I remember when this came out. It was aired widely and in time slots easy for children to see. I was no longer a child but it was one of the most scary things I'd ever seen on TV at that time. Now it would be hardly noticed. But at that time, people were VERY upset about this airing.
In Fangoria magazine (October 1979) a fan wrote in and asked why this commercial featuring Jim Danforth's rot monster disappeared from the airwaves. Fangoria reached out to the ad agency who then confirmed they took the ad down because it was deemed "hideous" and "scary" by a vocal group of viewers. Later, they edited to a lesser version and it reaired without incident.
This was a very expensive commercial to make because of the animation at the time. So because so much of the budget went to the creation of the commercial they could only afford to air it on TV after 11:00pm. Apparently few people saw it. I remember seeing it after Saturday Night Live and thinking it was really cool.
I know the story behind this. The old animation cost so much to make they did not have enough to air the commercial often. They had this story on a Johnny Carson show . I have it on tape somewhere . Thanks for the post .

I remember having nightmares about this after watching it back in '77.
One of my absolute favorites!

I do remember this comercial ( from 1977/8 ) and have been waiting for it to turn up on here eventualy. At long last! Thanks!
A classic commercial if ever there was one. Thank you, KLXT.
The Animation was done by Jim Danforth not David Allen. Great commercial. A very nice print of a very rare TV spot indeed...
Thanks for the correction. Finally made the change today after comments on the Classic Horror Film Board jogged my memory.
