Larry said his best game ever was the 6th NBA finals game in 1986 against the Houston Rockets. Many say it is the best full game (defense/offense/clutch) ever played by a single player. Check that one out. If you go by stats it looks like a normal game for Larry, but when you watch him all over the court playing full heart and anticipating every move it takes your breath away. He himself said he was the most "prepared" for that game than any other game he ever played.

Not only on the court as a rookie when Bird was selected over Johnson for the Rookie of the Year award, the data backs that decision up. In the 1979-1980 NBA season, Bird averaged 21.3 points, 4.5 assists, and 10.4 rebounds a game in 82 games. Then for the rest of his career he owned people. Then he went on to be coach of the year after he retired, and quit coaching out of respect for Mchale, and went on to become executive of the year for the pacers. Highest Basketball IQ of any man ever on or off the court and the best trash talker as a player there has ever been. Bird was so good he constantly told his opponents what he was going to do and where he on the court he would do it and they still couldn’t stop him.

Problem with guarding Bird up close is a lot of people don't know he had a really quick first step. You get close, he blows by you. Or he fakes a shot, gets you in the air, blows by you. You give him a tiny bit of room, he shoots. It's a pick your poison.
Atlanta had a ton of good players believe it or not. Dominique Wilkens, Antoine Walker, Tree Rollins, Doc Rivers, Eddie Johnson, and such. They didn't have a terrible roster, but they did suck that year, going something around 34-48.

THAT exactly is what I try to impress upon people. He didn't look particularly fast, but he had a very quick AND LONG first step. He was just able to get out in front of people by faking passes (and it's not like you couldn't not respond against that, cause assists...) and then just blowing past them. AND that is what made his jab step effective. Everyone that sees him do that is like, "Oh, why'd he fall down...Bird ain't fast..." Well, it's because Bird presented a multitude of threats. He could indeed drive past you if you didn't respect that quick first step, especially in tandem with ball fakes. He could just shoot it in your face if you watched him do that. Yeah, 90/50/40 was real with Bird. Oh, and rebounds...he averaged double digits for his career. What else do you want?

After that amazing shot that was disallowed by the foul and the Hawks bench was high-fiving that Bird made the shot, Hawks coach Mike Fratello played that clip of the guys on the bench celebrating Bird about 30 times, stopping the videotape, rewinding it, playing it, rewinding it. Another thing is that Larry Bird is NOT some skinny guy, he is a legitimate 6'10" and built pretty solid. I never met him, but I saw him close up at Madison Square Game before a game against the Knicks and I was shocked. There's another great clip out there about when the Dream Team was getting ready for the Olympics, a select college team with Bobby Hurley, Rodney Rogers, Chris Webber and others was put together to scrimmage with the Dream Team. When they met Larry in the hotel corridor, they didn't realize how big he really was. After they said hello, he told them to get plenty of rest because the pros were going to wear them out. After the first scrimmage, where the pros kind of phoned it in, the college guys were beating them by about 15 points when Chuck Daly stopped the scrimmage erased the score read the pros the riot act. At the next scrimmage, Rodney Rogers tells Larry he hadn't hit a jumper since 1984. Magic heard this and got pissed. Rogers was guarding Bird and Magic fed him about 9 in a row and Bird told Rogers exactly what he was going to do and did it in his face. After that he asked Rogers, "was that like '84 ?" And you have to remember that Bird retired right after the Olympics because of his back and had to have some groundbreaking surgery to repair several bones in his spine so he could walk, sit and lie down normally. He was in agony literally every day since 1986 I believe. I often think of what might have been if Bird had played his whole career pain-free. It's kind of scary to think about it. That's why I say that Larry in his prime today would embarrass the younger players of today.

And if Dominique guarded him they were in trouble. Nique couldn't guard him any where. They even tried Doc Rivers guarding Larry a little in this game but the size difference was too much. I was fortunate to have been around to watch basketball in the 70s and 80s. I even got to see Larry Bird play live a couple of times. I was a NY Knicks fan, but never missed a chance to go see a game when the Celtics were in town. The minute Larry walked onto the court, you knew you were going to see something special. As I've gotten older and the NBA has changed, I can't really say it excites me anymore. I like the old days when the tough guys played and yeah, maybe sometimes it got a little rough, but the refs let them work it out. It was the days when the guys played for the name on the front of the jersey, not the name on the back. In my opinion, Larry Bird is the greatest to ever play the game. Thanks for your appreciation of him.

Another thing to love about Larry Bird: he stayed with the team that drafted him for his ENTIRE NBA career! He didn’t chase the money or the glamour of some of the other more desirable warm weather markets. He loved basketball and he loved and was loyal to his fans in Boston. And the fans loved him back. Bird’s retirement ceremony at Boston Garden was NOT on a game night - and the place was filled to the rafters anyway. They knew they were seeing the last of one of the greatest players to EVER play the game. 30 years later, looks like the fans were right.

Bird was insanely good. I love how he would talk trash - and then back it up 100%. There was a game where Bird and Kareem had a bit of a disagreement (shall we say) early on. It got pretty wild after that. Ultimately, things came to a head and went south from there. Not too long after, Kareem fouled out of the game. Bird could get under players skins like no other - and it really helps that he backed his shit up. Of note is that even with 60 points in this game, he passed the ball almost as often as he shot. As has been said, the man could control a game without ever having to touch the rock.

I appreciate your brutal honesty and transparency. So many people formulate an opinion and refuse to look beyond that. Let us never forget that Bird would literally tell the defensive player or even the other bench and coach what the next play was going to be and he would still execute it. MJ, Wilt, no other past player did that and forget about current players doing it in the offensive friendly rules we have today. JS. Love how the banners on the scorer's table are just hanging from the top, lol, all of the LED & the we have today. The ATL bench layers' reactions (and their coaches as well) show two things... #1) How great of a performance Bird was actually having and 2) How BIG of fans of the game they actually were. ATL had one of the best defenses that season but they were so enthralled with the game itself (the bench players at that point) that they couldn't stay in their seats out of pure joy for the game and having a front row seat to the performance off the "Hick from French Lick", self-described nickname... the "Legend" nickname came from other players. When you are in high school and go by "king" anything, think about it.

What a great era- at one point Larry, Magic, and MJ all in the league at the same time. Was a great time to be the teenage basketball fan I was at the time. I was a Sixers fan, so Larry was often killing my guys (with Dr J, Moses Malone, and later a young Charles Barkley on the same team). But I couldn't deny the greatness of those Celtics teams. And although Bird was clearly the superstar, make no mistake - those 80's Celtics were teams. Especially with Dennis Johnson, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish at their respective positions. Dennis Johnson was a brilliant pure point guard who ran the offense seamlessly - be sure to look who was feeding Bird most of the time on those no-hesitation plays. McHale was quietly one of the most dominant big men at the 4 or 5 position. And Robert Parish selflessly fought the hard battles down low, both rebounding and on defense inn General. Against HOF centers like Kareem, Moses Malone, and Hakeem Olajuwon. HATED the Celtics back then for always coming out ahead of my Sixers, but couldn't deny the greatness. And with the years having passed I learned to love that team, too. And the 80's Celtics-Lakers rivalry - amazing beyond description. But I've gone on way too long already 😊

They mentioned it briefly, but the only reason Bird went for 60 is that McHale had set a Celtics record with 56 a couple of weeks earlier, and Bird gave him grief because he didn’t go for 60. Bird could have scored 60 often if he had so desired, but preferred to get everyone involved and save his best moments for the fourth quarter. From 1983-1986 Bird won three MVPs, took the Celtics to the Finals three times, won two championships, and won two Finals MVPs. He looked like the GOAT before he developed a bad back while building a driveway for his mother in French Lick, Indiana.
