Judy Holliday is amazing. Everyone knows about Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn - and for good reason, they're great actors. Too few people know how terrific Judy Holliday was in her all-too-short career.
She's just brilliant. I've always been a big fan of the Tracy-Hepburn combo but there's no denying that Holliday stole every scene she was in. She knows how to make you laugh and cry at the same time.
It was Katharine Hepburn and George Cukor who got together and hatched a plan to get Judy to appear in Adams Rib and then do the Movie Version of Born Yesterday, in which Holliday did for three years on Broadway..BUT Studio Head Harry Cohen didn’t want an unknown ..I know!!! In his film..so Cukor ( who was going to direct Born Yesterday) and Hepburn gave Adam’s Rib suffering wife to Judy Holliday..to show Cohen and others..that Judy Holliday could act with titans like Hepburn and Tracy…it worked ..after rave reviews and a box office smash..for Adams Rib…Judy Holliday was offered the title role in Born Yesterday and Won Best Actress!
Judy deserved but did not get a supporting actress Oscar nomination for this movie. Many of you probably know that Jean Hagen, who plays the other woman, was supposed to have toured in BORN YESTERDAY, and that her voice a few years later as Lena Lamont in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN was possibly inspired by Judy's BORN YESTERDAY voice, perhaps because Judy's friends from her Revuers days, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, wrote the screenplay for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN.
@@taylormaddux8433 Wikipedia says that Jean Hagen was one of Judy's replacements in BORN YESTERDAY, but IBDB doesn't list her as a replacement. One Internet source says that Jean "...understudied Judy Holliday in BORN YESTERDAY and was able to play the role for a month during Holliday’s vacation." Another Internet source says, "Ironically, Jean Hagen had performed that role [of Billie] in the off-Broadway tour of BORN YESTERDAY, and knew it well."

How can you not fall in love with Judy Holliday?

I agree, and I read that Hepburn insisted that the camera focus on Judy for most of the scene.

I didn't know Jean Hagen supposed to tour with Born Yesterday? Can you tell us why she didn't tour?

@@padroneoso Thanks!
love judy and how she survived the "red channel" communist witch hunt.
Can't believe she inspired harley quinn's voice
Wow I did t know that. Thanks for sharing
She didn't. Harley Quinn was wholly inspired by Arleen Sorkin, her original VA.
@@prod.bysoryu1294 And Arleen drew inspiration from Judy Holliday.
@@Prof_Tickles92 Why do you think that?
The inspiration for Harley Quinn.
