- Today I'll be answering the question: Why does Vanitas look like Sora? This seems to be asked upon quite a lot of my videos so here is the answer :)

@@base21 This was 6 years ago lol, but I can recall calling them others because Roxas says to Sora in KHII "You make a good other." That's why I said Sora's other, being his other half, and used the same logic for Vanitas and Ventus.

Ven's heart breaks due to Xehanort tearing the darkness out of Ven. Darkness manifests itself into a boy with no face (Vanitas). Meanwhile, Sora's heart joins Ven's heart and promises to fill the destroyed part until Ven is strong enough to fill it back himself. At this point and until the end, Vanitas still has no face. He's still just the pure darkness that was torn out of Ven. It is only until the Keyblade Graveyard that Vanitas reveals to have Sora's face. And the reason I believe that he reveals here, is because he's finally returning to Ven's heart. However, Sora's heart is still there, so Vanitas consequently takes on the appearance of Sora. And that's why Vanitas looks like Sora. The older form of Sora is due to Vanitas being the same age as Ven, which is 15-16ish.
The problem I have with Cynical and others' explanations is that they claim Vanitas looks like Sora because Sora is in Ven's heart, and that's it. But Sora went into Ven's heart after Vanitas was extracted from Ven, so Sora's heart did not impact Vanitas. That is why Vanitas does not have a face for the majority of the game.
Now, as far as I know, there's no proof or official-ness to my theory, but in the most logical and flawless explanation, this seems to be it.
U r are correct and so are they, vanitas was more like a faceless heartless, a boy with no face like that cloaked figure Nightmare in kh3d.
Ventus heart was more or less recovered at the start of the game but due to that connection with Sora, Vanitas took on Sora's look.
yeah that's what confused me was that his heart had been extracted already but sora was still the appearance taken on later. This makes sense to me

When Vanitas was created by Xehanort, Vanitas did not have face. Hence the mask Vanitas wore. When Sora's heart healed Ventus's heart, Vanitas took on Sora's appearance. Why?
The act of creating Vanitas shattered Ventus's heart, making both Ventus and Vanitas incomplete, but connected, beings. They are two halves of the same whole. When Sora's heart healed Ventus's heart, it made Ventus complete again. By completing the Yang (Ventus), it also completed the Yin (Vanitas). However, a person cannot be complete without a face, so Vanitas took on the likeness of the heart that completed him, Sora.
The prenatal heart of Sora, caused two incomplete beings to become complete beings again and still was a fully complete heart afterwards. There is no mention that Sora was a sickly baby or anything like that, so we can assume that even after doing this, Sora suffered no ill effects. Sora's heart has been shown to be very strong throughout the series. The situation with Ventus and Vanitas is a testament to this fact even before Sora had been born.

@@jakielou1884 Yeah there is a bit of a time skip from when Vanitas was created and when the gameplay of BBS happens.
Remember Terra, Aqua, and Ven are established to be very strong friends during the game of BBS so I'd say a few years have passed between then and the game starting.
So, Sora aging up to the age of 4 fits fine with that timeline. Just means Ven apprenticed with Eraqus for 4 years before Terra and Aqua's Mark of Mastery Exam.

In the novels, Vanitas's life between his creation and the events of Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep is expanded upon. At first, Vanitas was a faceless being much like a Heartless but with red eyes, that felt sad for his separation from Ventus.
When a newborn's heart came in contact with Ventus's fractured heart, he also directly contacted Vanitas's heart. After feeling a sharp pain in his chest, Vanitas's body fell to the ground of the wasteland near the Keyblade Graveyard and almost lost his consciousness, feeling being engulfed by absolute Darkness. That was when Vanitas heard Sora's voice and then he saw Light.
The Light eventually surrounded his whole body. He then heard a voice saying, "Let's open the door". Vanitas then opened his eyes and found out that now he had a normal boy's face. He also realized that someone, probably also a newborn heart like himself, had saved Ventus's heart from completely fading away.
basically vanitas looks like sora for the same reason roxas looks like ventus: connected hearts.
Hollis Woods I always saw the whole Roxas/Ventus thing by thinking that Ven's heart was a hitchhiker when Sora's Nobody was made. I may be out of left field on this... but if ripping Vanitas from Ventus caused Ventus' heart to break in half, would it not follow that Vanitas' heart would be broken in the same way? Therefore is it possible that Sora filled both Ventus' and Vanitas' heart in that opening scene? Cynical's theory and this one would make sense. Just throwing other ideas out there.
"Why does Vanitas like look Sora"
I feel like you explain this in a very confusing way. Its pretty simple: Ventus's darkness is extracted from himself by Xehanort which creates Vanitas. The part of Ventus's heart that is left cries out for help and Sora answers the cry. The "Dark" half of Ventus's heart is patched up and covered up by Sora's heart. The part that is patched up by Sora's heart being where Ventus's darkness SHOULD have been. Since Vanitas is technically ventus's darkness, the form that contains said darkness is technically Sora not Ventus. So Vanitas looks like Sora. Had Sora not patched up ventus's heart then Vanitas would have no physical features at all since the part of ventus's heart that is darkness would have been missing(Or perhaps he would look like Ventus...but I doubt it)

Don't you have it backwards? Sora isn't the vessel, he is the donor and Ventus is the vessel; and since Venitus and Ventus are the same person, Sora's heart changes the vessel of Venitus because that's the part of Ventus's heart that Sora filled.

I understand the reason Vanitas LOOKS like Sora, but why is he the "older" version? Like why isn't he Sora from KH1 instead?
Braden Welke I think it's because he's a part of Ventus' heart (the dark part) He took on the same age as Ventus instead of young Sora... I think

But I mean wouldn't the by far more reasonable explanation be; since Soras heart shapes itself to fill the void left by Vanitas when Soras heart connects to Ventus, Soras appearance is shaped/altered by Vanitas. At no point is it proven Vanitas adjusts himself to be like Sora(appearancewise or else for that matter) but in the beginning Soras heart clearly attempts to adjust to shape the missing part of Ventus heart, i.e. the part that used to make up Vanitas.

I think the best way to explain this is by looking at kh 358/2 and kh2 where people saw sora as roxas because thats who they knew and roxas is sirta like soras other half. Going with that line of thought, since vanitas is the other half of ven and sora is part of vens heart, you could reason that vanitas might not actually look like sora and maybe ven sees vanitas as sora because he knows that vanitas is a part of him and sora is a part of him. So he rationalized vanitas to look like sora simply because they complete him but soras face is the only real face in his heart. He knows soras face because hearts contain memories and soras heart repaired vens and became a part of it.
So basically, when Sora merged his heart with Ventus, he also connected his heart to Vanitas because Vanitas and Ventus are two parts of the same whole. When Vanitas was created, he did not have a face, similar to some heartless. Only once his heart combined with Sora's did he take on his appearance.

vanitas looks like sora because of ven. by that i mean ven coming in contact with an infant sora's heart gave sora the look that he has. aqua even said he looks like ven and people haven't stopped saying how much sora looks like roxas since kh2 started and roxas is identical to ven because a part of ven is in sora. basically vanitas had no face till that biz with sora's heart when he got pulled out of ven which mad him look like the future version of the baby whose looks they altered by coming in contact with him. You're thinking too far ahead of this. All Final fantasy looking characters look the fucking same. Cloud and Squall for example. Doesn't mean that Vens heart influenced Soras appearance lol if he did he'd have a Roxas Haircut.
Sora is Sora Ven is Ven
Anyways. Yes Roxas is the way he is because of Vens heart residing in Soras. and so on. But Sora looking the way he does because of Ven is ridiculous, the Organization members kept saying he looked like him or he reminded them of Roxas because they are the same person. Roxas is his nobody.
I kinda hope Vanitas returns in KH3. It'd be interesting to see how the characters react to the Sora look-a-like.

One massive hole in your theory. The timeline. Vanitas was extracted from Ventus when Xehanort wanted to create the keyblade. Xehanort sent Vanitas out to screw up the worlds while Xehanort took Ven to the Destiny Islands. There, Ven was taken in by Sora's heart and healed. So why would Vanitas look like Sora if he was already created? Further more, why would he look like an older Sora?
Not his theory. Nomura himself confirmed this is the reason.
As to WHY it effected Vanitas, it's because Vanitas is still technically part of Ventus, he just exists outside of him instead of inside of him. Which means that Sora's Heart bonding with Ven's had a ripple effect on Vanitas.
As to why he looks older, it's because he is physically 15ish years old. That's what Sora looked like at that age.

Evnyofdeath But that doesn't address the issue of Vanitas looking like Sora BEFORE Vanitas' reunion with Ventus- as he did before possessing Ventus and starting the reunion. Your comment would only explain this IF Vanitas was created AFTER Ventus and Sora were connected- which would explain why Roxas looks like Ventus instead of Sora. But Vanitas was born WAY before that- when Xehanort took the darkness out of Ven when he'd been defeated by the Heartless prior to the events of BBS. And if this explanation did come from Nomura, he needs to rethink all that because he seems to be forgetting the timeline of events here.
Furthermore, how does this ALSO affect Riku's Dark Form- as Vanitas' body/attire/etc. is basically a pallet swap of Riku's Dark Form. My only explanation on THAT is that it was an extension of Xehanort's memories after Ansem (Heartless) possessed Riku- but Riku had his Dark Form in the first Boss Fight in Hollow Bastion in KH1- before Ansem possessed him, but after Maleficent (who had nothing to do with Vanitas) gave him more power.
That's not when Ventus FIRST connected to Sora. Remember when Ventus' comatose body was dropped onto Destiny Islands by Xehanort? A heart reached out and supported Ven's collapsing heart. That heart was Sora. THIS is when Vanitas started looking like Sora.

The light novel (not the manga) (which is somewhat canon) said that Vanitas looked like a Heartless with red eyes. When Ventus forged his heart with Sora, he lend his dark brother a hand and gave him Sora's face.
The only thing I want to know is when Ven finally gets his heart back.. I wonder if that will affect the way Sora strength goals because if you think about it it could be possible that sore is such a fighter because vens heart was always part of him sharing abilities

But sora only comes into the picture after vanitas has already left ventus. At that point vanitas should be his own entity and unaffected by sora's decision, no?
This brings up a question that I've wanted an answer to for a VEEEEEEEERRRY long time: Who/What is the voice that the characters hear in Dive to the Heart (the stained glass pillars), as well as just before the final battle in KH1?
No offense, but your constant repeating and mixing up words make this a lot harder to understand than it needs to be.
Sora and Vanitas are similar in appearance because Sora's heart connected to Ventus around the same time that Vanitas came to being.
Ventus' heart was Broken and Sora was the piece to make it whole again so that means Vanitas and Sora are the same peice of Ventus' heart

Here's my interpretation of his appearance:
The fractured part of Ven's heart became Vanitas. After Sora entered Ven's heart, Vanitas's own "heart" reacted by mirroring Sora's heart's appearance in Ven's heart.
Vanitas probably at first looked like a strange or scarred version of Ventus under his helmet when he first emerges as his own being. This can kind of be up for interpretation, as Aqua and King Mickey actually fight a Ventus/Vanitas appearing character.
One could argue that was just because their hearts were one again as the X-Blade was being forged, but I still see Vanitas's original appearance being Ventus as a possibility. But that's just how I personally see it.
...I'm glad I was able to get that all out without having a stroke.
I think you guys have it backwards. It's not that Vanitas looks like Sora, its that Sora looks like Vanitas. In the short Sparknotes version, Ventus and Sora have shared each others hearts, first Sora helping Ventus, and then when Ventus' heart became incomplete after the X-blade battle, Ventus' heart goes into Sora. This is why Sora and Roxas has the ability to use two keyblades, because their hearts contain two keyblade wielders. So pretty much, since Ventus and Vanitas are pretty much the same person, like Ying and Yang, when Ventus goes into Sora's heart, it alters Sora's look, to equal the Ying and Yang appearance. Thats also why Roxas looks like Ventus, because just like the Ventus and Vanitas Ying and Yang, Its the Sora and roxas. YYYYEEEEETTT!!

That's true. But when did Vanitas ever make contact with Sora. It makes sense that darkness and light can alter people's appearance, the same way Ansem's heartless can make Riku look exactly like him in Kingdom Hearts (1, 2, and 358/2 days.) So I feel it's possible that, since the "Vanitas" look is technically the darkness and has always been in Ventus's heart, when Ventus went to Sora, that look transferred into Sora, altering his appearance.

One thing weird about Kingdom Hearts, all Variations of Sora have similar faces like Ventus and Roxas(Exactly the same actually) but they are different characters and persons, Sora and Vanitas, Xion and Kairi, all characters with the same face but they are totally different characters but...All Xehanort's looks different but are the same person
Since Vanitas is the Anti version of Ventus, what doesn’t seem to make since to me is why does he has the appearance of Sora when Ventus wasn’t even known at this time of the Story, what they should of did was made Vanitas just stayed wearing Ventus hair.
I mean, it really makes sense... The "Heart shapes the vessel" statement would explain why Roxas looks so similar to Ven, he had his heart thanks to Xehanort.

ASLO this: this similarity is due to Sora's heart connecting with Ventus near the beginning of the game, and had anyone else connected with Ventus's heart, Vanitas would look like that person. His appearance prior to Ventus's connection with Sora was that of a humanoid creature similar to a Heartless but with red eyes

I thought it was the other way around and that Sora grew up to look like Vanitas since Vanitas is part of Ventus and when Sora accepted Ventus into his heart he also accepted Vanitas who lingers in and is a part of Sora's darkness. Sora's body was shaped into the form of the hearts he cared showing how much of an impact Sora's darkness and Vanitas actually have on Sora.
That's true cause they even explained it in the game as well how sora's heart is connected to many others.
Vanitas looks like Sora because they were too lazy to come up with a new character design but thought having him be another Roxas look alike would be too confusing. Also so they could capitalize on the novelty of having an "evil Sora".

Have you noticed in the opening or when aqua vents and Terra were fighting xeanort and vanitas there's an X in the battlefield were xeanort and vanitas were walking which that's an Easter egg of the X blade
It cant be. purely because sora was in touch with ventus AFTER vantias had already been extracted. so vanitas had no connection with ventus at the point of the joining of sora and ventus. for vanitas to look like sora because of the bonding makes no sense because vanitas was already out and independent, thanks to xehanort

I think that Ventus' heart wasn't merged with Sora until after the creation of Vanitas.
However it's likely that Vanitas connected to Sora the same way Ventus did. So when Vanitas died that part of Sora returned to him, and at the end of BBS Ventus gives Sora most of his heart, allowing him to wield a keyblade in future games.
Its been a while since i played bbs but i did not understand this, ok Ventus heart was fragmented and the light part went to Sora but not the darkness.. so.. that doesnt make sense unless... since is a same heart and one part of it is in sora the other part could be affected as well? is the only possible eplanation because as far as i know the darkness didnt go to soras heart
So, I have to ask. What about Eraqus? I mean because terra took in his heart after defeating him and is now carried into Terranort will there be a Xemnas part that looks like Eraqus? We already had one that looks like Terra (Xeahnort Nobody).
So thats why Sora has a ability skills to fight the monsters like Pro cause Ventus has a Pure light heart and Vanitas has the skilled to fight if they were together sora can learn the abilities that they were had
Ventus didn't go into Sora's heart until the end after his battle. That's why his body was asleep in that Chamber that Aqua had made for him. Plus there's a scene of Vanities coming right out of Ventus when he was whole (had dark and light) and Sora had nothing to do with him then. So this assumption is false from the very beginning that he only would have moved into Sora's heart after meeting him. So it is still a mystery that Vanitis looks like Sora. I think everyone just needs to accept that not everything is visible or easily predictable on KH. What would be the point of any story line if you can predict it or an ongoing story line to be so easily read? Let's all accept that they were careful about what to reveal to bring about our curiosity and thirst for more KH games. It will stay a mystery until more is revealed officially!
I think that vanitas face slowly took shape similar to soras after ventus heart connected with soras heart maybe that was the reason why vanitas had to wear a helmet

Theory: Upon Vanitas' creation Xehanort desired to place his entire heart inside the dark vessel as he intended to do with Ventus but the moment of sentimental lingering of taking the comatosed Ven to Destiny Isl, Sora's heart interrupted the process- and it was Vanitas' heart seeking Sora at the end as Ven is too far gone and the best of him is Roxas now

It was just the hearts being link Vanitas got affected by it which lead the appearance yet so dark... I find it creepy there's a black haired creepy evil version of sora... Just saying lol great video!!

Ven was knocked out then Master Xenort, (sorry if spelling is wrong) took the darkness out. After he took the darkness out is when his heart was broken and merged with Sora. They were at the destiny island at that point and he left him there. So Venitas was made before Sora and Ven did there heart repair/acceptance thing.

correct me if I'm but on a different note at the begging of bbs xehanort was going to leave ventus on destiny islands after the extraction left his heart shattered. that's when his heart came into contact with sora's and its then when to my believe ven first summons a key blade because xehanort sounds confused and excited about it and I believe that's why he is sent to train with aqua and terra so why do they say sora only has a keyblde because of him when it seemed he didn't even have one in till that moment. now also does anyone have an answer for why xehanort picked ventus to extract the dark side out of what made him special
Wait, but Vanitas's fragment heart was extracted from Ventus, so by the time Sora connected with Ventus, Vanitas was already made and his appearance should have not been affected by what happened in Ven's heart, cause he was already made by then, and his appearance should have already been Ven's by then as well.

because of the fact that.
Basically, what happened was ventus heart was broken due to the extraction of darkness to create vanitas but sora's heart was healing ventus heart so ventus heartless took also a piece of sora's heart, which created vanitas appearance.
This is also the reason why sora's nobody looks like ventus, since ventus took place in sora's heart, roxas took the form of ventus but is sora's nobody.
Its all about the heart connections in kingdom hearts. Everyone is literally connected to someone.

I think I got the most twisted logic out of this...
From how things are worded, to me at least, this is saying that Sora technically, if going by order of events, could wield a Keyblade *from the start*. His infant heart coming into contact with Ventus' means that Ventus GAINED his ability to wield a Keyblade from Sora. This is somewhat backed up by Xehanort's surprise when Ventus' semi-lifeless body moved and summoned the Keyblade.
Wasn't there a cutscene before Xehanort separated the darkness from Ventus with Ventus fighting in the middle of a bunch of neoshadows, being "trained" by Xehanort?
Eventually, they'll have to explain how Sora will use the keyblade without Ventus, so I'd like to think a part of your theory is correct. Only time will tell, I suppose :)
It's the reverse. Sora's able to wield it because he joined with Ventus's heart. So the whole business about the Keyblade moving down the list from Riku to Sora in the first game was only half true.

I still got confused about this. When I was playing bbs...the fragment was vanitas. AFTER xehnort extracted ventus' heart, soras heart was merged with ventus. Vanitas was formed before sora merged with ventus right?
I was thinking the EXACT thing. Everyone is forgetting that Vanitas was formed BEFORE young Sora mended Ventus' heart at the end of the game. Smh..
Sora only came because he saw a fragmented heart. It was fragmented because Vanitas had already been extracted. It is pure coincidence, and a more logical explanation would be to taunt Ventus. It is probably a buildup for a battle when Sora and Ventus meet in KH3.
But Vanitas was formed prior Ventus was given a piece of Sora's light. That would mean Vanitas has always looked like Sora, even before Ven's heart attracted Sora's. Would it make more sense in a twisted way that the darkness from Xehanort's heart shaped Vanitas that way because Xehanort actually has a much deeper connection to Sora than anyone actually knows so far? Like Xehanort is actually his grandfather?

Not completely related to Vanitas but to the X-Blade and Keyblades in general. In KH1, the Keyblade is shown to be pretty unique, only Sora and Mickey have one - the Key of Light and the Key of Darkness, respectively, However, Riku gets a keyblade, in KH2 Kairi seems to get one. Then we get BBS where there are keyblades everywhere.
So, it comes across as they they're not that unique really but I don't understand what that means for the Key of Light and Darkness. Those keys seem fairly unique - they're the only ones we see in the "Kingdom Key" form and the X-Blade seems to have two Kingdom Keys in it. Are Sora and Mickey's keys different somehow?
X blade is a light and dark keyblade mixed into one with 2 hearts. BBS is before KH1 and 2, so during that time there were alot of keyblade users but there werent such things as heartless in BBS they dark creatures were called unbirth. but after xehanort created the heart in the sky that awakened true darkness across all worlds and bringing out the darkness inside Tera as you can see at the end of the trailer if you watched it. Heartless only started being created cus of xehanort
Also why does Riku's dark form looks like Vanitas's?
So either one of two things could happen in KH3. Ventus sees Sora, notices how much he looks like Vanitas and comes to the realization that Sora is the guy that rescued his heart. Or Ventus sees Sora, and after being out of it for a while, has a distorted vision of Vanitas and mistakes Sora for Vanitas and tries to fight him.
Maybe, but Vanitas had black hair and the yellow eyes. I think it would be hard to assume Sora is Vanitas or vice versa.

I think they have to defeat Xehanort first because he holds a part of Terra.
rishawn98 what a lot of people think is that there is a different being called Terra-nort (I think that how they spell it) that is Terra's body being controlled by a piece of Xehanort. And don't forget about the Lingering Will now...

Am I the only one who was appalled at the fact Master Xehanort was just going to leave Ventus laying there on the Paopu fruit tree WHERE SOME LITTLE KID COULD HAVE FOUND HIM!!!!!
The thing is, Vanitas came into being before Ven connected with Sora. Does that mean Sora was altered to look like the part of Ven that was gone? It could be that Sora looks like Vanitas instead of Vanitas looking like Sora. Mostly, I just really can't wait dor Ven to wake up.
He looks like Sora because the part that was taken out of Ven's heart was healed by Sora at the start of the game.
Because Vanitas was that part of Vens heart that got healed by Sora which also affected him to take on Sora's identity.
It's also possible that Sora may have also filled in the rest of a heart for Vanitas as well since he was only a fragment of Ventus.
And by healed I mean Sora conntected his heart to theirs to fill in the missing pieces, hence why the faceless Vanitas got Sora's look, you could say that Sora's heart acted as duct tape.

Makes you wonder what happened to Ventus' heart when Sora released Kairi's heart in Hollow Bastion because it was clearly seen that multiple hearts were released. The hearts were returning to their vessels, so wouldn't Ventus' heart return to his body after that?

But Vanitas was created BEFORE Ven's heart even encountered Sora. So how could Vanitas take the appearance of someone if the connection hadn't been made yet?
