    Personaly I've never been burned out by the traditional formula, I really dont know why, maybe its because the reason I played Zelda games was strictly for the dungeon and story, so I didn't really care how the structure was as long as the dungeons and story was good. I also got into Zelda at around 2010, which meant that most Zelda games were out already.

    I absolutely do not see the “restricted access to the open world” until towards the end of the game as a downside of the classic formula. I think not immediately being able to go to every place on the map at the beginning of the game is actually a good thing. It makes for some really great moments when you obtain a new method of traversal. In A Link to the Past when you get the power glove that allows you to move rocks, suddenly you remember all sorts of places around the map where you saw rocks you couldn’t move, and you see the whole world in a new light. That kinda thing makes getting a new and useful item or ability exciting! In BotW and TotK (I love them both, I really do) there’s nothing like that. You can reach any part of the map at any point, go anywhere…it’s boring. There’s never a moment in those games where you suddenly see the whole overworld in a completely new light. Increasing health and stamina isn’t really as exciting as getting a hookshot, for instance, and cooking meals to brave cold environments etc. just doesn’t hit the same. I do love both games, but there’s absolutely something missing with a “true” open world. Aonuma is so, so wrong about this. It baffles me that he can’t see it.

      The biggest thing I've noticed is players never figured out that it's not actually 1 to 1 motion controls. It has to deal with the remote being the center point, not the player. So in reality, you only need wrist flicks to swing. The real concern is not twisting your wrist. Because if you swing left but your wrist is twisted 90°, the game will register swinging up. I bet most players taking note of this would dramatically reduce their motion control issues; unless there's too many bluetooth devices in the room etc.

    • @AnthonyDGreen
      @AnthonyDGreen 23 дні тому +1

      @@hist150project5 fair. Honestly none of them does everything Ocarina does as well or better. Majora is like perfect side quests. All of the pre-BotW 3D Zeldas have good dungeons. I actually felt exploration was best in Wind Waker. Twilight felt vast but sparse. I wanted it to be OoT HD but so much of the charm of ocarina was just missing for me. Didn't care for the art style, missed my Kokiri and Gerudo. But both Twilight and Skyward failed to get me really invested in the races like Ocarina did. I really think the childhood part of the game that introduces you to each of the races in peace-ish with a problem, made me feel so much more for them in the adult era when each race is truly terrorized by Ganon. The races were already under twilight when you encounter them in Twilight and I never really felt bonded to them. Because you're a wolf or they're in spirit form the Hylians barely know you're there. And Skyward was as bad or worse. Those jellyfish were nothing compared to the Zora.
      I didn't like the narrative of TP or villains as much as in Skyward and I thought the bosses were too easy but I appreciate it more over time. It added a lot of environmental diversity. I wish the dungeon items were as multipurpose as they were in WW or SS.
      I guess I really wanted TotK to be my perfect 3D Zelda balancing all the things I love about Ocarina but alas my search continues!

    While I understand the frustrations on the gameplay and control mechanics on the Wii, Skyward Sword served as an amazing origin story of how everything began.
    The details of how the Master Sword is forged. The romantic dynamics between Link and Zelda. Both are the reincarnations of the Goddess Hylia and her first hero. Zelda finds out her true calling and she is reluctantly forced to give up her desires for the benefit of safeguarding the world. Fi being an amazing companion. Groose had an amazing character development of the course of the game. Impa has an amazing design as the Agent of the Goddess. The Triforce. Demise place a curse on them of death and reincarnations. And how the land of Hyrule is built.
    I really like this concept of the game. And if weren’t for the commercials Robin Williams is in, I wouldn’t got involved with this. RIP legend.

    I love Skyward Sword and the new open air Zelda games, but people are right in their criticisms for the game. People are now grouping "traditional" Zeldas altogether, but Skyward Sword does not have the same formula as Ocarina of Time. The latter has a lot more real freedom that has consequences for progression while Skyward Sword has no real freedom at all. For me, I found Skyward Sword to be a breath of fresh air as I felt that with Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, that freedom became an aesthetic only, disguising very linear games that did not want to admit they were linear.
    Skyward Sword, on the other hand, was unashamedly linear and leaned into it with every facet of its design. It may not be what fans wanted, but it was a considered choice that enhanced many aspects of the game, particularly its inventory. Skyward Sword uses its full inventory throughout the full runtime of the game, while Twilight Princess often restricted item usage to the dungeons they were obtained.
    I think that particular idea of making the inventory relevant for the whole game has been well integrated into the open air Zelda games, so I don't see Nintendo returning to the well of Skyward Sword ideas. I think they would benefit only by looking at those dungeons again and seeing how to implement those kind of designs in the open air format.

I replayed every Zelda game at least once or twice, except Skyward Sword, because when I tried do to it, I barely left the beginning of the game. Skyward is my 3rd favorite Zelda after Ocarina and Majora. But I love all the 3D Zeldas, except Twilight, which I don't love but I like and it's growing on me. They each have things that stand out and things they could improve, it's just that Skyward's shortcomings are a little easier for folks to separate and bandwagon on. I'm glad to hear that younger fans are coming around on this game. It's like the Star Wars prequels. When you don't have the bagged of failed expectations you can enjoy a thing for what it is. I think we're seeing some of that dynamic play out with Tears right now.
    What's so weird today is hearing folks complain about TotK/BotW and say they wanted deeper lore, better dungeons, more enemy variety, a stronger linear story, traditional dungeon items, and then hearing them say they don't like Skyward Sword. I don't understand how you can feel both of these things at the same time.

    The Zelda series is what got me into gaming as a little kid. I started with Ocarina of Time, and grew with the series from there, playing every major 3D title more or less as they came out. And I *loved* Skyward Sword. The game has always had flaws, but I think people have largely misidentified them. The flaws were things like the mandatory motion controls, Fi never shutting up, and having to re-learn what an Amber Relic is about 140 times across a single playthrough (all of which were fixed in the HD remaster). A tightly-designed world focused on dungeon-exploration and combat isn't an objectively bad thing, and I don't think it was fair of people to claim the game was bad simply because it wasn't trying to be the thing they wanted. And Skyward Sword executed this formula just as well--if not moreso-as past titles. But people weren't really looking at what the game actually was, only at what they personally wanted it to be. SS was a more-than-worthy celebration of the Zelda series, and it stands equal with OoT, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker in my heart.

    I used to not like this game as a zelda game, but Chuggasconroy's LP showed me how much character there was. Honestly an incredible entry for whats supposed to be the kick off to the never ending battle between Link and Demise. Zelda also is one of the best in the series, being a *literal goddes.*

    Skyward Sword, while not my favorite Zelda game, had some of the best design ideas I have ever seen. It created a deeply attractive world and some of the best dungeons in the entire franchise. I just wasn't crazy about the motion controls or the bosses.

    I think the main issue with the open world formula is that its just to much. Games now a days want to take 150 to 200 hours to complete and the old games didnt do that. So it was more flexible when it came to time investment. But we wont see a traditional Zelda game most likely ever again. And that makes me a bit sad. Alot actually. 😢

    see, i’d still definitely rank SS as my least favorite traditional 3D zelda game, but i maintain its a great game. mind you i played it on the switch, and i know there’s annoyances in the original that were fixed for the remaster, but the design of the game is overall fantastic. i think its main issue was just in how *hard* it leaned into the old formula. by taking the formula and streamlining it so much to the point that there’s not even really a proper overworld (the sky ends up feeling like a decently contextualized level select honestly), plus making the areas on the surface just feel like dungeons rather than open areas to be explored, something that had been an understated but very important part of Zelda to the fans ended up just not really being there at all. motion controls wouldve always caught flack no doubt, but had the team gotten to make TP2 like they initially wanted to, and had an overworld design in line with what TP had (not the same like how totk reuses botw’s map, i mean a different map using the same design principles), fan reception would have been far better

    So... I will admit, I am one of those who absolutely hates what Skyward Sword represents, in that while simultaneously being an (arguably worse) departure from the rest of the series in terms of lore and aesthetic, Skyward Sword also embraces the worst aspects of its predecessors: its overbearing linearity, its over-reliance on cinematics to drive the events of the game, and the reliance on one-use gimmick to determine item utility.
    In contrast, I think that Breath of the Wild, while a solid base to begin anew from, still has problems that were expected to be resolved in the sequel but were rather exacerbated by the addition of NEW mechanics... potentially indicating a rather disappointing trend I see moving forward for the series where open-air sandbox "FREEDOM" is the name of the game. In my opinion, Zelda has always been best when you could go into potentially dangerous areas, but those areas would make navigating hell until you found that one item that makes movment easier, or enemies much easier to deal with. 2D Zelda does this a lot, and I think the Metroid series has something similar with its stackable suit upgrades.
    I've always thought that Zelda and Metroid are sibling series that can borrow a lot from each other, and even moreso now.

    This might be a hot take, but I’m like 50% sure that a lot of the hate for this game stems from the bandwagon of people who never played it and base their opinions on people like Arin Hanson’s. Though Arin is quite notorious for his hatred of 3D Zelda minus BotW and maybe Wind Waker, he’s definitely the most vocal about his hate for Skyward Sword.

      I honestly find that nitpick hilarious. I'd argue SS Link is the only Link who actually HAS lips. All the other Link's for the most part just have generic flat lines for a mouth. Weirdly, for a game that used the Cel shaded look I'd argue SS Link is the most realistically proportioned Link in the series. All the other Link's are either too anime like (TP and Botw/Totk) too cartoony (Toon Link and Link's Awakening Switch Link) or look like something ripped out of an old Disney film (Link's original design from the first game up to ALTTP).

  • @TheHyruleArchives

    My main problem with this game is the same as most modern games today: too many cutscenes, not enough gameplay. I don't think the motion controls are bad, I think the sky and side content is just fine, Skyloft is awesome and yeah it has a great dungeon lineup and generally good bosses (for a 3D Zelda anyway). I just cannot stand the main quest when I'm not in a dungeon, and the surface world is really bad. Also, the narrative is not that great (narrative and lore are different things).

    I mean, back in 2010 when it originally came out on Wii, I did _not_ enjoy it. I thought it was ugly looking and it felt so empty and limited compared to other entries in the franchise.
    Then I decided to give it another chance with the Switch rerelease.
    Upon finishing the Switch version, I found the game more tolerable. By no means a 10/10 experience, but at least a better experience than my initial experience with the game.
    It went from a 5/10 to a 7/10 for me. I think that's a pretty solid turn around.

  • @hist150project5
    @hist150project5 23 дні тому

    For me Skyward Sword is the weakest traditional 3D Zelda game, mainly due to its linearity. I think OoT/MM/WW/TP got the perfect balance with linearity vs. exploration since those games have a very interconnected world that is explorable while also having gated progression. Skyward Sword on the other hand feels like three disconnected obstacle courses. The game isn't really that explorable outside of Skyloft (which is great) and a few of the larger areas like the main areas of Faron Woods and Lanayru desert.
    Honestly I don't think the issue was really fatigue of the traditional Zelda formula. I think it's just that Skyward Sword was the weakest execution of the Zelda formula, and people took that as "The Zelda formula is bad/has gotten stale" which led them to completely throw the baby out with the bathwater with BotW. They could've improved the formula and made a much better balance between open world and exploration instead of just chucking it entirely. Despite that, I still think the game is great and at least a 9/10, and I FAR prefer it over BotW/TotK (I can't stand the new open world games).
