  • A new car to the garage, this Alloytec V6 powered VE Commodore.
    We start what will be a short series of videos on this car by trying to address the overheating and coolant temperature sensor fault issue that was initially though to be a bad thermostat and show a trick to bleed the system on these cars. This issue had put the car into a Engine Safety Mode and resulted in P0117 and P1258 codes on the scan tool.
    More to come on this VE and next video we will look at fixing a misfire and Check Engine message issue before moving onto the Stability Control, Airbag and ABS issues - cause safety third right?
    Hope this helps, thanks for watching and please consider subscribing for more if you enjoyed.

    Thank you for your video. I had been experiencing the same issues. This video certainly put me on the right to track to resolving my problem. I used a premixed coolant specific to the engine in my case and also turned the heater in the cabin to max. It took about 20 minutes for all the air bubbles to escape as I tapped the accelerator pedal several times during the process.

    Hi Nice video, and the next one with the coil pack and plugs
    Just a note for anyone loosing water, have a look next to the brake booster, you will see a set of braided hoses, they do leak over time and you need to replace them, some time in traffic you may see a small white cloud appear in that area between the end of the bonnet and the windscreen, if you have your window open you ca also smell the collant
    Check the car while running and put a flashlight on those hoses, usually they leak and drip on to the exhaust - thus the small mist cloud.
    If you are loosing water and this is not the problem, trace those hoses fro the firewall to the drivers side inner fender, there is a T junction there - they can also leak :(
    Other side you need to crawl under the car with a flashlight and have a look at the thermostat at the back of the engine - totally horrible place to put it GMH !!
    Not sure if this is any good, run it past your mechanic, people who have had thermostat fail take it out, but use a aftermarket setup that is located on by cutting the lower radiator hose and installing it there in a new housing - like most toyota's
    Regards
    George

    Hi, Also had overheating in our VS holden , changed temp sensors, had it flushed etc, nothing solved it, so went to Jaycar, bought a temp control kit, installed it, set it up to match the Aircon (when aircon running and fan started, never overheated) Problem solved. These days though you can get a premade off ebay with a temperature readout. Did not know about the air in system, but I presume the professionals I took it to would have as they were radiator specialists. Anyway have not had a problem since installed 15 years ago. Great video you made.

I checked the left back wheel two wires came off in my hand so I replaced the harness aud$67 then ABS & stability control errors were gone .the mass air flow error was just plan the corrosion off the plug and that was gone then engine light was out now there are no errors and the vehicle runs very nice .

    You have a great demeanour dude. Very relaxing to watch. Burke's backyard vibes lol..
    Coolant flush changes are a nightmare. They aren't always done right. mind you the facts out their are always mixed. And sometimes the correct process seems a bit illogical.
    But essentially the air burp is crucial. Car cooling system has a few cycles/stages it runs through.
    But it's about an hour process itself sometimes.
    Can I ask you. At what level does your coolant resovoir mark sit at when checked at cold. First thing in the morning?
    Thanks for the video.

    Impressive video! Quietly spoken amd well produced, and man, do I know about this issue. I had to limp my 2008 HFV6 out of Perth city a few weeks ago: the cooling system chucked an absolute spaz. I had to stop three times to top up with bloody tap water just to make it to the city limits. I crossed my fingers and headed out on the highway, hoping that an extended highway run would help to "burp" the air out of the system; it did. It has run fine ever since, but is still filled with tap water. When money affords, I'll get the system evacuated under vacuum and refill with a glycol / water coolant. The VE HFV6 is a great engine, but it has its issues, this has been one of them.

    • @BrowneysGarage

      @Beau Gunn Thanks mate! Glad I'm not the only one, wish I had of tried it first before ordering parts but I'll have this car for some time hopefully so sure they'll get used. You did get somewhat lucky that it sorted itself, the previous owner did a little driving with the issue (not a great deal mind you) and it refused to bleed the air out. Besides that I agree, I've been pretty happy with the car overall.

      @@BrowneysGarage ....... Cheers Browney, and you are most welcome. I have decades of amateur engine building under my belt, and a fairly high level of general mechanical aptitude, but as I age, I am getting slack, and simply prefer to turn the *bloody* key, and drive the *bloody* car . Herein lies the root of the problem ( I think ). I had totally neglected the fact that the auxiliary fans were running when the temperature gauge was reading normal. Stupidly, I trusted the gauge, and did not so much as check the coolant level! When this system "chucked a spaz", the gauge went from normal to overheat in a few seconds, so, in my opinion, the temperature gauge does not necessarily give an accurate indication of the actual temperature within the system when their is air entrapment present at all. When air gets trapped in these cars cooling systems, bad things happen, so "burping" it ( as you have shown ) on a regular basis should become as routine as checking tyre pressure. Call it an engineering issue if one may, but we bought it, and we choose to live with it. I remain more than happy with the vehicle. Given the engines displacement, and it's power output, I would say that it is a fairly high performance engine, and high performance requires high maintenance. Neglect that at your peril folks.

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  3 роки тому

      I'm far from an expert here but it could be a sign of air getting into the system somewhere as you say. Could also just be a small bit of stubborn air that won't completely bleed out and will sort itself eventually with normal driving, or may even be something minor like an imperfect seal around the funnel/coke bottle?
      May just be one of those ones that you have to drive it and see if any further issues arise? Good luck mate 👍

    Awesome video mate! Very clear, lots of information. What does it mean if the fan is blowing hot air? Brother heard a gurgling sound coming from the car when turned off, sure enough it was low on coolant, and nothing on the dip stick. Spend ages topping it up but still couldn’t get a reading on the dipstick. Car doesn’t over heat though. Gonna try your coolant trick with the coke bottle thanks. Any extra info would be mint. Your comment about blowing hot air really stuck because he’s been having that issue amongst this. There was also coolant pissed around his radiator cap.
    New cap? And just air in the system?

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  4 роки тому +2

      @Tyler Clement Depends what car it is, if it’s a VE the fill cap shouldn’t matter, cap where I bleed it from would be unlikely to fail I’d think but possible.
      The heater not blowing hot air is to test if coolant is getting to the heater core, no hot air could mean a few things like the coolant isn’t getting that far (thermostat not opening due to air pocket possibly) or it’s not being directed that way when turned on (bad heater tap in earlier car or some other signal issue possibly, less likely).
      Good luck mate

      @@BrowneysGarage I normally detest spoilers but in this case along with the mags, helps to set it apart from the fleet special look.
      The four speed gets criticised a lot being crude but it's a tough unit and works perfectly well. I had the same box in my 1995 Toyota Lexcen and it shifted nice and smooth throughout. I'm, frankly, frightened of the ZF six speed in the Falcon. It was made for expensive cars, not more bread and butter vehicles large vehicles.

      Agree with all the above, and for a daily the 4 speeds are great and need so little attention.
      They are incredibly sluggish, seem to be comparably poor for fuel economy and 'dumb' compared to the ZF though - expensive as they are when it goes wrong I'd gladly risk it in more of a weekender car if the price was right.

    Nicee... i have 2006, commodore vz alloy tec v6. It does drinks lots of water in a week or so. I’m not sure where the problem is.

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  4 роки тому +1

      @MUHAM If it’s going through coolant then it’s best to get on it ASAP, it certainly won’t get any better. It has to be going somewhere so look for traces of coolant and check your oil for any coolant or milkiness. May also be a head gasket which wouldn’t show up there if it is leaking into a cylinder and being burnt/send out the exhaust.
      Good luck mate 👍

    • @Mechrank
      @Mechrank 4 роки тому

      Browney's Garage thank you brother, i noticed my car’s previous owner bypassed its heater core, could be the leakage from there? Actually my car drinks up coolant/water from years, so if it was gasket, i could still run it from years without the issue worsening over the time?

    • @Mechrank
      @Mechrank 4 роки тому

      Browney's Garage what do you mean send out to exhaust? The water/coolant ? Is there any way i could verify head gasket being blown up? Without opening the head? I truly don’t want to open the engine without being sure about it. And no traces are found in the engine oil (milkiness).

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  4 роки тому +1

      Was it bypassed when you got it and you have not plumbed it back it? Would likely notice coolant leaking or leaking into the cabin and carpet if it was that.
      If it’s coolant leak it’ll eventually get worse, how long it takes depends on too many factors.
      Can get a better if it’s a head gasket idea before doing anything major by checking a few things, white smoke out of the exhaust (after running for a while to clear any normal moisture that may build up in exhaust when sitting), bubbles in the coolant overflow, few other tests that you’re best googling.
      Do your best to check for leaks before jumping to that though.

    How do you know when all the air is out? What do you do with the excess coolant.

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  4 роки тому

      Hard to know when 100% is out but you'll see air bubbles coming up while there's air in there (easiest to see at idle). Once the bubbles stop you can be pretty certain that you've removed the air. If you have to keep topping it up with water/coolant then there will still be air bleeding out - or coolant leaking somewhere!
      With the coke bottle you'll need a large syringe or similar to remove the excess or just remove the bottle and wash off where the excess spills.
      Cheers for watching 👍

    • @BrowneysGarage
      @BrowneysGarage  3 роки тому

      Adding water won't necessarily put air in the system, but if it was low then of course this can leave air in the system if not bled. If you're using just water instead of coolant mix this could also cause issues/air because it boils at a lower temp.
      I'd add some coolant, give it a bleed as shown and see how it goes from there, being sure to watch for leaks that may have caused that initial low level. (But I'm also just some hack on the internet who could be wrong so bear that in mind)
      Good luck mate👍

      Browney's Garage legend thanks I found it and replaced it, I have also replaced thermostat (what a mission!), water pump and radiator manifold seals as it was over heating. But it is stuck in safety mode and the contact dealer message comes up. I borrowed a code reader and the codes P0117, P00C9 & P0091 show up. When I erase them the analog temp gauge shoots straight up in the red to hot then the engine reverts to safety mode? But the digital coolant temp in engineering mode reads -40deg. When I turn off the car the electric fans continue to run for a few mins. Even though the engine is cold. And lastly it shows a stability control fault on the dash as well. The car has done nearly 325 thousand kms!
      Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks for your vids they are great!

    Tip 1. Engine Radiator caps play up on these often.. and water will not recover over time from ones Reservoir..
    Tip 2. Dont just replace the Cap, Clean the surfaces inside the housing where the 2 O'rings mate, they can pit or corrode with time.
    Tip 3. Make sure the Reservoir recovery hose is not partially/totally blocked.
    If you dont do this your new Cap will just be a half arsed fix .. 😄
