  • 🍂 🍁 Welcome to my Fall 2021 Newsletter!
After such a long and dark period, I am truly feeling hopeful for this upcoming season! With theatres really welcoming audiences once again, performing fully staged productions, in the presence of full audiences, I have been emotionally overwhelmed since I started work on Rigoletto in London!
I want to thank every person that has made it to a performance. Your support going forward is what will keep our beautiful art form resonating even more spectacularly! So…after Rigoletto at the Royal Opera House, we’ve got La traviata there, and a series of concerts of Händel’s Theodora, which will tour throughout Europe. And in December I start rehearsals at La Scala for Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi…a role debut for me as Giulietta!
In October I’ve got a couple of concerts in Prague and Parma. My bel canto recital program is constantly changing and both of these concerts will feature different repertoire. We like to keep things fresh! And in December it’ll be a totally NEW experience, in a recital of Zarzuela arias at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and an encore performance in Seville at the Teatro de la Maestranza!
I cannot wait to bring all these amazing dream programs to real audiences!
    → REFLECTIONS
We’ve reached the beginning of a very promising season and I’ve got so much faith going forward, I can hardly contain it! With every new leaf that turns this season, I’ll be counting immense numbers of blessings.
There is nothing more important than love and health, and every day that I count myself as fortunate enough to have both of those, I’ll be thankful to see the sun rise.

Dear Lisette! Today we visited ROH for Traviata. My son Misha is a keen musician, some orchestra members are known to him personally, he was excited about the opportunity to listen to the music - this is not his first Traviata. I grew up in St-Petersburg, always going to Mariinsky and heard Traviata
many times first there , then at ROH in London. I also watched Zeffirelli's film Traviata when it came out ...countless times. I know this opera well, and the last few times I enjoyed it very much, but the story stayed the story, the opera, the skilled singing.
Today, however, some magic happened. You, by the second act, made me believe Violetta as if everything is real. Your voice on a quiet piano is so meaningful, so beautiful , so coming through...And your voice is so free and strong - but there is more in it, than just beauty. I could not believe it but I was being pulled into the magic virtually against my will by your voice.
In the last act I forgot that this is opera. Your beautiful and so desperate sing-scream note got me out of my shell as a listener - this was a real, ill, loveable, fragile human being dying.
I caught myself worrying "she should not get up and walk, she is ill, she's got fever..." - totally out of "opera-visit" reality.
My son was listening to your signing duet with the first violin - his mentor and master, genius violinist Sergey Levitin, with his beautiful violin solo. I was just desperate for Violetta to live. Misha got stunned by the strength of your emotions in your voice - that was the day that opera singer sound got his attention away from the orchestra sound...
By the end, I, and people around me - we all were crying. You brought feelings into every note. Your voice told everything - no loud "caughing" as everyone does -your Violetta coughed everything out already beforehand, she could hardly breath - that was amazing , too...
May I say - from myself and on behalf of my son Misha and my husband - your art touched us to the very core of our souls, you brought the truth back into this opera again!
Misha was screaming BRAVO like crazy, this is the first and only opera singer who got his utter admiration (his Bravo was always reserved for musicians ) , I was embarassed by my wet cheeks, all from tears.
Dearest Lisette, may we wish your great health, so your voice keeps blossoming, great luck, so you get the best venues and the best repertoir, and great happiness - you are an amazing person and a gifted real actress and artist as well as a singer! Please tell your mother a message from us - that her daughter has made some people very happy , very grateful and very deeply feeling today!!!!

Hello Lisette, I'm a huge fan of yours! You are such an amazing singer and a kind human being.
I'm an opera singer as well, not a young one (38 years old) and not as good as you are! I'm looking for advice. But not technical advice. A bit of life advice for an old singer. This message is long, and I know you are busy, but, I'm going to try :)
Let's start by saying I did not have the education you had... I started to sing at 23 years old in Colombia, and suddenly I was singing Mozart and Puccini. I was a rising star. All of my foreign colleagues told me I should leave Colombia and predicted a very successful career in Europe. (I lived in Cuba when I was 18 years old for a year. I studied classical guitar there. I was a classical guitar player before being a singer). After I got my bachelor's degree in Colombia, ( I just studied 2 and half years, plus 2 that I made with a private teacher. I never sang Shubert, Schumann I went directly to Mozart, Puccini, and Verdi) I got a full scholarship at the University of Illinois to do my master's degree which I stupidly decline... I thought I just needed a good teacher and make auditions and I would get the career I wanted. I moved to Miami to study with this famous teacher and it didn't work. I just lost myself. The first years were more about how to survive than having money to pay for my voice lessons. I was studying with a teacher who did not take my process seriously and I gave him the responsibility of being confident of knowing who I was. My fault... I know. Then I moved to Wahington D.C, I was closer to NYC, but to make the story shorter I did what an opera singer is not supposed to do. I changed a lot, my voice teachers, I was practicing 4, 5 hours a day (wrongly) and not having any success and becoming more and more insecure. I'm not trying to present myself as a victim. No, I'm responsible for the wrong decisions that I made. I was more driving and discipline in the past, but if I just can be honest, I'm tired, and sometimes I don't know who I am as a singer, or what can I do. I finished being a human being I promised myself I was not going to be "a frustrated one"... Now I'm living in Europe, I sang and taught in America. I organized concerts by myself because I love singing, I love music and I did not want to quit. And brought me to Italy making money with my concerts. I was trying to give myself a second chance with singing in the country where the opera was born... I love Italy, but people here do not care about opera. At schools, they just want to teach modern singing and I just trying to figure out what to do as a singer at 38 years old. A middle-class singer, like they call singers that are not that bad, but are not that good to be singing at la Scala or La Fenice. Where I'm considered old ( although I do not feel old) and I do know at this age, what can I achieve as a singer... I was very disciplined, I did what I was supposed to do, not perfect I guess, but I tried and it didn't work for me. Now I sing in concerts, and I usually sing Traviata in Venice at this beautiful palace. I always try to improve, to study, to get better. But inside of me, I know that I can do more, but I see that singers my age have done a lot of stuff that I even have done in a year, and then I think if it is worth it... Singers always talk about success, discipline, rejection, but do not talk about this part of the career... What would you say to a singer my age? Who is not in a "young artist program", and not anymore a rising star?. But who feels that still have fire inside, that still can improve and get better... that still thinks that is talented ( I think all of that when I'm not stuck in my head)... Thank you, Lisette!! In bocca al lupo for all of your performances. You are amazing!!

What a very sincere and interesting post! My eldest daughter , who is 29, got to love Traviata when she was a tiny girl... And she then sang in an amateur opera company while finishing school - then she got to Oxford to study law and kept singing, doing solo Carmen etc with Oxford uni orchestra and choir... Now she is a successful practicing barrister - but she went and auditioned by the opera singing post-graduate course at Birmingham conservatoire - she wants to sing Wagner. As a mom, I must say --- what you did, what you chose - enriched your life. don't be unhappy - barristers turn their lives around just to sing :)
