The shot of the painted dinner plate is just heartbreaking. It really gets to me, the idea of Bruno, isolating himself from his family, desperately trying to stay close and part of them while not feeling worthy of joining them. Listening to each meal's conversation. It's so sad.

Bruno and Mirabel are really similar to each other: They're the black sheep of the family, they were unfairly blamed, mistreated by everyone (Bruno because of his gift and Mirabel because she wasn't given a gift), and they both love their family and want to prove that they are worthy

I honestly felt emotional from this scene. Bruno and Mirabel made a connection emotionally. They both feel been blamed for no reason, treated unfairly, and accused they did not commit. I just can't believe Alma would do something harsh to them like that. All that mount of pressure drove Bruno away after he saw Mirabel's future, he doesn't want his niece to suffer the same fate as he did.

Can we appreciate for a moment everything Bruno sacrificed to protect Mirabel? He isolated himself from everyone for 10 years because he knew the pain of being shunned and misunderstood by those you love most and he never wanted a member of his own family whom he loved and cared about to go through the same pain he did. In my opinion, Bruno has to be one of the most selfless, wholesome and lovable characters in cinematic history🥰

    • @Furienna

That said, I believe that making that prophecy about Mirabel only was the last straw for Bruno.
It is clear that people hated him and/or feared him, and it has been confirmed by Jared Bush that he kept to himself a lot even before he went into hiding.
Yeah, it is true that what Bruno did for his little niece was impressive.
But I feel that if he hadn't been very lonely and unhappy already before he "disappeared", he would have made other choices and not gone into hiding.

It's funny how at first, Mirabel's clearly just thinking, "What is WITH this weirdo???" but it doesn't take long for her to warm up to him once she realizes why he is the way he is. They probably spend 15-20 minutes together tops over the course of the movie, but they build such a powerful connection during that short time. The fact that Bruno was the black sheep of the family and gave up EVERYTHING to try and protect his niece from suffering in the same way is epic. And yet through it all, he still loved his family and longed to stay close to them.

The sadness hit me in seconds. It hit me because it was personal. It was a HUGE slap in the face. You ever see a movie that made you feel really called out? That's what this scene did to me and it had me connect to Bruno more than any other Disney character. I really empathized with him in that moment. He went from "Yeah, he's endearing. But, he'll reveal himself to be the villain at any moment" to "Oh my God! He loves his family so much, but he wants to stay away because he feels like a burden!" Try to understand: ✳what does a prophet do in this cultural setting?✳
He or she TALKS! And often talks too MUCH. ‼‼‼
Poor Bruno means very little harm, but sets forces in motion with his remarks which he should never have touched with a thirty-foot pole. Pepa's weather-making powers at the wedding, for instance. Not to mention all the community-political forces around his [unjust] "black-sheep" status.
This holds true whether he's sharing a supernal vision or just some mundane observation. And his utterly benign underlying motives do nothing to lessen the pain of the consequences.

For example, when she was singing with Isabella in “what else can I do”, the candle burns brighter as she feels genuinely accepted by her sister. And when she finally confronts Abuela Alma with her “I’ll never be good enough for you” moment, that’s when Casita literally falls apart. In fact Mirabel only noticed the cracks just moments after she finishes her song where she admits she’s not fine.

Somehow, she found it easier to be angry with him for leaving the family than admitting how hurt she was by it.
Camilo was only a mischievous theater kid, who seemed to treat the whole thing as an opportunity to act like the villain in a play.

    “But..I love my family, y’know..”
That scene broke my heart, Bruno deeply cared for his family despite them fearing him and his power. Instead of trying to help him and understand him, they basically shunned him and went along with how the town thought of him. They even tried to sweep his existence under the rug and pretend he isn’t real, especially his family. Bruno reminds me of my 2nd oldest sister, she was mistreated by mother and thanks to her, my sister now has depression and ADHD, went undiagnosed with it until now. That’s why I can connect with Mirabel and Bruno (I’m currently kinda in a Mirabel/Isabela situation) a lot. Really hated how everyone didn’t owe Bruno an apology that he deserved at the end

In real life its not just opening up once and everything is fine with trauma, more people know that better than me. However, I loved this movie because there was no 'villain' like a typical movie. No one out for revenge or to take over the world because they were burned. It was about very human flaws, and very real life despite to protect your family. It's far from a cure, but it's moments like Abuela opening up to Mirabel that OPENS the cure, that lets you face the trauma head on and learn to heal. It's strength and patience like Mirabel's to help guide that healing. Trauma hurts you, its hurts people you care about through you, but they can be the reason it doesn't hurt so much anymore. The reason you regain hope and have faith to keep going. Sometimes, it takes being confronted with hurting someone you love to realize just have far you've fallen, how wrong you are. I have no doubt Abuela loved Mirabel too, but her fear for her family and not wanting the miracle to force made her keep mirabel at arms length, made her expect perfection from her family so there was no flaws to fail. The thing about life and trauma, is you NEED to break, you need to let yourself feel what you're feeling, you need to let yourself be not okay. In order to put the pieces back together in something better. Not great, not perfect, not flawless, but beautiful anyway. Mirabel's gift is to be the candle bearer like Alma, so as her doubts and pain grew, the house cracks showed more and more like trauma when someone tries to repress it. You crack and crack and crack, until everything falls apart. Life is the story you tell through your memories, everything good and everything that hurts, and everything in between.

But I'm tempted to see it as a poke at those viewers, especially those D@M#d PTO types, who insist on what younger people in Germany once called the Hollywood Happyend. The sheer implausibility of everybody effectively just singing Kumbaya as if 45 years of strange happenings and emotional violence had never taken place is such a loud insult that I wonder if a couple of screenwriters meant it as a signal to ask a few questions. Didn't want us to take it at face value, IOW.

    1. The lady with the fish: probably was neglecting her pet already.
    2. The fat guy: emotional eater
    3. The priest: stress and aging.
    It was all self-inflicted
Mirabel's vision: was showing what Mirabel's gift was all along as well as her destiny. She wasn't just the solution, she was the gift all along.

He's painted in a horrible light not because people are angry with him, but because they are of him. And that's not especially because he's a practical threat to them, either. It's about his magical power and how it and he have grown together to form something very, very different from everyday humanity. In another scene, the whole village watches little Antonio understand what animals are saying. 45 or so years earlier, the village watched another small boy bend Time and Space and do strange things with the fabric of the world in order to ply them with a piece of bad news...
That dreadfully sad look in his eyes when Mirabel poses the pertinent question is really everyone else's terror, reflected in its unlucky target.
And this is why he breaks our hearts. He has all the needs, and all the moral entitlements, but he still only ^*half-belongs*^ anywhere on this plane of existence.

Casita must've helped him in some ways, expanding her walls so he could hide, sneaking him plates and things, stuff like that. Dunno how he got that big armchair in there though... Also does anyone else see the drawing on the wall in the background at 0:26? Can't tell what it is but it's so sweet yet sad to think of Bruno drawing a picture of his family or something because he's lonely. Also damn where did he get all those books from? Dude is well-read AND good at parkour? Why hasn't anyone married him yet?!

Yeah, even though no one in the movie talks about it, it is clear that Bruno is well-read, with all those books in his room.
And he's also artistic and creative and good with animals and just adorably awkward in the cutest possible way and simply a true sweetheart.
Really, it is like they just added detail after detail to make him even more lovely and amazing and wonderful to me.
It is like they knew me personally and created him with the sole purpose of making me develope a crush on a fictional character.
Except I know that I'm not Bruno's only fangirl, so it worked for many other people as well.
He wouldn't have had any problems with finding someone who would marry him if we could meet him. 😅
But alas, people in-universe had almost no chance to get to know him before the Casita crumbled and the magic disappeared.
Thus, he had to remain single due to his introverted and nervous personality and the awful rumors about him... ☹️

@@lilac3266 Yes, but there is one important difference between Bruno and Mirabel: their personalities.

Mirabel still managed to be bubbly and upbeat most of the time and was liked by everybody except Abuela and Isabela, who were of course dealing with their own issues.
And as soon as things started to go really wrong, she had the pluck and optimism to try to do something about it.
Bruno was much less of a sociable person than Mirabel and had a hard time letting people get to know him before they shunned him.

Mirabel also wasn’t liked by everybody we quite literally see 90% of ppl forget or ignore her excluding her parents and Antonio. The townspeople also aren’t fond of her as revealed by the gut guy. My point is we shouldn’t say one had it worse because they have very different experiences. We don’t know how long bruno has felt this way and we do know that mirabel has felt it for her entire childhood. This movie really is a genuine masterpiece, and proof that in spite of what a lot of Disney haters want to believe, Disney has made some genuine masterpieces in recent years. But if there's one problem I have with the movie, it's that most scenes in the second half honestly go on for longer than needed. With scenes like this, then the scene where Bruno has the next vision, the flashback by the river, and the All of You scene. To the point where the song We Don't Talk About Bruno, which you'd assume is right before the last third of the movie, is actually just barely into the second half of the movie. Again, this is still a masterpiece, but this is one thing that bothers me about the movie.

Like just how much stress she had to handle for having that oversensitive hearing, how she exposed tons of things (because she's had wayyy too much to contain them). The guilt for exposing Mirabel and those visions. Just how much this family endured, it's too much.
