Condolences to the family and crew.
What interests me is that these accidents are always found post occurrence. Places where I worked (on land) anything electrical was done by a team of two or within direct line of sight of others working in the same space.
Thank You for saying team of two. [even] Not knowing Engineer's goal, surprised no lock out tag out for his solo attempt. Sad either way.
That also was my feeling in my comment above
@@kareno8634 I was wondering if OSHA General Industry Standards apply to this work. I assume that they would.
A tragedy for Mr Temme family and colleagues i wish the family and his colleagues my deepest sympathy on their loss.
I hope the investigation will find out what happened and action will be taken.
Thank you eSysman, for your report and for corrections of Mr Temme name.
God bless ❤
Thanks for the update 👍
Wonderful job and thank you for your hard work 💪
Very sorry for the loss of a father and hubby. My love and prayers are with them.
I was just down in English Harbor in Antigua. BR was there, though I couldn't get close. I also saw the Maltese Falcon and Alfa Nero. I actually got to see MF steam away. There is a super catamaran in Nelson's Dock named Hemisphere. It was the single craziest man made thing I've ever seen. It's size and scale absolutely blew my mind. Antigua is boating heaven if you ever get the opportunity to go, take it.
Speaking about Alfa Nero, a lot of the Antiguans I spoke to really wanted to get her out of there. Some expressed actually being fearful of Russians/Russian owners.
Thanks
I was in the US Navy and witnessed a second class petty officer get a severe high voltage electric shock. He had not followed the required steps to safely work on an electric panel on a machine. I found this out by attending a safety review and found out that all of the proper steps were documented in the equipment maintenance booklet for that equipment. He never fully discharged the system, just shutting off the main power still left power in capacitors and other back up power systems.
That 2nd class petty officer damn near lost his life due to his not following established protocol. The straight bladed screwdriver he was using was solid welded to the bus board and that whole block had to get replaced due to flash and heat damage
we have capacitors on each motor in our pool room. you can get a nasty shock from a capacitor the size of your thumbnail if you don't wait for it to natually discharge, but these starter motor sized capacitors I'd would NOT survive a shock. and with all that metal around as a ground, you being the rod it's not ending well. Hopefully it was just time to go for him. It sounds like he'd be very aware and even know the amps he was dealing with.
@@user-zp7jp1vk2i this was either the dive motor capacitor (Big) or the dryer element starter ( Bigger amp). He was in a narrow passageway and bounced like a ping pong ball between the wall and the machine. I called out for assistance and started CPR procedures. Luckily he came around fairly quickly.
I learned a HUGE lesson by this, I was just an airmen at that time not even a petty officer. To this day ( thankfully) I've not had this kind of shock, I have learned to not just trust the "book" but always check for voltage with a proper meter not a death stick tester.
@@user-zp7jp1vk2i So true. Data mag drop machines back in the day, each storage rack had several internal caps, the size of very large 'Fosters' cans.. During maintenance, the metal covers and protocols were respected.. Very much;]
I've got your rain up here in Maine, US, for the Panama Canal. All of it. Enough rain every week to fill it. We've had monsoons of rain flooding the state for two years. Come and take it, please!
Heavy rain here - climate change; little rain here - climate change; heavy rain there - climate change; little rain there - climate change; hot summer here - climate change; cold summer here - climate change; hot summer there - climate change; cold summer there - climate change; ....... need I continue? EVERYTHING is proof of climate change! How can any reasonable person argue against it? Best to put all naysayers in jail! Real science in action!
Interesting to know some about the Panama Canal situation. Thanks Mr. Sysman! Woill check if there is a documentary about this Situation.
Very sorry about Mr. Temme. Anyone remember Jeremy in the Club de Mar Palma in the late 70's. For him I believe it was high voltage DC . AC or DC electricity is dangerous stuff.
Panama - its like teaching schoolchildren. You had to repeat exactly what you told us in the previous post because some sad cases listening lack the ability to take it in first time around. Note to them, just keep repeating the video, you'll get it sooner or later.
Possible confined space ( lack of O2) it only takes a couple of breaths. You would not even know.
😭 - So sad.
what a wonderful explanation on 'panama' - this is why you channel is special!!!!!
Could have become an unsafe air environment.
Surprised engineer or crew are allowed to work in engine room solo.
Daft statement. What do you do in smaller yachts that only have 1 engineer? It's quite safe if the equipment is not faulty and/or procedures are followed. That is why they are trained in the first place.
Daft? Engineer working a power outage on a 205’ super yacht with crew of 18 can’t find anyone or doesn’t need someone to spot him? I guess we disagree.
06:50 Gatun Lake and the Panma Canal are 85 feet, not 85 metres above sea level :)
83 feet not meters is the height of lake Gatun
Yes, 26 metres in fact. Just goes to show how people just accept any numbers that are given to them.
Regarding the Chief Engineer situation, the only thing I can think of that could possibly be the cause of death would be electrical. Other than that, one could only assume it was natural causes.
Your lack of understanding does not change the complexities of the world around you. I can think of several possibilities... But one of us knows to keep our trap shut because speculation means fck all.

8:02 Eh.....who is "being held against her will?"
More than likely a wave damper !!
I doubt it.
That's a possibility.
One thing that is apparent, if the engineer didn't accidentally touch something to cause his own death, is that elecrticity was able to get somewhere it shouldn't have been, and when the engineer touched what was electrified that shouldn't have been... ZAP!
What about a heart attack?
Elecrticity would not do that, it only goes where it is supposed to go.
@@deltalima6703you obviously don't know too much about electricity, you can't even spell it....
@reiders100
Lol, you noticed. I was poking fun at the OP. I am an electrician.
@@deltalima6703 If someone gets electrocuted and dies, either they touched something they shouldn't have, or something (lose wire, etc.) caused electricity to travel where it shouldn't have. You didn't pick that up and what, assumed I thought electricity has a brain and goes where it pleases? DUH...
We can and SHOULD pass blame. That is a man-made object. The only variables which could link to his death, unless natural, are from people messing up somewhere. There is no such thing as an accident, there is *ALWAYS* something or someone to blame.
You don't know many details of what happened, so passing blame is a fools errand. And it's offensive to the family & friends of a man who just died.
@@eSysmanSuperYachts Lessons can be learned from deaths. Those lessons can save the lives of others. When the cause of a death is not forthcoming, people will speculate. The speculation that I've read in the comments has already served as a reminder to me to exercise extreme caution when doing electrical work.
So what is the end game for Phi. Hoping the owner and his counsel take the case to the Supreme Court.
You would think that when the canal was widened they would have installed pumps that would draw water from the oceans. They have already run into this same situation several times. Especially when it's a major source of income. Shortsighted really, the additional costs would have been recouped by the increased traffic flow.
Have you seen the video's on the canal, and how it was made? There is a recent video discussing this very matter.
The lake also serves as the fresh water supply for the surrounding cities. They do pump salt water back up the lower locks, but not up to the lake.
Are you serious? Pumping salt water into a fresh water lake that feeds a town and has a fresh water ecosystem, you’d cause a catastrophe!
So about those UK investigators. They were not in international waters, clearly when a vessel is in international waters the flag of the vessel dictates jurisdiction. However it wasn't in international waters, so why is the boat under UK jurisdiction?
It's not their jurisdiction, but they will still be involved as the yacht is a UK flagged vessel. When a US aircraft crashes in France, the US NTSB still gets involved in the investigation.
As an electrician I want to know what happened to the engineer.
I am an electrician too. I used to be an engineer. In my other trade I install and repair fire dampers too. I want to know even more.
I can think of several ways to kill yourself with one, but I have never heard of it happening before.
Dampers are normally 24v ?
@jimwoods9551 usually, yes. Sometimes they are 120v. Difficult to electrocute yourself with that as a tradesman, normally its do it yourselfers that get killed by 120v, but obviously it is possible.
as SOME scientist say because of climate change.... the climate has always been changing.... nobody disputes that...
its the normal way ... and not my fault
Panama Cnal: Why are the operators not installing pumps to bring water from the sea to increase water levels in the Canal? Solar and wind-powered pumps are commonplace in many places around the World and Panama wants to still be considered as the main transport route, right? Surely they are installing the `appropriate tech` to ensure the level is restored? They've made BILLIONS from that Canal...The alternative is to abandon the Canal as `yesterdays news` and put ever larger sailing, sail-assisted and low-carbon vessels to go around the canal, forcing them to build a bigger `ditch` for ships to migrate from east to west. Which will sadly cost much of the billions they've made from the Panama Canal... Oh well.
The lake also serves as the fresh water supply for the surrounding cities. They do pump salt water back up the lower locks, but not up to the lake.
@@jeffv.1743 So a desalination plant is beyond their capabilities? Suggest the fleet operators using the canal reckon on stopping using it ASAP.
Least thought through comment of the week. It is a freshwater lake, salt water would kill the ecosystem thriving within it, not to mention the water is used for humans living all around it.
@@simonevans8979desalination? Are you aware of the energy requirements of a massive scale desalination plant to refill a lake? Desalination plants usually have their own power stations! Then you have to dispose of the super saline water. The costs would make each journey through the canal so expensive that NO ship could afford to use it.

Until there are comprehensive records of the Climate change of Seasons during the Galactic Year, one shouldn't stress about the variations of climate. Geologic records indicate there is nothing out of the norm for changes in climate. The last authoritative studies that I have seen showed our current temp average is some 5 degrees C. below the mean.

It happens faster in the last 100 years than it did in the past. The only reason people are concerned about the global warming that happens NOW is because in previous times there were no or far less people on this planet and no or far less human suffering from it.

Thus the reason why the Chinese are cutting through Nicaragua.
As much as they charge to Transit the Panama Canal they can afford to pump water into the man made lake. After all it's man made. Large ships pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to pass through. A total RIP off. They rely on the fact that it still may be cheaper than the fuel used to go around. The U.S. should've never turned over control of the canal to the Panamanians. Big mistake!!!
They recently increased the amount and size of the locks and now there's not enough natural water to operate them, what a supprise! ... Greed as usual and blaming nature...
Panama runs the canals as a business and source of income for Panama. The size of container ships have increased and modifications to the locks cost money. If there are fewer ships of course the canal would raise fees or surcharges. The US has placed sanctions on interests close to the Chinese Nicaraguan Project basically stopping it. If there is no competition then Panama will charge what shipping companies will pay as they have a virtual monopoly for certain products that most be delivered by a certain deadline.
Probably need to redefine….
Greed
Nature
Monopoly
Since the canal isn’t natural…. We can’t blame nature for it not running efficiently…. Kinda like blaming your right hand when your left hand isn’t working…
Greed…. The canal is a local business run by the state… all states are greedy?
Monopoly… there are alternatives to going through the canal… they just take longer, and burn more fuel…
If you want your voice to be heard… boycott the people that send your stuff through the canal…
Probably need to book a trip to China to do that…. 😃
The new locks reuse more water than the old ones so no, it is not greed as usual. Better engineering than the Americans included in the first locks. Maybe watch eSysman's previous video on the topic or read an article or two.
@@AC-jk8wq I meant greed of the consumer! import less rubbish make stuff local or cut right down..
You realize rainfall is measured and documented... But facts never were your thing...
I hope eSysman follows his own advice and avoids speculation when reporting future incidents. This incident was first reported as an engineer being killed, speculating that the death was not by natural causes. Then it was reported as a fatal accident, again speculating that the death was a result of an occupational accident rather than natural causes. Getting the basic facts like the deceased name wrong and the timing of the events most probably caused great distress to family and friends.
Verify the facts and report the facts. If you're going to give an opinion say so, so your viewers can distinguish between fact and speculation.
Not to mention the Panama Canal has just miraculously risen in height from 26m to 85m.
relying on rain water to refill the lake is just lazy. The lake is used by lots of tourists and money should have used to make sure this didnt occur.
Well it's worked fine for 100 years.
So, all they have to do is wait for sea levels to rise 850 feet, and the Panama Canal problems are solved! Yeah, that'd be a disaster for everyone else, but you can't make an omelette without eggs, or however that expression goes. .... Don't yell at me, please! I'm just joking.
Actually 26 metres. He was wrong about its height above sea level.

Climate change isn’t causing the drop. The impact on gatun water level was warned when China built the lockes. All weather is cyclical and Panama is no different. You’ll see plans for a new canal in the future
Armchair experts at it again with their science denial.
True that Panama’s current situation is being influenced by El Niño, but that’s not new. 1968 saw a heavy drought. So much so, the Canal brought down the Sturgis nuclear power plant. This reduced the need for hydro power.
As for China building the expansion, nope. That was GUPC. Spanish, Belgium, and Panamanian consortium.
China holds leases on port facilities on either end as do other entities.
China doesn’t own the Canal, in case anyone brings that up.
The Canal is gravity fed. Water from the watershed flows out either end. The new locks are designed to reuse some of that water.
Seawater would destroy the watershed and we get our freshwater supply from it. No, desalination is not a viable option with current technology. Cost prohibitive. However, higher heat producing molten salt reactors make that a realistic possibility. Probable? Jury is out on that.

Climate Change is THE catchword for everything pertaining to weather these days. We used to call it simply "weather". There were years with drought and years with floods. Weather is not static. Get over it and stop your woke attitude (to whom it may concern).
Harder to collect money and wield power when it's just the weather being weather though.
