It is an early 1900s computing scale I picked up off Facebook Marketplace for $150 after looking around to find information about it I definitely got to be the worst possible one for appearances in the world. I had it shipped from Wellington which is 440 ks away from me and it suffered even more damage which added to the challenge I must admit I have been sitting on it for one year knowing that it was going to be a big project while filming this project I've burnt up 1.4 terabytes of hard drive space .The video I would have liked to post would have been 3 hours long so not all repairs are shown, I did stuff up a few times which have left in the video but I'm 90% happy with what I've done there's always room for improvement hope you enjoy
And looking forward to doing a smaller project next week
Cheers Richard
History:
Julius Pitrat of Gallipolis, Ohio, invented the first computing scale in 1885. It figured the price of an item by combining the weight and price per pound. Edward Canby and Orange Ozias bought the patent and founded The Computing Scale Company in 1891. The Dayton Scale Company, originally known as The Computing Scale Company, built and marketed the first computing scale in 1891. It was part of the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company formed in 1911, and became an IBM division in 1924. The Dayton Scale Division was eventually sold to the Hobart Manufacturing Company when IBM decided to stop marketing scales to retail stores.

You're one of the most underrated restorers out there, and I'm subscribed on dozens of different ones.
You skills and craftsmanship are superb, and you never BS on the condition of the original product you restore.
I'm really looking forward for your videos
Wow, thank you!
I have fallen in love with restoration channels not only because of the craftsmanship and creativity involved in restoring some of the long-lost pieces of history but also because I find it fascinating to observe the different techniques people use to achieve their end results. I look forward to watching more of your incredible work.
thanks for the encouragement
The whole topic of the "analog computers" is fascinating on its own. Give it a look.
@richardrestorations just like the8bitguy said, he said something like this " it's like finding a lost dog and making it all better & healthy again and giving it another chance of life again and a new home"
I love that about watching restorations. Richard here actually bothered to prime, fill, wet sand, and prime again before painting. That's a lot more care than some folks put into these.
thanks guys for watching please subscribe and give us a like and a comment it really helps to grow the channel Cheers Richard 👍😀
Beautiful work ❤
I love this green paint you picked. Such a beautiful restoration! Definitely subscribed after this!
Wow!!!!! The most beautiful equipment I've seen being restored so far. I don't know why, but a good job like yours, bring tears to my eyes. Maybe I'm a little crazy, but it seems to me, that the old objects have their own feelings, and I can imagine them on their good times, when they were being used, and then suddenly abandoned, forgotten in a lonely place, untill someone appears and bring them into life again. The last calibration was made 3 years before I was born. Incredible! Congratulations for your excellent job dude!
thanks for the encouragement😀
There were a couple of small grocery store / meat markets within a short distance of where I lived as a kid and both used this exact type of scale. Brings back many memories seeing this. I am really amazed and very impressed with the results you achieved with this restoration. It is stunning, to say the least.
glad it brought back some memories Cheers Richard
In the late 50s-early 60s, my mom worked at her best friend's family grocery store. The butcher counter had a scale like this--I was mesmerized by it.
Fabulous outcome! Love the colour and attention to detail! Great work!
Thanks for your feed back cheers Richard 😀
отличная работа и очень здорово что вы вернули к жизни такую симпатичную вещь.
Thanks
I was born and raised where those were made. They were a big part of that city's heritage and growth! Great restoration. It's beautiful!
Thanks Greg 😀
I was raised in Toledo Ohio and worked at Toledo Scales when I was in high school doing just about this same thing until '71 when I got drafted. We had scales come in from the 20's to the 40's for rebuilding all the time.
I love that color you did, it is so good looking. The finish build is damn good for Dayton.
Good job, well done. Thanks
@@jameslong3351 Thanks James I Appreciate your comments
I hope you weren't hurt by what hit you. Take care, mate. 😟😟
just annoyed with myself using cheap tools
Ok. Take care mate
What a beautiful restauration.
Very nice to use brazing to fill some of the pitting.
I always like how manufacturers in the past tried to make the poducts they made look beautiful. Scales, sewing machines, typewriters, cashies registers etc from 100 years ago always were beautifully decorated.🙂
Thank you very much!
Well, yeah - they were made for the rich who could affort decorations and they had servants who were paid for spend hours cleaning it.
What a beautiful old machine. Nice work!!! Thank you for sharing this, Richard.
thanks Bob for the encouragement😀
How you saved that yoke by brazing on some brass, was brilliant! I would have made a new one, but still like your approach better. Well done, mate!
Glad you liked it!
This is absolutely stunning - love the color, and thank you so much for the tip about priming before using body filler. I’ll remember that!
thanks for watching
Wow! What a beautiful scale! You did a fantastic job and I love that gorgeous green color.
thanks Philanna38
Wow, stunning result.
Glad you think so!
Muy bonita
My father worked for IBM from the late 1950s to the late 1980s. What a fascinating piece of history! Thank you for this video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Am a retired IBMer and this scale from Computing Scale Company of America (1901) one of the 4 companies that merged to form CTR (Computing Tabulating and Recording Co.) which was rebranded in 1913 to form The International Business Machine Company, is a real nice piece of history. Really enjoyed your restoration and this is a gem. Thanks!
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leave a comment. It means a lot to me!
I've watched a lot of restoration videos, this one has to be in my top ten.
thanks for the encouragement😀
I love seeing your work! It’s just beautifully done!

Absolutely beautiful! Great job!
Thanks a million! Your comment made my day!
This restoration belongs in a museum!
thanks for watching😀
I have to say this is something I have never thought about, a scale with both price per lb. and weight of item purchased. I love old scales and meat slicers - well pretty much any old item. Thanks for saving this nice scale and posting this video.
Who knew a scale could be so fascinating, right? But hey, I'm all about those hidden gems! Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!
An enormous amount of work gone into this. What a fantastic finish. The paint colour is just suberb, well done 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
What an engineering marvel of its day. Fascinating video to watch. You're doing the world a great service.
Thank you for your wonderful comment! It means a lot to me to know that my videos are appreciated. I'm glad I could share this engineering marvel with you.
Nice work Richard, love the colour it looks awesome!
thanks for the encouragement Ian 😀 Cheers Richard
I would LOVE to watch the 3-hour version of this, if you ever decide to show the whole process. This was delightful and fascinating. Beautiful work.
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leave a comment. It means a lot to me! i do have another one to do 😃
What a magnificent job you did on this machine. It’s stunning.😊👏🏽
Thank you! Cheers!
Doesn't matter if it works, it is now a show piece... Nice refurbishing project.
thanks for the encouragement
This is the best resto video I've seen on UA-cam, and there are plenty !
thanks for the encouragement
I really admire your skill and craftsmanship ! What a great job - better than new !
Thank you so much 😀
You mentioned that you had a lot of sanding to do, but as a ex paint refinisher, any one can pick up a spray gun, its the preparation before that matters, respect to you
Thanks for mentioning that lot of people don't realize the amount of work done before it's painted cheers Richard
Awesome how you restored that computing scale to working order. It looks much better too. Excellent work.
Thank you very much!
Now, THAT'S a color! 👍🏻
I think so too!
I enjoy seeing old, “useless” pieces of equipment being brought back to life like this. In a day and age where you can weigh something with your smartphone, it’s nice to see these analog machines be given a new lease on life, a testament to how things USED to be designed and made. There’s just something so satisfying about seeing physics in action what with the combination of springs, counterweights, balance levers, and gears! It feels more authentic than the “magic” we’ve become accustomed to with our smartphones. I know that the original pricing scale probably adds value but I would so love to see a gleaming white background with sharp, crisp numerals and tic marks showing through the magnifying lenses. As a graphic designer I would enjoy the challenge of building the artwork for that. Good job! The candy apple green gives it a little more character than your standard “clinical white with a gold pinstripe” which was a more common aesthetic.
Before I pulled the drum out of the machine I have contemplating about redoing the numbers but after seeing the drum I decided no I don't have that time and also felt that it needed some way of conveying History to people glad you liked it cheers Richard
Lovely color.
Thanks for your feed back cheers Richard 😀
Gorgeous. Love the color! ❤

Thanks a million! I'm stoked that you think this video is art. Keep watching for more!😃
@@richardrestorations I find the whole process of creating life that was once garbage a work of art. Washing away the dirt, dismantling, repairing broken parts, applying new paint then putting it back together. It’s all so beautiful!
I love the color, you did an awesome job!
Thank you so much!
I love restoration channels like this one

Amazing prep work for the paint job, all that sanding paid off😅
thanks for the encouragement😀
What a superb subject for restoration. You are a patient, persistent craftsman. I particularly enjoyed the use of brazing to fill the rust pits on the bar lever link.
thanks for watching
Awesome. Loving the funky green. Looks so great.
Wonder why he chose green-of all colors? Sapphire blue, turquoise, red- well I don't like green but it is beautiful.
Is that gorilla glass?
its what i like and its for me thanks for watching
Glad you like it!
Stunning work, nice job.

For what it's worth I thought the gold pin-striping looked great! It's a beautiful piece - well done!!
Thank you for taking the time to watch my video and leave a comment. It means a lot to me!
Absolutely love that color!!!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you love the color too!
This is truly terrific work - just remembering where all the parts go in what seems to be an utterly bonkers machine... Many thanks for the video, also very nicely put together. Tom (from France)
Thanks Tomas
A truly beautiful restoration! Although some might argue that it was never this nice when it was new this is how I like to see it done. With regards to paint stripprs, you´re right. 30 years go we had some really powerful stuff, but we should perhaps be glad they´re no longer sold.. What I can buy here now is hardly able to remove pizza doe from my countertop..
Thank you very much!
Es realmente increíble y genial como logra hacer renacer estas maravillas. Congratulations 🎉
gracias por los animos 😀
Hi, great job, well done. Cheers :)
Thanks for the visit
Stunning 👍👍
Thank you 😊
Man that green looks good🔥 Beautiful restoration 👍
Glad you like it
Brilliant effort and a very interesting machine! One small tip I have because I've made this mistake myself: Microfiber cloth is quite abrasive, so even if soapy water appears safe it's possible to damage something when using that type of cleaning cloth. Luckily everything worked out fine in this case!
Thanks for your feed back cheers Richard 😀
Isn't the whole point of microfiber that it's not abrasive? What do you recommend instead?
@@EpiphoneShredzzzzz for this sort of printed stuff I would start with just water and a q tip probably. There's also different types of microfiber weaves, so depending on which you have it might work fine as it did in this case.
Some skills you're showing there. I'm impressed!
I appreciate that!
Какие красивые вещи делали прежде. Вы мастер!
Спасибо
Absolutely stunning Richard you have earned my subscription stay safe.
Awesome, thank you!
Stunning restoration, I believe you were correct that gold leaf pinstriping was originally used. When it comes to the chart I think there would have been replacements available to change when prices changed.
I have seen a few of your restorations and all are well worth viewing. Keep up the great work. 👍 👍 👍 👍 👍
Thanks for the info!
Great work.
Thanks markxl
Wow. What a fantastic restoration!!!!

That was an absolutely amazing job you did 👍 I spotted one of these exactly the same just yesterday but it was in near perfect condition, so left it. So much more fun watching you restore this one.
