And to avoid an inequality between East & West, you keep the conferences, in every divisions. So: MLS will have a Top division with 20 teams (10 East & 10 West) The first 8 teams in each conference will participate in the playoffs format The bottom 2 teams of each conference (East & West) will be relegated MLS lower division will have 20 teams too (10 East & 10 West) The top 2 teams in each conference (East & West) will be promoted And so on if you add more divs..
So are you saying San Antonio FC who has San Antonio Spurs ownership group, Tampa Bay Rowdies who are owned by the Tampa Bay Rays, Indy Eleven, North Carolina FC, Sacramento Republic FC, Louisville City FC and others couldn't benefit from Pro Rel?
Imagine all the stories U.S soccer still has to tell. For expample it is a big thing for a club if they never get relegated out of the highest league. Or imagine two clubs that already have a rivalary, suddenly face each other in a duel for the spot in the top league. Just some of thousand more examples.
It's a franchise system. Teams are literally created already in the top tier... or actually, they BUY their place in the league. It's different in sports elsewhere. Clubs are born small and grow and climb the leagues.
Relegation and promotion would be a healthy thing for MLS and an example for other sports in America. But if they do they should get rid of this franchise thing. Get rid of the draft and, instead, set up solid youth academies working together with local amateur clubs, colleges and universities. Introduce some sort of 50+1 percent shares ruling. Build soccer specific grounds. Allow multiple clubs in a city. Football feeds of rivalries. Create a piramid with two premier divisions, three first and five second divisions. I'm convinced that fans will support their local team even when they get relegated, because it will create this "good-times-bad-times-but-we'll-stick-together feel".
Completely impossible given the way MLS was founded. People are also dramatically underestimating the impact of the US's size on this system. England is smaller than New England, yet far more populous. Almost any random scattering of clubs is going to give you decent coverage and representation in England. What happens if all the best teams in the US are tucked in one corner of the map, or scattered to the winds? How do you negotiate TV and media contracts when they have no idea what parts of the country will be included and excluded? Unless they break up into a dozen or more regionally restricted leagues, just like Europe is broken up into 33 compact countries, this doesn't work.
This is how to do a promotion/relegation in MLS. If the last two losing teams in each division subject to relegation, then they can play a face off that determines who stays in MLS. The winner stays and the loser gets relegated.

Of course promotion and relegation makes sense for American soccer with it being the best structure used for growing the sport, however, MLS want to push ahead with the single league system that’s playing on the same playbook as other American sports leagues. Despite the puzzling way MLS is becoming more of a hybrid between the two systems by it’s franchises growing talent through its own academies more so than the college soccer draft picks, it’s still less effective compared uses a merit division system with every division using the same academy system. The two structures do not compliment each other because the massive amount of the American population cut off from it.
Europen football is where it is bcs the potential risks and rewards were so high in every major league. If a team wont perform they dont deserve to be in MLS. This is the only way American soccer could grow...
We arent it will never happen as the owners will never let their assets be devalued by the chance of relegation. Meritocracy in USSF and MLS is a fairytale. I want it to happen, it never will.
Too many people assume that pro/rel in the US would lead to the results that we see in England, but that's absolutely not true. In all likelihood, it would lead to the results that we see in Mexico. And in Mexico, despite a highly dedicated fan base and in spite of the fact that Liga MX is also the most popular league in the US, there have been some real problems at both the top tier and the second tier. If you don't know what those problems are, that means you haven't been paying attention. I for one am So happy that the US Soccer pyramid doesn't have the problems of the Mexican system, and Mexico is very likely to move away from their current model in order to stay competitive with MLS. They are adjusting to our way of doing this, not the other way around.
Why is this even a discussion? NO PRO REL! We don’t need it, fans don’t want it and it won’t bring anything to the game. Also the fact that people are only watching the US Open cup because Messi is in it sad. There is a long standing history of this tournament and US Soccer should be promoting the hell out this tournament every year. If Messi wasn’t in the league then this final would have been televised on ESPN 8 The Ocho.
Unfortunately. I think we should boycott MLS. Many passionate fanbases of big clubs like my club D.C. United were denied entry because of the MLS's greed.
MLS would grow and become even bigger and better with pro/rel. As an American my experience in "real" futbol began in Spain in 1972. I discovered the beautiful game when Barcelona, led by Johan Cruyff, won the Spanish 1st Division championship. I still follow the Spanish La Liga to this day. I have zero interest in MSL because the player talent, with a few exceptions, is Spanish third division quality at best. In Spain pro/rel adds real excitement to the season and the three second division teams that make it to La Liga get a huge boost in income and a real chance to stay up (depending on the competence of their club management.) Teams in La Liga that are relegated don't lose any fan support, but they do lose that La Liga pay day, so it also requires astute club management and financial backing to win their way back into La Liga. It is very exciting for the fans. I live in Oklahoma City and we have a USL Championship team the Energy. Because there is no field in Oklahoma City that meets USL requirements, the Energy has suspended play until a new stadium is completed in 2026. I support our local club and would love to be part of a club that was serious about getting promoted to the MSL. I would be willing to pay more for tickets to buy better players, etc.
Can we just put an end to this. Can we stop trying to be like Europe. Let’s just do our own thing like we always do. There’s plenty of leagues with promotion relegation. How does promotion relegation honestly make things better? Basketball, football, baseball, hockey, so forth, doesn’t have it. Those leagues are among the best if not the best. If promotion and relegation truly made teams and players that much better, wouldn’t other sports adopt it to get a competitive edge? Why relegate the whole team? Like mass punishment for people that have no true say so. Stadium workers, outside shop owners, etc. sometimes things are outside people’s control (looking at sounders and Atlanta). Lots of injuries, lots of reserves and lots of losses. Imagine relegating sounders because they had to many injuries.

I know TONS of people that wouldn't care anything about that. It just won't work.
The issue is that they have 30+ teams. You can't do pro/rel when you have that many teams at the top level. The numbers don't work out.
@@mmmcounts but it’s possible to do a 20-20 MLS…? In the first division, the top 16 is in the playoffs, and the 4 teams that don’t participate, will be relegated. And to avoid an inequality between East & West, you keep the conferences, in every divisions. So:
MLS will have a Top division with 20 teams (10 East & 10 West)
The first 8 teams in each conference will participate in the playoffs format
The bottom 2 teams of each conference (East & West) will be relegated
MLS lower division will have 20 teams too (10 East & 10 West)
The top 2 teams in each conference (East & West) will be promoted
And so on if you add more divs..
If MLS won’t do it, USL needs to. However, It really comes down to the fans and how bad they want it. Boycotting MLS games will get their attention.
They are nowhere near close, the USL clubs don’t have the finances to survive a promotion/relegation system
Just found out Jimmy Conrad is here nice!
This is how to do a promotion/relegation in MLS. If the last two losing teams in each division subject to relegation, then they can play a face off that determines who stays in MLS. The winner stays and the loser gets relegated.
Absolutely not. This is the United States. Not Europe or South America. It won't work here. It would only close the doors to getting more fans of other sports to like soccer here in the USA. And MLS and soccer will never be No. 1 in the USA if they do it. Normal sports fans in the USA don't have to deal with their team getting relegated in the NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL. Jesus, you yanks are pathetic moaners and whingers. You will never be in the top flight of soccer the way you carry on.
After Messi retires the league will go back to the way it was before, relegation promotion is essential and promote competition and consequences for bad performances🤷🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Jimmy is back back Are used to watch him on copa90 every day after school
Go back to the way it was? MLS has NEVER had a promotion/relegation system.
@@B0CAJUN10RS1995he means every time MLS gets a huge signing like Beckham, Zlatan, Thierry and now Messi. After they stop playing all the progress MLS made when they arrived seems to disappear and we end up right back where we were before they arrived. Pro/Rel is essesntial to promote good performance… it’s a lasting progress that will help the league not just for 2 or 3 seasons.
@@jordinhocharlesYou don’t follow the league if you think that is true
@@DeTaxxman I’ve kept up with MLS for years but I don’t have a team I’m loyal to, it was only galaxy for a while then it became LAFC because Of Bale
it’s like I support a certain players not a team and once the player retires I have no interest
Yes and no Soccer in America is growing slowly it will take another 10 years to see some more growth. Messi coming to MLS is good for the long term.
they should just do promotion and relegation of players instead mixed with bottom teams get first picks in drafting
I would start watching if it was promotion relagation would make mls usl way more competitive as a scotsman European in my opinion
The idea. of tanking is the worst part of American sports. I support the Miami Heat and thankfully its been quite a while that happens but if i follow a team who did this id just stop watching
I am a Crew fan, this just sounds like another plan to get ride of us.
MESSI 🐐
Never mind Messi…he is not the future!
If MLS remains closed I’m hoping USL opens up and swallows MLS.
Europen football is where it is bcs the potential risks and rewards were so high in every major league. If a team wont perform they dont deserve to be in MLS. This is the only way American soccer could grow...
But what if….MLS acquires more & more teams so all the MLS divisions would be formed by franchises?
Peter knows soccer!
We arent it will never happen as the owners will never let their assets be devalued by the chance of relegation. Meritocracy in USSF and MLS is a fairytale. I want it to happen, it never will.
Demand it!
I think it best you stick with gridiron. I think Association football is beyond you guys!
@@DerekOwenLangdon oh man you are clever. No one calls it “gridiron football”….its just football
It would be so good for the league. Makes no sense to reward the worst teams with first draft picks
Makes it so that we don't have one or two teams winning every year
Right on bud! You ain’t all brain dead over there then.
@@DerekOwenLangdon are you talking to me or the other guy?
They fear Louisville City Promotion
i will support pro/rel when a club like Real Madrid, Arsenal, or Liverpool gets pro/rel...
What kinda of question is this not close 😂
Unfortunately, this Open Cup talk didn't age well.
In Spain pro/rel adds real excitement to the season and the three second division teams that make it to La Liga get a huge boost in income and a real chance to stay up (depending on the competence of their club management.)
Teams in La Liga that are relegated don't lose any fan support, but they do lose that La Liga pay day, so it also requires astute club management and financial backing to win their way back into La Liga.
Wait no promotion or regulation? Wtf
Wouldn’t work here imo
BOY. Isn't this whole interview super relevant now.
Johns Terrace
Won’t ever happen to much money invested.
exactly this is why it’ll never happen
MLS Upper and MLS Lower. Everything is still MLS and the mid teams will fight more for pro/rel
US soccer will flounder without pro/rel. If you want MLS to continue to import ageing players carry on for all I care.
@@DerekOwenLangdon can you give me some specifics? Honest question/conversation. I don’t see how any other American sport has floundered without promotion and relegation. I don’t see the nba sending teams to g-league and it affecting development. Why would it affect our sport?
@@thejackofalltrades5171 He can't give you specifics because he's just making stuff up.
Top flight soccer wouldn't exist in the US if MLS was an open league.
"Basketball, american football, baseball, hockey, so forth, doesn’t have it. Those leagues are among the best if not the best." those leagues are the best because you're literally the only ones that play those said sports. but football the whole world plays it
we can only hope the USL can do it between there own leagues
but, why?... the NBA and the NFL don't have this and they are the biggest franchises in the world...maybe it works for Europe, but it doesn't work for the U.S...and, anyways isn't it just about watching good soccer?...
I agree,
Exactly... pro/rel is only sustainable in countries where soccer is the singular national obsession or at the very least, doesn't suffer from much competition from rival sports.
