  • I recently tried the Tempeh Tikki Masala tacos from Purple Carrot. I really like the idea of "exotic" tacos, and so the notion of Indian flavors in a taco really appealed to me. And the flavors here did not disappoint. The Tikki Marsala sauce made with onion, ginger, garlic, tomato pasta and garam masala was quite rich & tasty. For me, I could have used a bit more heat in the sauce, but that could easily be added with a bit of chili pepper.

The only thing I didn't really care for was the Tempeh itself. Admittedly, this is where being a meat eater comes into play. The Tempeh (a soy product) didn't taste like much of anything - not bad at all, but also not good. It provided the "bulk" of the taco as a meat replacement, but honestly with every bite, a little voice in my head called out...."chicken would be better".

Man. I love tempeh. And Indian food, and Mexican food. But good lord they do not all belong together. This recipe is insane. It doesn't know what it's trying to be.
If you want some good tempeh just slice it up how you did, but also into thirds lengthwise, and give it a 30 minute pickle in water, salt and apple cider vinegar. Then drain it, let dry a bit (you don't want it wet going into a pan full of hot oil), and just fry it up until it's good and crispy. Eat it with some spicy peanut sauce, or even just straight hot sauce.
You can also just run it through a cheese grater and fry it for some crispy little bacon-bits type stuff. Crunchy, salty, oily little nuggets of delicious.
I really hope you give tempeh a second chance, because this recipe is not... what you're supposed to do with it.
Also the pronunciation you settled on was pretty good, I think.
