I’ll never forget when my previous hamster named Andy became a senior citizen. Andy was a winter white dwarf hamster who I got in March 2020 when the pandemic hit. I was 21 at the time and he was my first hamster. When I brought him home, my mom and brother automatically fell in love with him due to his cuteness. My brother favored him a lot and Andy bonded with him. He was an affectionate hamster as he licked my hands whenever I held him. Once Andy escaped his cage before he started to live in a bin cage permanently and he crawled on my dad. Andy liked my dad and often crawled on him and my dad would be caught holding him despite his asshole nature. In July 2021, Andy ended up becoming a three legged hamster. He broke his leg and I had to take him to the vet. I was told they couldn’t put his leg in a cast due to him being a tiny animal especially as he would’ve chewed it off due to hamsters being chewers. To add to it, his leg was revealed to be broken in four different places. That’s how bad it was so he had to undergo surgery to amputate his leg. He recovered amazingly and for a three legged hamster, he functioned well. Close to Christmas, Andy was hit by old age. He wouldn’t come out as much as he used to and he started to lose hair. He stopped running in his wheel like before and that’s when I knew it’d be his time to go. I spent a month knowing he’d be gone soon. January 30th, close to 9:30 pm, Andy had passed away. That Sunday left me sad. He sat in his bowl that Sunday afternoon and didn’t move and he felt cold and limp in my hands. That’s when I knew he was going to die as he was old and I couldn’t do a damn thing about it. He was buried in the backyard next to my other deceased hamster named Omelet, a Syrian who died in December 2021, a week before Christmas. I lost two hamsters about a month apart from one another. Andy was two around the time of his death and Omelet was 1 year and 9 months old.

When hamsters die they usually go into rigor mortis, but once in a while when the temperature is too cold they "hibernate," or really go into toropr. We know how difficult it can be once they come to the retirement age, and it really stinks when they leave us, but while they're with us there's just sooooooo much joy!!! It’s so good to so Miso again! She’s is old, but she’s still got it!! My friends hamster, is 2 years old, and still lives in a teeny cage with no upgrades for her age… but somehow their hamsters is doing just fine!

awww... my hamster died a few months ago. he was quite young but he was from a pet store so his genetics probably weren't the best. i hope to have another hamster in the future but it no longer fits into my current lifestyle. i love misos enclosure and she is so cute!
