as a huge fan of love live, I'm so glad someone noticed how good the CGI is. I've never liked CGI in anime but BOI if it wasn't for the hair in some scenes I really could not tell if it is 2D or 3D
also you can tell by the clothes...which is insane if you think about. The standard battle shonen (or anything really) never changes clothes lol. They wear the same clothes every episode. Or maybe like 2 different "outfits". Like chainsaw form, human form, etc. These girls actually change clothes almost every episode lol.
Yeah man. As a 3D artist myself, i can see they did really good job modelling their faces and hairstyles too as the head part is one of the most important part for many reasons. The cell shading is also insane. And I hope they continue to improve. Their CGI of the Aqours PV (I forgot the name) the one they sing on a huge boat and also the one with the arcade themed song is really really sick. They're not from the episodes though
I've been saying for years that Love Live is amongst the best CG in anime and I really hope this video takes off because it deserves so much more credit than it gets.
Even if idol anime isn't your jam, I don't think any anime fan can really deny the immensely positive downstream effect Love Live had on CGI in modern anime as we know it for its constant pushing of the envelope for just how good 3DCG can look. Great video!
Yeah a big example of that is Land the lustrous that I mentioned. But I'm sure that there's more. In a few years we'll probably see a lot better CG and ppl will look back and see where it all started

Funny how Love Live is one of the notorious offenders of bad cgi in animes and got shitted upon it but they didn’t gave up and went on a different direction but improved and master it to almost perfection.
It's like 5 years ahead of the average anime CGI lol. All these ppl complaining about chainsaw man CGI - we already got thru that phase years ago in Love Live.
As a former animator, I've always say this when it comes to CGI in anime. The problem is never CGI itself. CGI is a tool. It's how you use it that makes the results. Other than making a fully CGI anime movie that looks amazing like Lupin III that could rival or even beat Disney, the best use of CGI is when you can blend traditional 2D and CGI cleanly and Love Live is one of those examples that has surprised me over and over again. Plus, I could flex out as a Love Live fan too. Unfortunately, as much as I want to go back to animation, passion could only take me so far here.

Agreed, even the minimum used in violet evergarden is so good even in the LN PV before they had even confirmed production for the actual anime. ( the typewriter in the show is one element known to be 3D )
honestly great review. people don't seem to take love live seriously because it's a slice of life idol franchise and it's really sad, not just with things like anime production but as well as story but that's a discussion for another day. i'm glad you actually put in the work to show people that love live isn't just some idol series with nothing to it when there's so much going onto it even with production value, costs, and the sheer passion people have for the series
Outside of Japan and the original muse memes like Nico. It barely gets talked about anymore. But people seem more "open" about slice of life anime like Bocchi this season. Where back in the day you had to hide that shieet in the closet lol. So maybe love live will pop off soon.

I've been a fan of LoveLive series since like 2015. and honestly, the CGI quality of newer LL anime is just astonishing. In the most recent show Superstar Season 2, I can't even tell when the CGI scene changes to 2D scene! It's crazy to see what the Sunrise have accomplished.

"When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all". So much of the CGI hate is because only bad CGI is noticable, while the good ones aren't. I could say it's like an invisible art. Thank you for putting light on this. I've been meaning to explore idol CGI, but didn't know where to start. Now I do. On a similar topic, I think it's also fun to explore Toei's CGI, considering they're one of the industry giants comparable to Sunrise. They seem to have been developing CG throughout the Precure series. And that the CG dev they did in Precure is what eventually benefits the recent One Piece and Dragon Ball movies.

I got my sister into anime through SpyXFamily, Tokyo Ghoul, and some of the more popular single season seasonal shows and when I showed her Love Live she immediately fell in love with it. We're pretty much halfway through the entirety of the series
Wow- terrific review! The CGI has totally progressed over the decade- and frankly I had no idea how passionate even the animators of the show are. Really good research and story telling, learned a whole lot about Love Live’s creation process and franchise, while I was thinking I already knew everything there was to know! 😂 Edit: As for any viewers coming to the series, or are being introduced to the series now for the first time, I would have never guessed I’d end up loving a slice-of-life musical anime- but hey it’s literally my favorite anime to this day! Love Live is such a terrific franchise and I’m so glad I got into it when I did back in 2019. It’d be a crime and monstrosity to say even the first of Love Live, SIP, isn’t worth watching- because objectively it’s still the best in the franchise, even if yes the CGI has improved bounds over the years. The stories impress and the characters stick, it’s such an amazing series to me and thousands of others
AAAAAAAAA I'm so happy this video exists! I've been thinking a lot about Love Live's CGI so this felt like a blessing! Love the Sublimation appreciation too! They really deserve all the praise! If you were to have gone more in-depth though, while mostly a speculation of mine, Love Live's CGI got this good mostly because they stick with Sublimation all throughout the production of Sunshine and later on pretty much every LL anime production. One reason why I think SIP's CGI looked really rough is because every CGI sequences were pretty much done by different studios (and presumably some were done in-house). They weren't able to stay as consistent and improve that way.... I dunno, just a theory of mine. Anyways, I'm just really happy that someone finally talked about Love Live's CGI in video form! It's a topic that I'm 'lowkey' obsessed with and I'm just very grateful for this!
Happy to hear 👉👈 I think I did mention that fact about Sublimation, but maybe I messed it up. I might've said from Nijigaku onwards. What's actually crazy is that they helped during Love Live School Idol Project Season 2 (the second season EVER of Love Live), for an episode. I noticed this while editing so I only put it some text during the video. If I realized earlier, I should've found the dance scene and compared it (Ep 3). I think the in-house at Sunrise played a big part, because a lot of the staff were so familiar with CGI already, including the director himself. So that way, they know how to work with Sublimation better for the 3d parts. Yeah this topic has been on my mind lately - after Nijigaku S2 and Superstar S2 back to back, then all this talk from the general anime community about CGI...I started to realize, some of the best CGI has been in the making for almost a decade now! Some of these dances are like the idol equivalent of ODM gear scenes in attack on titan lol.
@@BoobaMilkTea Oh, I am well aware of that trivia about Sublimation doing CG work for SIP, the Yume no Tobira performance in particular. I was initially gonna mention it but I felt that it's unnecessary since you already mentioned it in the video lol. Undoubtedly Sunrise's in-house staff definitely still played a huge part. There's something interesting I'd like to point out though, Sublimation seems to be involved more in the anime side of things. When it comes to MVs that aren't closely tied to the anime like KOKORO Magic 'A to Z', smile smile ship Start! and most notably **KU-RU-KU-RU Cruller!**, Sublimation is oddly absent. It's safe to assume that Sunrise's in-house staff is responsible for these MVs' CGI (can confirm after sifting through the credits) and they can still put out CGI with incredible quality.
I feel the exact same way! ever since I got into love live with superstar I've been constantly thinking about the cgi and wondering if there's a yt video on it. I'd thought about doing one myself but I'm beyond happy to have found this one (def did a better job than I could've)

Between Sunshine season 2 and Superstar s1 there was a huge improvement in the CGI, but that was only the start, I could not believe when Nijigasaki Season 2 was able to almost perfectly blend the CG with animation
Im also impressed how Kyoto Animation use pure 2d animation to animate Haruhi,Kyoukai no kanata,Lucky star and other kyoani anime project with dancing scene.
I was actually gonna talk about that at the end but I cut it, which is why the video ends in such a bad part lol. I think maybe idol anime has good CGI because there's a subculture with making them look good for decades with MMD and stuff.

I've watched idolmaster a while ago, but it's too uhh "serious" for me. That one you gotta be a real idol fan for. Love Live can be enjoyed by average Slice of Life enjoyers.
Although not anime, don't forget fighting game studio Arcsys had a presentation years ago on how they achieved the 2D cell animation aesthetic for their fighting games by warping the models to look more reminiscent to traditional animation. This is another avenue for research where the staff of Sublimation could have either worked for or inspiration from.
Love Live is interesting because it's rare seen anime like this keep getting anime by the same studio. I never thought they can do this many anime for slice of life anime with music. I love that they use the same animation style and improve them. Nijiyon is going to be CGI and I don't mind because I know it's going to look great. Cgi in love live 2013 not look great but it still better compared to CGI from other new anime. Artiswitch have great CGI and also made Sunrise. It's interesting because Sunrise keep try to do new music anime. Their new work is Hi-Driver. People always talk about Mappa and Ufotable but I don't those studios can do 2D mecha like Sunrise. I mean, Chainsaw man have better animation than Gundam Witch but I more impressed detail 2D mecha in Gundam Witch. I can see the animators take a lot of time with animated that 2d mecha.
Everything about Gundam witch is insane. Sunrise is honestly one of the GOATs for a reason. These guys know how to do 2d mechs, they can do anything lol
It's funny because a lot of people mad about anime adaptation(MHA and CSM). Meanwhile, Love Live fans and Gundam fans don't know to expect because it's original anime. Can't complain if souce materials is never exist. Never worry about spoiler from those shows

I’ve been a fan of LoveLive since Sunshine but recently haven’t been really looking into LL content or been recommended any in my feed, BUT seeing this video pop up in my feed really put a smile on my face. LoveLive is such an important series to me and outsiders only really view it as girls dancing in dresses… they’re more then that, really. The CGI for the anime is beautiful and I think NijiGaku and Liella really enforce that, but GOD SUNSHINE SEASON 2 HAD BEAUTIFUL CGI WATER BLUE NEW WORLD WAS SPECTACULAR!! So glad it was shown in the video aha

It's funny to watch how dismissive people can get about idol anime despite it being such a huge business. I'm not very fond of watching those shows, but I can see the appeal. So many idol shows have such good dance scenes, and I remember back when Love Live first started and Snow Halation was everywhere for a bit. I will admit to being one of those people that didn't know that they were using CGI in the more recent videos. It is so clean it's unnoticable to an untrained eye
The thing is... people seem to have the wrong impression on Love Live. It's not really like an Idol show like "Idolmaster". It's more close to a slice of life with a focus on music, like Bocchi the Rock this season. I know I showed a lot of serious dancing clips, but those only happen for a minute or two. 90% of the episodes is them doing funny stuff lol. Back then it was also more popular because of memes, Nico Nico niii, snow halation, Kotori photobomb face, etc... So people knew it was a goofy show then. But now, Love Live has fallen off the map for the general anime fanbase.
Idol anime gets a bad rep for their awful core fandom and "Waifu/husbando" culture bringing out toxic and creepy behaviour in those people. In order to enjoy it, you have to be relatively unmoved by those people and their behaviour
Finally! It's been really unfortunate seeing so many different Anime get insanely popular out of the blue whereas Love Live with its consistently beautiful animation and CGI never gets noticed, and if it does it get shrugged off as "Just Idol Anime bruh". The Animation **is** solid.. It's one of the very best out there right now, and the CGI work is so fantastic that you won't notice most of the time when the animation switches from 2D to 3D. The best example of this in my opinion is KURU KURU CRULLER. Top notch animation with a lot of beautiful, eye-candy effects. It's such a pleasure seeing how far Love Live has gotten with its Animation and songs, it brings a tear to my eyes... And I hope this video gets popular enough so more people realize what they've been sleeping on.
Glad to see someone singing the praises on Love Live's CGI particularly in Nijigasaki (which I feel is largely underappreciated). The music videos throughout that show are always so clean to watch.
i took around a 3-4 year break from idol hell (primarily im@s and love live) but the main thing that dragged me back was the nonfiction mv from superstar and the niji s1 opening where the cgi was notably really good (as well as the production of the songs being so refreshing from what i typically thought love live sounded like). even if this video doesn't hit the algorithm bug, i'm glad i have a video to reference when trying to sell idols to my friends, good work 👍
It's the progression of 3d animation through the various Love Live productions that's really striking. Love Live started as a multimedia deal with a lot of audience input after Sunrise had some success with that model with Strawberry Panic (a weird little yuri series), and even before the first School Idol Project anime, they released a few music videos with 3d dancing - and they started _atrocious_ . There's scenes where the girls look like stick figures, and their heads are cylinders with anime girl faces pasted on. The 3d animation in the School Idol Festival All Stars cell phone game is miles better than what they started with. They really did commit to it, though, and every anime season and music video since has shown amazing improvements, as both the animators got better and the tools advanced. I mean, one of the biggest reasons _Eutopia_ looks so good is that they have really good cloth and hair simulation, and you see that in all the Nijigasaki and Superstar work. As far as time/money savings, I think they end up plowing that back into the product. I mean, I don't think you could physically do the 1-2 music videos per episode that Love Live series pull off without that CG time savings.

Land of the Lustrous was definitely ahead of its time, and because of that I think it was popular for the wrong reasons. It was super popular for its groundbreaking animtion ("good cgi"), which for whatever reason outshined its story and potential. Luckily the manga community for it is HUGE so there is still hope, but idk bro. Furry shit just sells better ☠️

*spits tea* GOD DAMN, Japanese passion on idols is just insane.. Is it heresy to say that the love live you've shown us is better than fate fight scenes? I did not think an Idol anime could have such amazing animation, 3D-2D transitions on top of choreography.. This is insane for even me as an artist. Dancing and Fighting really share the same stuff.. but this amount of improvement is hands down.. the best.
Imo what Fate does best is using the 3d background and camera movements along with special effects, the characters are not really the focus. The CGI is rotoscoped over as well I believe. But here the character models are front and center and you see them moving their body with movements like their hips and complex finger movements as well. All idol anime have top CGI imo, but Love Lives has a very "2D" look still due to how they hand paint the faces almost frame by frame (which I forgot to mention)
Also keep in mind there are multiple girls with hairstyles that bounce around and they change into multiple clothes. So I'd say...yeah you could say Love Live's is very impressive in some ways. But Fate is very good at what they do.
Never really thought of love live as proper "anime" been a fan for ages, now I've actually realised, it definitely is top tier CGI, good video, I always love LL getting attention

Bro I damn near cried seeing μ's come back and the PV had such amazing CGI models for all the characters I think I prefer the CGI in almost every way compared to the 2D work (not that it’s bad at all) and I hope we see a full transition

The CGI in Love Live reminds me of the CG mvs in Idolmaster Side M Growing Stars. The CG is good in other idolmaster games, but Side M's is clearly a pre-animated music video, so you can't change the outfits, but that's okay because it looks so good. The way the boys move there reminds me of how the girls move in LL!, so it must be the same software. Readyyyyy!! also had really good CG mvs even though it came out before the Nijigasaki anime, so it was before it's time. Too bad the game got shut down, but we still have some of the best CG mvs I've ever seen to show for it.
I didn't mention this but idolmaster and Sunrise are both under bandai namco. (At least from what I remember) they have the whole idol CG market cornered 😂
idolish7 is another idol anime and their mvs and usage of cg in the show is stunning. the wonder light mv that got released recently is so smooth and pleasing to watch, as well as their black or white showdown mvs. i never thought i would be a fan of cgi in anime bc when uta no prince sama made the switch from 2d, i was so disappointed in the quality. but it’s improved soooo much over the years. great video!

@@CptSourcebird I like them! But I like SOL anime lol nijigasaki is not like the usual Love Live, it's more slice of life - and they don't even compete. Superstar S1 is my favorite probably - it only has 5 main characters, so the story has more time for them

Fun fact: Sunrise was one of the first studio introduced CGI to anime way back to 1988, when the classic movie Gundam Char's counterattack release. And robot shows since has somewhat the best CGI and Hand drawing technologies until this day, as both fan of gundam and lovlive, I'd say gundam's CGI is still much better, although I'm not a big fun of The origin series.
Everyone seems to forget about Sunrise when it comes to anime studios. Original stories and top animation. I showed some Gundam Hathaway CGI rundown here, and it's surprising how all the backgrounds are basically CGI
There's a lot more to vtubing than motion capture software. Model design, rigging, persona, and activity, and it wasn't until all of them came together that vtubing exploded.

As a "hardcore love live fan" that's been a fan from 2015 I would say that personally I think that going forward from "My Mai Tonight" every instance of CGI looked GOOD like the transitions between 2d and 3f often are hard to tell and currently love live's CGI is at some insane levels
I didn't care much about idol animes and never watched any, until one day, one of my friends nagged me like hell and more to watch zombieland saga, so I decided to give it a try, first I got interested in the story, then the songs and music got me invested and finally the CGI caught me like a bear trap would catch a rabbit, for whatever reason I started watching Idol animes just for the CGI, until I finally found myself with a lot of idol songs saved from different animes, games and vtubers, from covers to original songs
oh man. as someone who's been into love live since 7th grade (2013 for me), and im now 21. i've cosplayed love live since i was 16-17. the section about the fans is so true. any con i've gone to ive never NOT seen a single love live cosplayer walking around. usually they have some of the biggest fanciest cosplays (i am also guilty of this). its crazy to watch the comparison between bokura no live kimi to life and the recent niji and liella stuff. its so great to see the CGI get the applause it deserves. the switch from 3d to 2d used to be so noticeable, but now you don't realize it unless youre REALLY looking. love live's animation has always been interesting to me, and normally i dont pay attention to that type of stuff in an anime. the dances capture my attention like no other series really can. if you also want to look further, i'd recommend taking a look at ensemble stars MVs. they're all 3d animated for the game, but the models and MVs are some of the best i've seen, especially just for a rhythm game. you can switch around the characters in the positions as well, so it's not like they're just animating it for one exact character. they even have little secret easter eggs where if you watch the MV with the original character, something about the animation can change. the dedication and love put into these MVs, in my opinion, can rival love live. don't perceive the anime MVs though. they've come a long way since then LOL
Ensemble Stars... Not sure if I looked at the right one. I see videos titled Enstars, so that's probably it. I think it looks amazing but I also think games in general have better CGI because anime studios don't pay as much. I still like Love Live more tho 😂

If you like Slice of Life anime, you'll love it! You can watch any season to start with - but the first ones, "school idol project" and "sunshine", have a more fleshed out story (imo). The newer ones are more Slice of Life. I'd personally start with "Love Live Superstar", then if you like it you can watch the others.
If you end up watching Love Live, check out "Love Live superstar" first (it's my favorite). But the original ones, had a better story imo. But if you watch Slice of Life anime, you'll probably like all the seasons. It's mostly them doing goofy things at school or around the city.

The types of clips I showed, happen almost every episode too btw for a solid 1 minute of practically full CGI. Love Live literally puts like most of anime CG to shame lol. If others did 1 minute of CGI, pretty sure they would freak out - just look how much a couple frames of Chainsaw Man CGI did lol.

OH MY GODD THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING A DETAILED VIDEO ABOUT THIS, when i see someone talking about cgi animation in animes they most likely mention popular animes like: Attack on titan, chainsaw man, demon slayer, and many more popular animes and i remember ppl sayiny like omg where was this years ago or wow glad they have a new production. sorry- dont get me wrong, its just that CGI animation ISNT NEW, a lot of animes has used it since the 2000s-10s. i remember pripara and aikatsu, pretty cure and many more idol animes has used cgi and aikatsu as i recall had a pretty wacky animation but within 2 years their animation WENT UP the visual is just *chef kiss.* bushiroad also uses cgi for most of their animes besides d4dj & bandori, theres argonavis, d-cide traumerei and dcide was just great. what im trying to say cgi is actually/have been REALLY common in the anime industry, but now a lot of companies have started to use them, its not just mappa that can do it. you dont need to watch an cgi from mappa, theres other animes that does even if idol genre is cringe or boring or isnt worth the plot, watch the perfomances! its really satisfying.

In case of Houseki no kuni(Land of the Lustrous), if they used 2d throughout the entire anime, then it would have been an absolute nightmare for the animators. Like even if it's full cgi, the studio still pays attention to great amount of details like the light passing through the semi transparent hair of the gems or the extremely detailed shots of the pieces of the gems whenever they're shattered. The 2d pv of Land of the Lustrous which is on UA-cam should give an idea of how difficult to it would have been to animate in both 2d and 3d, also another good cgi anime is Dorohedoro
They used 2d tho, but they used it so carefully that it's barely noticeable, like Dia adjusting her sock, Pho's first shattering, the landscapes, the Lunarians when they're afar. They used 3d with little touches of 2d and man they sure did a good job.
Ok but knowing that the animator of Love Live did Candy Pop animation is still feels unreal to me, especially as a Love Liver who enjoys Twice songs a lot. The animators deserves more recognition really...
Will add the additional stuff maybe it relates the former Kyo-Ani's animator like Nakayama Naoya, Saito Atsushi (character design from Superstar) was on animator on KyoAni before got being a freelance same as Tsuji and I do believe that Sunrise and KyoAni had a strong partnership with them since the vice-president of KyoAni was also a former Mushi Pro animator and some of Sunrise staff are came from Mushi Pro before Also Sublimation is really a compasionate CGI team and didn't know that the whole Sublimation team are all Love Live! fan. This video need some more recognition
The designs for Superstar out too good. Kanon looks so different despite being the typical orange hair protagonist lol. Yeah Sublimation has a bunch of Love Live fans, but probably the not the entire studio lol. Most likely a lot of the staff that works on Love Live are big fans though. Tbh if you were animating these girls year after year... how could you not become a fan 😂

If you want a CGI show you've never heard of, watch Etotama. The show itself is silly as hell, but the full CGI fight scenes are absolutely beautiful and the show is a fun watch.
You didn’t see the aikatsu’s cgi evolution. THAT was crazy. They jumped from straight up using the models from their game, onto some of the cutest cgi you might have seen. Like Lovelive has amazing choreography and stuff but … the pripara and aikatsu has some of the craziest costumes with all details to animate. It’s not amazing generally as anime or anything, it is content for kids pretty much BUT THE WORK PUT FOR IT IN DETAILS HOLY COW
The reason precure and aikatsu have detailed costume are because when they do dancing scene they do full of 3d cgi & it's easier since you just do only once modeling for entire dancing & singing part But love live still use 2d too,can u imagine making dancing animation with full of detailed costume frame by frame...

I'm so glad people are starting to recognize love live more. I know its pretty big but most people ive met who are into anime or animation at all say they dont think they'd like it or avoid it. Its one of my first and most favorite animes so it makes me really happy. The first anime con I went to as well was promoting a love live game.

i think around LL sunshine s2 is when the cgi for LL started looking really good. songs like my mai tonight, water blue new world and miracle wave looked really impressive imo. the use of cgi also allows for some very cool and dynamic camera angles. outside of LL im not a huge cgi fan. like, its use in chainsaw man is pretty disappointing
D4DJ, despite not having the same budget as love live, has also been doing a great job with CGI! Especially in the opening, it's hard to notice that there's even use of anything other than 2D And unlike love live, the entire anime is done in CGI. The expressions are extremely natural, it didn't really bother me when watching. That said, UA-cam recommended your video to me and your content is extremely well crafted and edited, you deserve more subs! At least one more won, congratulations on the work ✨
Hey yeah I tried to keep the video love live focused but I mentioned D4DJs studio around 11:55 they do a similar thing to love live, that's why they are both good.

Another big hidden gem for good anime CGI are kids anime that are aimed to sell toys like beyblade, zoids/zoids wild,& almost every card anime, they're quality is impeccable

And that perhaps that's why all these anime girls with music shows have good CGI, cause there's like a surrounding culture around this stuff for a long time.
as a huge fan of love live, I'm so glad someone noticed how good the CGI is. I've never liked CGI in anime but BOI if it wasn't for the hair in some scenes I really could not tell if it is 2D or 3D
also you can tell by the clothes...which is insane if you think about. The standard battle shonen (or anything really) never changes clothes lol. They wear the same clothes every episode. Yeah man. As a 3D artist myself, i can see they did really good job modelling their faces and hairstyles too as the head part is one of the most important part for many reasons. The cell shading is also insane. And I hope they continue to improve. Their CGI of the Aqours PV (I forgot the name) the one they sing on a huge boat and also the one with the arcade themed song is really really sick. They're not from the episodes though

Even if idol anime isn't your jam, I don't think any anime fan can really deny the immensely positive downstream effect Love Live had on CGI in modern anime as we know it for its constant pushing of the envelope for just how good 3DCG can look. Great video!
Yeah a big example of that is Land the lustrous that I mentioned. But I'm sure that there's more. In a few years we'll probably see a lot better CG and ppl will look back and see where it all started

When you think about it, idol anime really is a good place to hone cgi skills. Since you're going to have frequent dance sequences.
Funny how Love Live is one of the notorious offenders of bad cgi in animes and got shitted upon it but they didn’t gave up and went on a different direction but improved and master it to almost perfection.

I've put off Love Live for far too long, but I'm currently in the gaming phase. I promise I'll get into it when I shift back to the anime phase.
As a former animator, I've always say this when it comes to CGI in anime. The problem is never CGI itself. CGI is a tool. It's how you use it that makes the results.
Other than making a fully CGI anime movie that looks amazing like Lupin III that could rival or even beat Disney, the best use of CGI is when you can blend traditional 2D and CGI cleanly and Love Live is one of those examples that has surprised me over and over again. Plus, I could flex out as a Love Live fan too. Unfortunately, as much as I want to go back to animation, passion could only take me so far here.

honestly great review. people don't seem to take love live seriously because it's a slice of life idol franchise and it's really sad, not just with things like anime production but as well as story but that's a discussion for another day. i'm glad you actually put in the work to show people that love live isn't just some idol series with nothing to it when there's so much going onto it even with production value, costs, and the sheer passion people have for the series
Outside of Japan and the original muse memes like Nico. It barely gets talked about anymore. But people seem more "open" about slice of life anime like Bocchi this season. Where back in the day you had to hide that shieet in the closet lol. So maybe love live will pop off soon.

I've been a fan of LoveLive series since like 2015. and honestly, the CGI quality of newer LL anime is just astonishing. In the most recent show Superstar Season 2, I can't even tell when the CGI scene changes to 2D scene! It's crazy to see what the Sunrise have accomplished.

On a similar topic, I think it's also fun to explore Toei's CGI, considering they're one of the industry giants comparable to Sunrise. They seem to have been developing CG throughout the Precure series. And that the CG dev they did in Precure is what eventually benefits the recent One Piece and Dragon Ball movies.

I got my sister into anime through SpyXFamily, Tokyo Ghoul, and some of the more popular single season seasonal shows and when I showed her Love Live she immediately fell in love with it. We're pretty much halfway through the entirety of the series

Wow- terrific review! The CGI has totally progressed over the decade- and frankly I had no idea how passionate even the animators of the show are. Really good research and story telling, learned a whole lot about Love Live’s creation process and franchise, while I was thinking I already knew everything there was to know! 😂
Edit: As for any viewers coming to the series, or are being introduced to the series now for the first time, I would have never guessed I’d end up loving a slice-of-life musical anime- but hey it’s literally my favorite anime to this day! Love Live is such a terrific franchise and I’m so glad I got into it when I did back in 2019. It’d be a crime and monstrosity to say even the first of Love Live, SIP, isn’t worth watching- because objectively it’s still the best in the franchise, even if yes the CGI has improved bounds over the years. The stories impress and the characters stick, it’s such an amazing series to me and thousands of others

AAAAAAAAA I'm so happy this video exists! I've been thinking a lot about Love Live's CGI so this felt like a blessing! Love the Sublimation appreciation too! They really deserve all the praise!
If you were to have gone more in-depth though, while mostly a speculation of mine, Love Live's CGI got this good mostly because they stick with Sublimation all throughout the production of Sunshine and later on pretty much every LL anime production. One reason why I think SIP's CGI looked really rough is because every CGI sequences were pretty much done by different studios (and presumably some were done in-house). They weren't able to stay as consistent and improve that way.... I dunno, just a theory of mine.
Anyways, I'm just really happy that someone finally talked about Love Live's CGI in video form! It's a topic that I'm 'lowkey' obsessed with and I'm just very grateful for this!

I think I did mention that fact about Sublimation, but maybe I messed it up. I might've said from Nijigaku onwards. What's actually crazy is that they helped during Love Live School Idol Project Season 2 (the second season EVER of Love Live), for an episode. I noticed this while editing so I only put it some text during the video. If I realized earlier, I should've found the dance scene and compared it (Ep 3).
I think the in-house at Sunrise played a big part, because a lot of the staff were so familiar with CGI already, including the director himself. So that way, they know how to work with Sublimation better for the 3d parts.
Yeah this topic has been on my mind lately - after Nijigaku S2 and Superstar S2 back to back, then all this talk from the general anime community about CGI...I started to realize, some of the best CGI has been in the making for almost a decade now! Some of these dances are like the idol equivalent of ODM gear scenes in attack on titan lol.
@@BoobaMilkTea Oh, I am well aware of that trivia about Sublimation doing CG work for SIP, the Yume no Tobira performance in particular. I was initially gonna mention it but I felt that it's unnecessary since you already mentioned it in the video lol.
Undoubtedly Sunrise's in-house staff definitely still played a huge part. There's something interesting I'd like to point out though, Sublimation seems to be involved more in the anime side of things.
When it comes to MVs that aren't closely tied to the anime like KOKORO Magic 'A to Z', smile smile ship Start! and most notably **KU-RU-KU-RU Cruller!**, Sublimation is oddly absent. It's safe to assume that Sunrise's in-house staff is responsible for these MVs' CGI (can confirm after sifting through the credits) and they can still put out CGI with incredible quality.

Although not anime, don't forget fighting game studio Arcsys had a presentation years ago on how they achieved the 2D cell animation aesthetic for their fighting games by warping the models to look more reminiscent to traditional animation. This is another avenue for research where the staff of Sublimation could have either worked for or inspiration from.
D4DJ also has really good cgi, I can’t recommend it enough honestly,, it’s so expressive and pleasing to look at

Love Live is interesting because it's rare seen anime like this keep getting anime by the same studio. I never thought they can do this many anime for slice of life anime with music. I love that they use the same animation style and improve them. Nijiyon is going to be CGI and I don't mind because I know it's going to look great. Cgi in love live 2013 not look great but it still better compared to CGI from other new anime. Artiswitch have great CGI and also made Sunrise. It's interesting because Sunrise keep try to do new music anime. Their new work is Hi-Driver.
People always talk about Mappa and Ufotable but I don't those studios can do 2D mecha like Sunrise. I mean, Chainsaw man have better animation than Gundam Witch but I more impressed detail 2D mecha in Gundam Witch. I can see the animators take a lot of time with animated that 2d mecha.
Everything about Gundam witch is insane. Sunrise is honestly one of the GOATs for a reason. These guys know how to do 2d mechs, they can do anything lol
It's funny because a lot of people mad about anime adaptation(MHA and CSM). Meanwhile, Love Live fans and Gundam fans don't know to expect because it's original anime. Can't complain if souce materials is never exist. Never worry about spoiler from those shows

I’ve been a fan of LoveLive since Sunshine but recently haven’t been really looking into LL content or been recommended any in my feed, BUT seeing this video pop up in my feed really put a smile on my face. LoveLive is such an important series to me and outsiders only really view it as girls dancing in dresses… they’re more then that, really. The CGI for the anime is beautiful and I think NijiGaku and Liella really enforce that, but GOD SUNSHINE SEASON 2 HAD BEAUTIFUL CGI WATER BLUE NEW WORLD WAS SPECTACULAR!! So glad it was shown in the video aha

It's funny to watch how dismissive people can get about idol anime despite it being such a huge business. I'm not very fond of watching those shows, but I can see the appeal. So many idol shows have such good dance scenes, and I remember back when Love Live first started and Snow Halation was everywhere for a bit. I will admit to being one of those people that didn't know that they were using CGI in the more recent videos. It is so clean it's unnoticable to an untrained eye
The thing is... people seem to have the wrong impression on Love Live. It's not really like an Idol show like "Idolmaster". It's more close to a slice of life with a focus on music, like Bocchi the Rock this season. I know I showed a lot of serious dancing clips, but those only happen for a minute or two. 90% of the episodes is them doing funny stuff lol.
Back then it was also more popular because of memes, Nico Nico niii, snow halation, Kotori photobomb face, etc... So people knew it was a goofy show then. But now, Love Live has fallen off the map for the general anime fanbase.
Idol anime gets a bad rep for their awful core fandom and "Waifu/husbando" culture bringing out toxic and creepy behaviour in those people. In order to enjoy it, you have to be relatively unmoved by those people and their behaviour
Wait, some of the Love Life dance videos popped up on my feed a while back. I did not even know they had full body CGI. This is amazing

Finally! It's been really unfortunate seeing so many different Anime get insanely popular out of the blue whereas Love Live with its consistently beautiful animation and CGI never gets noticed, and if it does it get shrugged off as "Just Idol Anime bruh".
The Animation **is** solid.. It's one of the very best out there right now, and the CGI work is so fantastic that you won't notice most of the time when the animation switches from 2D to 3D. The best example of this in my opinion is KURU KURU CRULLER. Top notch animation with a lot of beautiful, eye-candy effects.
It's such a pleasure seeing how far Love Live has gotten with its Animation and songs, it brings a tear to my eyes... And I hope this video gets popular enough so more people realize what they've been sleeping on.
Glad to see someone singing the praises on Love Live's CGI particularly in Nijigasaki (which I feel is largely underappreciated). The music videos throughout that show are always so clean to watch.
i took around a 3-4 year break from idol hell (primarily im@s and love live) but the main thing that dragged me back was the nonfiction mv from superstar and the niji s1 opening where the cgi was notably really good (as well as the production of the songs being so refreshing from what i typically thought love live sounded like). even if this video doesn't hit the algorithm bug, i'm glad i have a video to reference when trying to sell idols to my friends, good work 👍

It's the progression of 3d animation through the various Love Live productions that's really striking. Love Live started as a multimedia deal with a lot of audience input after Sunrise had some success with that model with Strawberry Panic (a weird little yuri series), and even before the first School Idol Project anime, they released a few music videos with 3d dancing - and they started _atrocious_ . There's scenes where the girls look like stick figures, and their heads are cylinders with anime girl faces pasted on. The 3d animation in the School Idol Festival All Stars cell phone game is miles better than what they started with.
They really did commit to it, though, and every anime season and music video since has shown amazing improvements, as both the animators got better and the tools advanced. I mean, one of the biggest reasons _Eutopia_ looks so good is that they have really good cloth and hair simulation, and you see that in all the Nijigasaki and Superstar work.
As far as time/money savings, I think they end up plowing that back into the product. I mean, I don't think you could physically do the 1-2 music videos per episode that Love Live series pull off without that CG time savings.
Constantly reinvesting into milki-- I mean pleasing their core fanbase, in return generating more money. I gotta learn from them.

Land of the Lustrous was definitely ahead of its time, and because of that I think it was popular for the wrong reasons. It was super popular for its groundbreaking animtion ("good cgi"), which for whatever reason outshined its story and potential. Luckily the manga community for it is HUGE so there is still hope, but idk bro. Furry shit just sells better ☠️

As someone who was never interested in Love live and idol anime in general, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this video on my feed. :D
Haha it's legit I swear, it's a good comedy slice of life more than a music show. I'm nitpicking scenes here for the dances.
*spits tea* GOD DAMN, Japanese passion on idols is just insane.. Is it heresy to say that the love live you've shown us is better than fate fight scenes?
I did not think an Idol anime could have such amazing animation, 3D-2D transitions on top of choreography.. This is insane for even me as an artist.
Dancing and Fighting really share the same stuff.. but this amount of improvement is hands down.. the best.
Imo what Fate does best is using the 3d background and camera movements along with special effects, the characters are not really the focus. The CGI is rotoscoped over as well I believe. But here the character models are front and center and you see them moving their body with movements like their hips and complex finger movements as well. All idol anime have top CGI imo, but Love Lives has a very "2D" look still due to how they hand paint the faces almost frame by frame (which I forgot to mention)
Also keep in mind there are multiple girls with hairstyles that bounce around and they change into multiple clothes. So I'd say...yeah you could say Love Live's is very impressive in some ways. But Fate is very good at what they do.

The CGI in Love Live reminds me of the CG mvs in Idolmaster Side M Growing Stars. The CG is good in other idolmaster games, but Side M's is clearly a pre-animated music video, so you can't change the outfits, but that's okay because it looks so good. The way the boys move there reminds me of how the girls move in LL!, so it must be the same software.
Readyyyyy!! also had really good CG mvs even though it came out before the Nijigasaki anime, so it was before it's time. Too bad the game got shut down, but we still have some of the best CG mvs I've ever seen to show for it.
I didn't mention this but idolmaster and Sunrise are both under bandai namco. (At least from what I remember) they have the whole idol CG market cornered 😂

idolish7 is another idol anime and their mvs and usage of cg in the show is stunning. the wonder light mv that got released recently is so smooth and pleasing to watch, as well as their black or white showdown mvs. i never thought i would be a fan of cgi in anime bc when uta no prince sama made the switch from 2d, i was so disappointed in the quality. but it’s improved soooo much over the years. great video!

Fun fact: Sunrise was one of the first studio introduced CGI to anime way back to 1988, when the classic movie Gundam Char's counterattack release. And robot shows since has somewhat the best CGI and Hand drawing technologies until this day, as both fan of gundam and lovlive, I'd say gundam's CGI is still much better, although I'm not a big fun of The origin series.
Everyone seems to forget about Sunrise when it comes to anime studios. Original stories and top animation.
I showed some Gundam Hathaway CGI rundown here, and it's surprising how all the backgrounds are basically CGI

There's a lot more to vtubing than motion capture software. Model design, rigging, persona, and activity, and it wasn't until all of them came together that vtubing exploded.

As a "hardcore love live fan" that's been a fan from 2015 I would say that personally I think that going forward from "My Mai Tonight" every instance of CGI looked GOOD like the transitions between 2d and 3f often are hard to tell and currently love live's CGI is at some insane levels

I didn't care much about idol animes and never watched any, until one day, one of my friends nagged me like hell and more to watch zombieland saga, so I decided to give it a try, first I got interested in the story, then the songs and music got me invested and finally the CGI caught me like a bear trap would catch a rabbit, for whatever reason I started watching Idol animes just for the CGI, until I finally found myself with a lot of idol songs saved from different animes, games and vtubers, from covers to original songs
They call that sht idol hell lol
the instrumental xylophone of Neo Sky Neo Map in the background almost made me cry. Ive been watching LL since 2014 and the CG has gotten so good.

oh man. as someone who's been into love live since 7th grade (2013 for me), and im now 21. i've cosplayed love live since i was 16-17. the section about the fans is so true. any con i've gone to ive never NOT seen a single love live cosplayer walking around. usually they have some of the biggest fanciest cosplays (i am also guilty of this). its crazy to watch the comparison between bokura no live kimi to life and the recent niji and liella stuff. its so great to see the CGI get the applause it deserves. the switch from 3d to 2d used to be so noticeable, but now you don't realize it unless youre REALLY looking. love live's animation has always been interesting to me, and normally i dont pay attention to that type of stuff in an anime. the dances capture my attention like no other series really can.
if you also want to look further, i'd recommend taking a look at ensemble stars MVs. they're all 3d animated for the game, but the models and MVs are some of the best i've seen, especially just for a rhythm game. you can switch around the characters in the positions as well, so it's not like they're just animating it for one exact character. they even have little secret easter eggs where if you watch the MV with the original character, something about the animation can change. the dedication and love put into these MVs, in my opinion, can rival love live. don't perceive the anime MVs though. they've come a long way since then LOL
Ensemble Stars... Not sure if I looked at the right one. I see videos titled Enstars, so that's probably it. I think it looks amazing but I also think games in general have better CGI because anime studios don't pay as much. I still like Love Live more tho 😂
idolm@ster also has really good cgi in its game mvs, imo!! especially in cinderella girls: starlight stage. anime idol franchises are just on a completely different level LMAO

If you like Slice of Life anime, you'll love it!
You can watch any season to start with - but the first ones, "school idol project" and "sunshine", have a more fleshed out story (imo). The newer ones are more Slice of Life. I'd personally start with "Love Live Superstar", then if you like it you can watch the others.

If you end up watching Love Live, check out "Love Live superstar" first (it's my favorite). But the original ones, had a better story imo. But if you watch Slice of Life anime, you'll probably like all the seasons. It's mostly them doing goofy things at school or around the city.

The types of clips I showed, happen almost every episode too btw for a solid 1 minute of practically full CGI. Love Live literally puts like most of anime CG to shame lol. If others did 1 minute of CGI, pretty sure they would freak out - just look how much a couple frames of Chainsaw Man CGI did lol.
Every passing second of this video, I just got rubbed more in the face how big Love Live! is. And it seems like it ain't stopping anytime soon, thankfully!

OH MY GODD THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING A DETAILED VIDEO ABOUT THIS, when i see someone talking about cgi animation in animes they most likely mention popular animes like: Attack on titan, chainsaw man, demon slayer, and many more popular animes and i remember ppl sayiny like omg where was this years ago or wow glad they have a new production. sorry- dont get me wrong, its just that CGI animation ISNT NEW, a lot of animes has used it since the 2000s-10s. i remember pripara and aikatsu, pretty cure and many more idol animes has used cgi and aikatsu as i recall had a pretty wacky animation but within 2 years their animation WENT UP the visual is just *chef kiss.*
bushiroad also uses cgi for most of their animes besides d4dj & bandori, theres argonavis, d-cide traumerei and dcide was just great. what im trying to say cgi is actually/have been REALLY common in the anime industry, but now a lot of companies have started to use them, its not just mappa that can do it. you dont need to watch an cgi from mappa, theres other animes that does even if idol genre is cringe or boring or isnt worth the plot, watch the perfomances! its really satisfying.

In case of Houseki no kuni(Land of the Lustrous), if they used 2d throughout the entire anime, then it would have been an absolute nightmare for the animators. Like even if it's full cgi, the studio still pays attention to great amount of details like the light passing through the semi transparent hair of the gems or the extremely detailed shots of the pieces of the gems whenever they're shattered. The 2d pv of Land of the Lustrous which is on UA-cam should give an idea of how difficult to it would have been to animate in both 2d and 3d, also another good cgi anime is Dorohedoro
Urusei yatsura 2022 hair is like houseki no Kuni 2D detail
They used 2d tho, but they used it so carefully that it's barely noticeable, like Dia adjusting her sock, Pho's first shattering, the landscapes, the Lunarians when they're afar. They used 3d with little touches of 2d and man they sure did a good job.
Ok but knowing that the animator of Love Live did Candy Pop animation is still feels unreal to me, especially as a Love Liver who enjoys Twice songs a lot. The animators deserves more recognition really...
Will add the additional stuff maybe it relates the former Kyo-Ani's animator like Nakayama Naoya, Saito Atsushi (character design from Superstar) was on animator on KyoAni before got being a freelance same as Tsuji and I do believe that Sunrise and KyoAni had a strong partnership with them since the vice-president of KyoAni was also a former Mushi Pro animator and some of Sunrise staff are came from Mushi Pro before
Also Sublimation is really a compasionate CGI team and didn't know that the whole Sublimation team are all Love Live! fan. This video need some more recognition

Yeah Sublimation has a bunch of Love Live fans, but probably the not the entire studio lol. Most likely a lot of the staff that works on Love Live are big fans though. Tbh if you were animating these girls year after year... how could you not become a fan 😂

You didn’t see the aikatsu’s cgi evolution. THAT was crazy. They jumped from straight up using the models from their game, onto some of the cutest cgi you might have seen. Like Lovelive has amazing choreography and stuff but … the pripara and aikatsu has some of the craziest costumes with all details to animate. It’s not amazing generally as anime or anything, it is content for kids pretty much BUT THE WORK PUT FOR IT IN DETAILS HOLY COW

The reason precure and aikatsu have detailed costume are because when they do dancing scene they do full of 3d cgi & it's easier since you just do only once modeling for entire dancing & singing part

I'm so glad people are starting to recognize love live more. I know its pretty big but most people ive met who are into anime or animation at all say they dont think they'd like it or avoid it. Its one of my first and most favorite animes so it makes me really happy. The first anime con I went to as well was promoting a love live game.

i think around LL sunshine s2 is when the cgi for LL started looking really good. songs like my mai tonight, water blue new world and miracle wave looked really impressive imo. the use of cgi also allows for some very cool and dynamic camera angles. outside of LL im not a huge cgi fan. like, its use in chainsaw man is pretty disappointing

D4DJ, despite not having the same budget as love live, has also been doing a great job with CGI! Especially in the opening, it's hard to notice that there's even use of anything other than 2D
And unlike love live, the entire anime is done in CGI. The expressions are extremely natural, it didn't really bother me when watching.

Hey yeah I tried to keep the video love live focused but I mentioned D4DJs studio around 11:55 they do a similar thing to love live, that's why they are both good.
And thanks so much I hope to not disappoint you, I'm not sure what type of content you normally like but I pretty much only like shounen anime and slice of life lolol
Another big hidden gem for good anime CGI are kids anime that are aimed to sell toys like beyblade, zoids/zoids wild,& almost every card anime, they're quality is impeccable
Maybe it's because these franchises don't rely on manga sales so they have more money to invest in good CG.
@@BoobaMilkTea oh true and probably the toy manufacturers fund it too so the studios probably have more leeway than most studios but it does come at a cost of the 2d animation being a bit stiff
