Development of Donkey Kong Racing was cancelled when Nintendo turned down the opportunity to purchase its remaining 51 percent stake in Rare, and the developer was bought out by Microsoft for £375M in 2002.

I lost my dad a week today. So many happy memories playing DKR with him when I was little. I got the game for Christmas one year on N64, my first ever video game. I remember one night hearing the music when I was in bed, creeping downstairs and he was sat playing it. He pretended he hadn't noticed me for a while but then he laughed and said "Well you may as well come down for a bit" He let me stay up late and play for a little while. Will always cherish those memories 💜

Gotta be honest, my first introduction to Diddy Kong Racing was the remake on Nintendo DS. Heck, I didn’t even know there was a version on N64. As for the DS version, I thought it was alright, but nothing too special. I do remember the intro animation being a bit lame though. It was literally just 3 of the characters flying toward the camera, and the angle never changes. So imagine how blown away I was when I booted up the N64 version for the first time! Like, holy crap! This version is a huge step up! It’s not as good as other game intros, but it’s a heck of a lot better than the DS version!

This game was the only version to release in Japan. The remake on DS didn’t release there. But the inverse happened with Conker’s own game (BFD & L&R) And none of Banjo’s games released after the Microsoft buyout have released in Japan (unsure about Nuts & Bolts). So this is technically the only time Japan has witnessed the characters introduced here. Makes you think about it, huh?

One of my favorite things was that in the title screen the intro changed its theme depending on what character you had selected which was honestly really cool. I wonder if any of these other characters will ever be reintroduced in some way (aside from Conker and Banjo)
After 20 years I still say it: Diddy Kong Racing was much better than Mario Kart 64. Diddy Kong Racing had an adventure mode, battle mode and racing mode, there were more vehicles, levels and characters. Mario Kart 64 only had a racing mode, a vs mode and a battle mode. Both games are great and gave me a lot of fun in my childhood, but I can't understand why some people still say that Mario Kart 64 was better. Timber was always my favorite character :D

i always played with pipsy ^^. Games like these were so hard to beat. Well i remember how i always wanted to unlock the chicken (cant remember his name) because i thought he must be op if its an unlockable character but i didnt know how to unlock him. One day i started the game and i did silly airplane tricks and crashed with the wall. Then i heared that crowing frog and i drove over him xD unlocked chicken^^

Probably because it was an early game on the console on a smaller catridge (I think) and they didn't know how to program well for it

I give this game and all my other Nintendo 64 games and Nintendo Wii games to my little sister when she went to college a few years ago and she still has them all

i always played with pipsy ^^. Games like these were so hard to beat. Well i remember how i always wanted to unlock the chicken (cant remember his name) because i thought he must be op if its an unlockable character but i didnt know how to unlock him. One day i started the game and i did silly airplane tricks and crashed with the wall. Then i heared that crowing frog and i drove over him xD unlocked chicken^^
