Basically, the boss has some "global attacks" that requires time for casting and can be cancelled by destroying the casting targets. Discovering the casting targets is mostly trial and error.
On his first global attack, Last Betrayal, you guessed right: the target was the blue enemies he spawned.
But on the second global attack, Frozen Hate, the target was his bracelets. Since they weren't destroyed before casting, the global attack happened.
Only the sword, who can block and generate overshield, has a tiny chance to survive an global attack.
Tip: When you die to a global attack, you unlock it's entry on Virgil's compendium. There, you can see what is the casting target.
I have to rewatch to see that, That will be difficult for most player without any kind of indicator though

Watching everyone wipe to a raidwide mechanic (be it an intentional kill screen or not) is such a classic MMO experience.
If the devs can continue to prove that it's a polished game worth playing, then I think this could be a real gem for those that want this sort of experience.
Speaking of MMOs, Dan, what is your favorite or most memorable raid or who is your favorite or most memorable raidboss from WoW?
Hard to compete with Lich King, spent many hours wiping. I think I only ever beat the raid on 10 man but it's hard to remember now. That stupid train guy from uhh Warlords of Draenor? stands out too for some reason.
The boss from Grimrail Depot where you board the train and fight your way through it?
I remember playing alpha. We on discord and the boss has tons of hp bar. Never got to finish it but we came pretty close lack of damage, you really need people to survive. Pretty nice community.

Watched through 17 minutes getting more and more excited to try it. Until you said it's an epic store exclusive for now Sadge. I get them putting it on there for a quick sum of money but I despise the way Epic runs that store. I'll wait for it to come to steam or not play it

Last time I tried to use epic store it wouldn't allow controller support. Which made a lot of games unplayable for me
