. When would you use a different color like red or orange?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 роки тому +3

      Joe, If you look at a lot of mayfly nymphs, they have a dark wing pad just before they hatch. The black resin is supposed to represent that aspect of a mayfly nymph. It also adds a bit of contrast to help set it apart in the drift. You could certainly use other colors with success as well.

    Am I cheating if I skip the black resin and just use clear UV and then come back in with a black marker?

    • @tacticalflyfisher3817
      @tacticalflyfisher3817  2 роки тому

      The black marker generally comes off pretty easily. If you are going to do it that way try a coat of clear resin, then the marker, and then a bit more resin on top.

      I was using a 2.5 mm inverting bead. The hook was a size 16 Dohiku 303 but it’s the size of an 18 in most other hooks since it’s a very short shank hook.
