Thank you Bil for the C128 and for making the 80's so so memorable for us

Great video, as always, filled with decades of experience. That being said, for prototype boards and one-offs, the method I prefer is the toothpick one I've learned from CNLohr's video many years ago. You just dispense a bunch of solder paste on something and use a toothpick to paint it onto the pads. Reaaaly easy, no need for a stencil (again, it's great for one-offs, not so much for small production runs) and much better than trying to put substantial pressure on a tube of paste with a needle attached and at the same time keep it steady and precisely positioned.

This is a good video for those people who would be doing a lot of work at home using SMT parts. All this is one of the reason I stick to doing hand-soldering of SMT parts on those rare occasions I'm using SMT parts. I mostly do through hole so any solder paste would probably need to replaced by the time I need it again. It would be a waste of money for me. I did assemble a board a few years ago that had a few 0402 resistors but I prefer nothing smaller than 0603. I acquired a set of tweezers and they really helped the last time I needed to put a couple of SMT LEDs on a PCB. I still mostly stick to through-hole.

Great guide! I learned a few things.
I think the one thing you could have mentioned about solder paste is the different size solder grains (T3/T4/T5). I had issues and spending the extra dollars on a T5 helped a lot.

One trick used in paint-shops to prevent solvent from diffusing out of plastic containers is to store the entire paint-containing-plastic-jar under water. I wonder if something similar may be possible to increase the shelf-life of solder pastes.

Can one use expired solder paste as a solder, instead of solder wire, to use with the soldering iron? I cringe when I hear "just throw it away" and it seems to me it probably just lost the flux solvent, but the flux proper and solder aloy particles are still there.

Hey Bil, do you have a BOM of the different tools you listed or ones you suggest. I'm very curious where you picked up the stencil jig, that would of saved me a lot of headache a few years ago...

Great video. I don't suppose you have any links to the items in this video?😬

Do through-hole if you can, surface mount if you must.

I pulled some 01005 from a broken iPod Nano. I keep them inside two layers on cell tape because they would creep through the crevices of any box you'd store them in. Not to mention they stick to everything because of van der Waals forces.
