I remember hearing a comment once to the effect of many men don’t think twice about buying a $500 shop tool that they’ll only use once or twice a year, but many women deny themselves purchasing a $300 mixer that they’ll use almost every day. Once I heard that, I went out and bought myself a Kitchenaid mixer. My mom saw it and wistfully commented that she’d always wanted one but never allowed herself to spend that kind of money. That saddens me because she really cooked a lot more than I do.
Anyway, $180 for a beautiful and functional set of hooks or needles or other crafts equipment-put it in perspective. If you have a partner in your life, consider how readily they would invest $180 in their interests. Concert tickets. Sports equipment. Power tools. Books. Big-ass TV. When you look at it this way, you’ll feel much happier with investing in your “crafts therapy”. Quality yarn locally hand-dyed is expensive too, but not as expensive as therapy. That’s what I tell myself!

I mean if you have the money and you want to, you can spend it on whatever you like. But I personally would never spend that much money on most of the things you'd mentioned, and I'm not close to many people who would, so to me that logic doesn't really track. Unless its a piece of technology that's integral to my life and I'll use for at least half a decade or for twenty different things. And even then, I'm only spending as much money as I have to. My thing is always, why spend more money when you can spend less? Especially if it isn't worth the more money you could potentially spend.
Also I know 'X thing is cheaper than therapy' is a common colloquial expression and isn't meant to be take entirely seriously, but I always feel the need to say that hobbies aren't actually a replacement for therapy. Crocheting is fun and can be a good coping mechanism, but it _alone_ isn't actual medical treatment/support for mental health issues or major life challenges, and spending a lot of money on it doesn't really change that 🤷 Again I know you weren't being literal but as someone with pretty severe mental health issues it always grinds my gears slightly when people equate fun hobbies to therapy, when you would never do that with other essential forms of medical treatment.

You covered the main reasons why I would never pay the high price tag: no swivel cords, 3-4 hook sizes I would never use for Tunisian, no stitch markers, and less cord options when compared to her interchangable knitting needle set. It was a great start, but for those reasons and the high price tag, it's a hard no for me, (especially when converted to CAD$!).

@@LushOLicious Sewrella’s hooks are completely compatible with Lantern Moon’s cords, connectors, and stoppers. I have both, so I can personally confirm that they are interchangeable. I prefer Lantern Moon’s cords because they SWIVEL and they have non-kinking, non-memory, steel cable running through them, for reinforcement. So I don’t even use the cords that came with the Sewrella set.
I plunked down that money for the hooks alone, because I can only use inline hooks but I can’t stand wooden hooks. Sewrella’s are the ONLY inline Tunisia hooks that are made of aluminum like Susan Bates.
PS: Lantern Moon cords are sold individually on Amazon, in several sizes.

@@LushOLicious Less cord options?? Sewrella hooks are confirmed interchangeable with FIVE different brands’ cords, stoppers, and connectors. These are the five brands…
      Knitter's Pride
      Knit Pro
      Knit Picks
      Lantern Moon
      Lykke
PS: That’s actually a lot compared to most brands of hooks and knitting needles, which use proprietary connectors that aren’t compatible with ANY other brands. Like Chiaogoo, for example. So five is a LOT of options.

As much as I love Ashleigh and the Sewrella team, I can't justify the $180 for this when I just won't use over half of the sizes. I 100% agree that they filled a hole in the tunisian crochet market, but they just didn't quite cover everything to get me to cave. I think if they offered the sizes you mentioned (a 4.5 mm and up set, even if the sizes above 8 were plastic) I'd be way more likely to buy them. It would be nice to have swivel cords as well, especially since Knitters Pride already makes them... they could have just made Pink Mindful Swivels and added them in.
If they can fill some of these gaps or offer the hooks a la carte, I'd 100% be picking these up!

I'm still in the 'kiddie pool' of Tunisian and traditional crochet, so, while I'm figuring out my preferences, I'm happy working with my cheap n cheerful tools. However, I think that a huge part of what makes (in this case) crochet enjoyable and moreish is being able to treat yourself to high-end tools and yarns. Like the tulip interchangeable hook set cost that much but you get swivel cords, hook gauge/ yarn cutter, cord extenders, needles and you get a 7mm hook in it as well. I've been knitting and crocheting for over 40 years, and I remember well the days that I could only afford the inexpensive tools. I treat myself better now, in ALL of my hobbies, because having good tools is such a game-changer. I got a Knitter's Pride interchangeable set as a gift a few years ago (cords do not swivel!), but the hook is just massive, and I tend to stretch the yarn trying to maneuver in and out. I also have a Denise set, but the short shaft puts the join right where my pinkie finger grips, which puts a constant stress on that join. I know now that I need at least a 6" length. The Sewrella set is a bit pricey for the same reasons Amanda Petersen mentioned. I'm relatively new to TC, but absolutely LOVE it, and am definitely committed. I can justify the smaller hooks for non-TC projects when I'm using light fingering or even lace yarn and, honestly, I have enough stitch markers of all styles so that doesn't bother me. The swivel cords could be a deal-breaker, though, as I don't like the idea of having to purchase cords for an already-high-end hook set. If I already had swivel cords that fit, I would get the Sewrella set. Toni, your videos are so informative and easy to follow, and you are such a joy to watch and listen to, you make me smile - thank you. I'm a new fan of yours and all things TC.

Firstly, I just want to thank you for being my light in the creative rut I swam in for 3 years after retiring from the Tattoo industry after 24 years of artistic creative freedom... Of all the different videos I gave an honest effort to learn by.. It wasn't until your videos that I was able to absorb the knowledge needed to successfully complete a simple chain. You... you amazing woman... taught ME! lol! As a thank you, I'd like to share 2 of the design concepts I came up with while fighting the "snot-monster" several weeks in December/January. I'm not anywhere near skilled enough to make something requiring such precise measurements as crochet 'n knitting hooks do. So, when I heard you mention a lack of improved upon & updated [attachment] designs being absolutely possible but only applied to one Brand's products; while the rest of the vendors, etc don't implement that design improvement at all... There's one big reason that comes to mind as to "why" that may be, and it's a Trademark on that particular design concept and implementation. It's pretty common among businesses of any size... more so in the larger fortune 500 COs and the baby-businesses that need that edge in order to grow. It's not something I can fault that particular company for... but I can offer to share my designs to the crochet/knitting community in hopes that someone far more capable than I am, can bring it to life for all of us to comfortably enjoy with lighter hits to the price tag. Not sure who to contact, or how it's preferred. I'm guessing I haven't gotten it right yet, since I haven't heard back from anyone I've tried contacting... But, that's the price we pay for wanting more privacy settings online I guess. My messages likely go straight to the "spam" or "pending messages" boxes and remain unnoticed for who-knows-how-long... 🤘🎃

I believe the main reason why I've yet to fully tried Tunisian crochet is because of the hooks. I only crochet with metal hooks, I can't stand plastic and my tension is too tight for wood. I was gifted some previously used Tunisian crochet metal hooks that're super long, but they're so long they get in the way.
I'm really excited that there's still companies out there willing to take risks. The price point is high, but it's basically the same as high end interchangeable knitting needles, for example. Also, if it gets Toni's approval, I have no doubt in my mind that it's a good product!

And as you said, one would need loose tension to get the stitches over that thumb rest. For a crocheter like me, the thumb rest on a Tunisian crochet hook is an obstacle. And then there's the price for hook sizes I won't use ... I am happy with my less expensive Tunisian hooks. Thank you for this honest video!

I learned to do the “afghan stitch” 50 years ago on 10 and 14 inch afghan hooks. Don’t remember the brand, but they were great. Somewhere in storage, I probably have these hooks from an “F” to an “I”. About the most stitches I could get on a 14” hook was 150, but you did run the chance of the stitches slipping off.
This looks like a nice set and, if I did more Tunisian crochet, I would probably get this, however, the price is a bit high for many of us. I especially love the in-line hooks. Susan Bates has been my favorite for years and these hooks remind me of the Bates. I was the one that recommended you try out the Dyak hooks😊 I own every set of Tunisian Hooks I’ve found on this planet, and even some incredible custom made hooks from Australia, so naturally I have to purchase this set 😂. My Dyak’s are still my go to hooks, both the Wooden and Black Nickel, so I’m always curious to see how the more expensive sets compare. ❤

@@abigailrandall7520 Oh my goodness I hope your puppy is okay! That’s a VERY expensive meal! I love my Black Nickel set so much that I bought a full set of the Black Nickel Knitting Needles too. I use them more than any other set of knitting needles I own too, and own a ridiculous number of interchangeable needles too🤭

Thank you for this review. I appreciate that you took the time to review these hooks. I completely agree with what you said about how your tools help you enjoy the craft or believe this isn't the craft for you. If I had the money I would totally invest in a pricier set of tools as long as they were quality.

For the price, I wished they came with the swivel cable and they require larger size. Agree with the size suggestion you mention, if Iwill pay that amount. I need hooks that I will use , but is very pretty and the case could be a bit more dirt friendly.

Wow Toni, this morning our little group had a meeting of our yarn club and were talking about Tunisian cabled hooks and how its difficult to find them in metal and we were also talking about your channel and how much we like your teaching style and personality. I would love these hooks or other metal ones, esp ones that are of the tapered variety. Keep up the great work here on UA-cam.

  • @amyfeigt6715
    @amyfeigt6715 Рік тому

I love that the hooks are one solid piece so that you don't have to worry about the tapered portion coming unglued from say a wooden hook when tightening the cable. That has been the main reason I have not invested in an interchangeable hook set yet, so for me, that's a definite plus! Thanks for a great in-depth review!

Loved your review! If I made my living doing what you do, the price point would be reasonable. For the hobbyist, like myself, this is a luxury item to put on my wish list. It would also be nice if Tunisian hook sizes could be sold separately instead of full sets like the old metal hooks used to be sold years ago. Like you said you have a set and will only use some of the hooks. It would be nice to pick what size needles you want in your set. I must say, they are beautiful !

I started back into Tunisian crochet after watching your videos, I have always liked the fabric of TSS but at the time I was playing with it you could only get straight hooks, which I use with my weaving looms as well. The first set I purchased after seeing how for patterns have come for Tunisian crochet was from Knitters Pride-Dreamz hooks, they were reasonably priced and I like knitting with Knitters Pride needles. I had to wait until after Christmas to play and when I finally could it was so much fun. I just started messing around with cotton dish cloth yarn and made a great kitchen towel. About the time I was completing the towel the dog knocked my work onto the floor and decided the hook was a chew toy, killed the hook and I was forced to find another in my hook stash that was the same size K (5.5mm not 5.0mm). An older straight aluminum hook I had was just that. Fortunately I found and ordered the Clover bamboo hooks because the price for them on Amazon dropped considerably, down to $69.00. They arrived several days after the mishap with the dog and oh wow, I like them even better. I have rarely like bamboo hooks or needles but these are very nice and now my favorites. I replaced the hook my dog killed, and now if I am not actively working on a project, I zip it into the project bag to avoid any more disasters. To buy the hooks individually is pricey compared to getting an entire set. That being said, I too would like to see sets in the same much used sizes you mentioned as well. Then the entire set of hooks would get used more. I do appreciate your reviews and your tutorials so very much. Your work is lovely.

Sewrellla made these hooks available as a pre-order with her last collection, and may do this again with the collection that drops for pre-order this Friday. The price point is high, but I ordered them anyway….and I’ll look into swivel cords. But if I don’t have to buy any more Tunisian crochet hooks again, that kind of makes up for it. Thanks for your fair and balanced review. ❤️

Welll...... About the 3.5 mm hook: I've made some summer tops for me with Cléa thread (very soft 151 TEX cotton thread) and a 3 mm Tunisian crochet hook. My KnitPro Tunisian kit didn't have the 3mm (the smaller is also 3.5mm), but I bought it separately because I KNEW I would use it... My tops have an amazing drape and are really cool in a hot summer day.

I loved seeing the comparison to the other hook brands. I already snagged a set of these, but seeing it compared to the others helps me know what direction to go to fill in the gaps left here. The size range of hooks definitely feels like it was picked by a knitter, not a crocheter, much less a Tunisian crocheter. I've gotten into knitting in the last year, and found the needle sizes there much smaller than the hook sizes I ever reach for in any kind of crochet.

Your reviews are so thorough. I really appreciate your honesty. I have just gotten into Tunisian crochet and just finished the amazing Kensington Tote from your beautiful book. Thank you! I went with Knitters Pride for the 12mm hook with the interchangeable cord. I certainly can't afford the Sewrella hooks, but they are absolutely beautiful. I don't like working with wood because I prefer a heavier tool in my hand and coming from traditional crochet I do find myself having to reorient my hook without the thumb rest all the time. I didn't even know swivel cords were a possibility, but they sound amazing and I definitely want to invest in some. I found my cord twisting awkwardly several times during my project. Thanks again for the awesome review!

I got the clover set. I haven’t tried them out yet. They are the opposite of what I use. I use tapered, metal Boye hooks. I get the impression most Tunisian crocheters prefer inline. I bought my set just before Sewrella came out with hers. I’m glad you did a review. I really would rather have metal. Perhaps Sewrella will tweak the product to incline swivel cords. I’d probably consider buying a set.

I'm new too and struggled with getting started with traditional crochet, but I took much easier to Tunisian. It was a gateway craft in my case 🤭 Once I better understood exactly what I was looking at, as regards the anatomy of the stitches, I tried my luck again with traditional crochet and the difference compared to my first attempt was like night and day! All this to say that you may find it an easy transition to Tunisian now that you've started with traditional crochet, plus it keeps things interesting and it's nice to be able to do both, with the help of Toni's tutorials 😊

Hey Tony, this was such a well made video very detailed and answered all the questions that we could possibly have about these Tunisian crochet hooks. Good to know that we all had the same feelings and thoughts about these hooks. It’s very validating to know that the same points that I made in my video are the same feelings that you also have that you made in your video as as a more seasoned Tunisian crocheters. But I think the biggest problem is going to be this supply issue. I would love to get my hands on them and review them but what’s the point if nobody can buy them because they’re always sold out. I hope that it’s something that Swella can improve on. All in all great video and I look forward to your next hook review!

Maybe someday I would consider buying these hooks, but as a beginner to Tunisian Crochet, I can't justify the expense. They are gorgeous, and for me, the smaller sizes I would probably just use them as regular crochet hooks. Hey, I have not gotten a set of interchangeable knitting needles because I can't decide which ones I really want. My reason is that if I'm going to spend that much hard earned money, I better be sure that I love them and that I will use them all the time. I agree with everything you said about these hooks.
