    The present look of the apartment is not for me: too bright, too slick, too shiny and impersonal. It wasn't made to look like that, but I respect the owner's option to do what they want. I would have enjoyed seeing the apartment as Judy Holliday knew it. -- I wonder what it's like to live in a space and be aware that someone famous used to live there, maybe even touching and using the some of the same things you touch and use today. I once read an article about playwright Arthur Miller's daughter Rebecca and she mentioned growing up in the house where her father and Marilyn Monroe lived during their marriage. Rebecca Miller (now married to Daniel Day-Lewis) said that it was like having a ghost in the house. Of course many homes have been lived in by many people, famous or unknown.

    Though a lot of the decor featured in the clips of the 2016 remodel are a bit much, I have to admit I like the white treatment of the original stained wood work. I just like the bright feel of it and the other rooms' bold color schemes. I imagine the construction of the big white brick monster behind The Dakota must have been awfully disappointing to Holiday and other occupants of apartments whose views to the west, presumably over town houses, were ruined. I very much enjoyed learning about Holiday's life from the Wikipedia article on her. Thanks for reminding us that she had an interesting story.

    • @NewYawker-777
      @NewYawker-777 6 місяців тому +2

      Just wanted to add - in a coop you don't actually own the apartment. You own shares in the building. So your part of the building's overall taxes are based on the size of your apartment.

    The various color schemes used in the “renovation” of this apartment, as shown in the video, range all the way from gloriously restored to garishly destroyed. The blue room is a perfect example of color used to create a striking, trendy note, but instead results in a grotesque abomination of the spectacular woodwork and plaster beneath. I like this UA-cam channel very much, but unfortunately there was nothing the moderator could do to “un-do” this shocking remuddling.

    No question that the Dakota is an architectural jewel, but the 2016 interior design is an absolute disaster. The only room that was appropriately designed and has taste is the one bathroom that was shown. All the other rooms are tacky to say the least. Way to much white paint in the kitchen. Whoever painted that fireplace white is a moron. Fine woods like walnut, oak, and mahogany should be stained, never, ever, painted. Especially in an historical building like the Dakota. I've said it before and I will say it again, if you want a modern, more contemporary design, then purchase an apartment in a more modern building. There are hundreds of them in New York City. Judy Holliday would be turning in her grave if she saw what had been done to her once elegant apartment.

    It's such a shame the older design was horribly done. There wasn't one redeemable color concept, where with all that expensive natural OLD wood should have played the most important first element in the theme building concept or story board. The new designer took the easy way out by just treating the woodwork like cheap plastic mouldings from Home Despot. In general, i like the new room designs a lot. The only weak "ball drop" was the "elegant living room" which looked anemic and misplaced. That too-little reclining nude art piece above the sofa sums up the entire room. The designer did not know what to do and was clearly out of her element, It looks great at the 7 feet mark... and up !

    I love the high-gloss lacquered walls and white trim. I prefer this interior design over its 2010 interior which looked dark and gloomy. At the time it must have seemed sacrilegious to paint over the original wood trim but the apartment looks so much better with the stained white floors and high-gloss white trim and details. I would not change one thing about this latest incarnation. Everything about the apartment is perfect. The designer showed real mastery. At night the apartment must shimmer with all those high-gloss reflective surfaces.
