Gigadweeb I would love to pick up one of the famicom, green, or blue ones but the prices have skyrocketed. I'll just have to hold onto the two I have right now.
sjm4306, my cousin had the exact same problem with his Micro as well. When I fixed it, he asked me if I had gotten a new one, as I had replaced the faceplate as well as a small gift. Thanks man!
Cheesus Crust, don't know why everyone is so ocd about this. This was a repair video that focused only on the repair. Just because I didn't show the cleaning doesn't mean I hadn't done it after the camera wasn't rolling.
Any idea where I may be able to get my hands on a screen replacement ? I broke mine when I was 10 years old and none of the stores near me had the replacement screen. Now I'm an Electronics Engineer and would love to fix it and get back to that unfinished game of Super Mario Bros 3.
sjm4306 ohh I wish it were that simple. I live in India and travel quite often to Dubai. Sadly eBay won't ship to either of those places. I probably need to find someone who can carry a package from the US to me.
thank you for this very thorough and detailed video of you explaining how to replace the screen, i was able to replace the screen with no problems except for me thinking i was going to break those clips "they really are easy to open but they can take a little more force then youd think" now i can enjoy my micro again on my breaks!
I need your help - the black tab where you plug in the back light broke off and now it won't stick - I read you were saying you can solder it but I was wondering do you just use regular solder or do I need a specific kind? Also do you think tape would really work? Thanks.
I used a fine tip on a plastic spudger to pop out my faceplate, I recently dig out my micro and I had to clean under the face plate it was really gross lol. I wish I could get a replacement 20th anniversary face plate because mine is very scratched
Thanks for the vid, helped me greatly when replacing the LCD for the micro(it had yellow tint, not entirely deal breaking but it bugged me). I think I watched a shell replacement video for the sp. The only issue I had was unresponsive buttons, but I fixed that. My power button does feel loose compared to my stock micro, not sure how I can fix that however. Maybe when if I'm putting back the metal faceplate with the power button on the on position?
Very carefully measure the voltage of zif connector pins for the backlight to make sure the constant current driver isn't fried. 9/10 though it's a connection problem.
man that beep scared the living hell out of me I know I took my fire alarm down becuse we need a new one. But yeah going to watch some videos I may have missed.
I had that problem before on my Anniversary Famicom Edition Game Boy micro. When opening my Game Boy micro; I accidentally tore a ribbon cable while taking the guts out of the shell. The guts of my Game Boy micro were in much worse shape than I had previously known, so things we're sticking that shouldn't have been and it was all too easy to make it worse. Thankfully, it didn't matter in the slightest; since the screen I was going to replace the one in my Game Boy micro with was going to come from another Game Boy micro I had that was a more standard model. Since the guts of my Anniversary Famicom Edition Game Boy micro were in such shabby condition; I just threw them out and put the guts from the other Game Boy micro I had into the Anniversary Famicom Edition shell. The guts from the other Game Boy micro were in much better condition.
Hi there, I am desperately searching for an answer, but can't find it anywhere, so I try my luck here. Maybe you know it. It looks like a fuse in my GBM blew. It's pretty much impossible to decode tiny smd markings unless you already know roughly what series you are looking for. Your best bet is likely something around 200mA-500mA if it is just for something like the backlight or ~1A if it is in the switching regulator or charging circuity as I cant imagine anything inside the micro sucking more than that anyway.
i hv encounter some problem that when GBM was plugged into the charger, it showing a blue lights (not blinking), i even change the batteries, but its still wont turn on? any solution?
hey, my gameboy micro's casing is a little open on the botton left corner (near power switch) What kind of screwdriver do i need to tighten it? it seems to be different from the tri wings on the right side and the ones i ordered online dont fit

My gameboy micro has some blue colors in the corners of the screen when displays black in some games, do I need to replace the screen for a new one? or just is common in this screen?
One of mine has a little "light bleed" at the corners (looks like a tiny bit of whitish light at certain angles near the edges). This is normal for low/mid quality lcds but if it is very distracting then something is off and you'll likely need a new lcd.
I have a gameboy micro that would not turn on at all I’ve replaced the battery and when I turn it on the screen now won’t work The lights at the bottom work but no screen Would this need a screen replacement? Or are there any other problems that could cause this?
If you shine a flashlight at an angle on the lcd can you see an image? It could be the led backlight died, or the ribbon needs to be reseated. Worst case though is the screen somehow died and needs to be replaced.
cybermax12 I haven't been able find find replacements as it's a much smaller version the standard tact switch used in the gba and sp. I'd advise using fine tweezers to very carefully remove the rubber dome and a can of compressed air to clean the inside. Replace the rubber dome insert and test. Unfortunately that's the best you can do.
a nice sharp screwdriver and firm downward force while slowly turning for mildly stripped screws, for very stripped screws you basically have to use a special screw extractor bit or failing that drill out the head and use pliers to pull out the remaining thread.
Hey sjm, is it safe if I fix my broken micro by my self watching UA-cam videos/tutorials?? Because I don’t have any clue of what your doing in the video
Would I be able to send u my GBM to fix? Do u offer that type of service? The L button on it is unresponsive and u have to push it extra hard to get it to work.
Jamie Ryan Thanks Jamie. I've had my eye on doing a color 101 for awhile, just gotta find the time (and save some funds to purchase the required parts).
I would like your opinion on me buying a game boy. There are two for sale in my are a pikachu edition game boy advanced sp with some scratches then there's a game boy advanced sp red with the box and original paperwork and charger and Pokémon red they are the same price which should I get
If the pikachu sp is a legit original (not a Chinese reshell) then I'd say depending on price that would be a good investment. However if you care more about playing than collecting the cib red sp with the game would be nice to have for both display and play. If you really can't decide ask yourself: in five years what would I regret not getting more? I had a chance to get a $30 mint nes sp years ago and I passed on it and have regretted it to this day. Luckily I did end up getting one recently but it cost me more and is in worse condition. So lesson learned.
Kyle Swehla I would no longer consider it a real limited edition once you replace the plastic shell. The image isn't a sticker, but rather printed directly on the plastic so you could only replace the entire plastic as a whole.
sjm4306 I'm not 100 percent sure what you meant by printed on the shell is of a gameboy that has bad internals but the shell is just fine it still has the little black sticker on the bottom
Kyle Swehla Oh sry I didn't quite understand. Yeah swapping the innards of a broken gameboy and keeping the shell to fix it up is legit in my book (I even encourage it).
As far as I know they only sell replacement plastic screen covers. This is a rare expensive console and the shell is pressed aluminum so my guess is the market is too niche and the process of making a complete replacement shell would be too expensive to be worth the effort.
The Game Boy Advance SP looks way easier to assemble and disassemble compared to this one, I mean, it is practically a jigsaw of many miniature pieces!
It is a bit of a puzzle. Having the metal shell and plastic midframe makes for a more complex assembly but it does feel really nice. It would've been interesting if Nintendo had released a metal gba sp.
Yeah, sadly Nintendo no longer makes metal consoles,I think the last one they produced was the New Nintendo 3DS XL Monster Hunter Tri Special Edition (I saw that console when it came out and called a friend that wanted it, he rushed to the mall as fast as he could, but when he arrived, someone else had already bought it!).
The owner has told me that the screen has developed a single stuck black pixel that he noticed while playing the micro. It could just be bad luck and uncommon or it could be a sign of manufacturing issues for these aftermarket screens. As with all things though there's always some risk when you buy non-oem replacement parts from china.
sjm4306 thanks man! Actually, some technician checked it out earlier. He confirmed that the battery was dead but he also told me the power IC in the board was damaged. Although I dont know if he's right because the previous owner told me they just stopped using it for a very wrong time but everything was working before
It really depends on the condition and price. I usually search for low priced units with specific faults that I know have a high chance of successful repair so I can get the most bang for my buck.
Most of them are missing hinges, the speakers work, the shells and screens are scratched. And maybe a few missing buttons. And the price is at $20.50 right now I believe.
Hey idk if you’re going to read this but if you do would it be possible to fix my ps3 I tried to fix it but I’m not that good with ps3’s and it has YOLD
UA-camr 59356 I read just about every comment I receive so no worries. Fixing your ps3 will likely require reflowing the cpu and gpu with a hot air gun or oven for a temporary or reballing it for a long term fix.
It'd probaby be fine if it were mine to risk, I just dont want to risk a customer's property in the case it is confiscated as I'd have to pay to replace it.
I found another lot. Sorry if this ends up annoying you. I figured since I don't do much with my life, I might as well point out some broken game system being sold on eBay for you to possibly get. Tell me if you don't want my help, I won't take it offensively. Here's a lot of 3 broken systems...
The ds has a broken hinge, the gameboy color doesn't have it's volume working correctly, and the gba sp seems to not want to turn on properly and when it does, it takes a long time. Price is at $15.
I don't mind at all. Given I have limited funds and usually concentrate of specific items but taking a look never hurts and if I score a deal then great.
If you were to get the lot, I'd hurry. There's 1 hour left on that auction. But from what I've read, I think you could make a profit. The DS has a broken hinge. You can buy one off eBay for probably about $4. The GBC has a volume problem, probably a malfunctioning speaker, and the SP either has something blocking the connection to the power switch or a bad battery. The seller says that all these items work fine except for those flaws stated. I'm sure you could make a profit from that.
On a personal note to many times of opening and putting it back together the screws will strip the aluminum housing shell ugh oh boy it's a nightmare 🙄 I'm waiting for the next month or so I'm trying to get a hold of a gold Gameboy micro housing shell and with the clear purple buttons oh yeah it's going to be banging 😂
Believe me I would love to just fix gameboys all day for free but just like everyone else I've got bills to pay and I only get a few hours a week to myself outside of work. Every once and awhile I do some pro bono repairs if the problem sounds interesting but I still require the owner to pay for parts and shipping. I cant afford to run a charity unfortunately.
not many were sold and it's arguably the highest build quality console Nintendo ever put out. you just want to hold it. 130 for a micro in good shape will hold its value considering how much love people have for Nintendo. even if it doesn't warrant the price for some people I wouldn't sell mine for less. in fact I would laugh off 130. my advise is to go to ebay because mine is not for sale. I have a feeling I'm not the only person who feels that way about the micro.
It was purchased as an untested ebay buy, been cleaned and put back together, once the charger is plugged in the blue lights on start and select come on for a second then go off.
1103bingo Check any onboard fuses (components labeled F1, F2, etc) using a multimeter in continuity (beep) or resistance mode. Sounds like a fuse might be blown. Or it might be the battery is shot (many of the original micro batteries are on their way out by now).
Thanks for the input, ive bought another battery but yet to see any life in the little treasure, ill perform a continuity test of any fuses i can find. Failing that it will do for spares i suppose.
MegaSegaAJ ! Must be nice. I recently had to import a Pandora battery to revive a psp and you wouldn't believe how difficult it was to find a company willing to ship to me here.
Pretty much everything used that I buy for my collection gets stripped down, non-electronic components get washed in an ultrasonic bath with warm soapy water, and electronic parts get cleaned with isopropyl alcohol before they go back together.
You don't need to pop up a fleeting and annoyingly distracting caption (that nobody can read) each time your smoke alarm chirps because of a low battery. Get it off the ceiling and pull the battery.
A Floyd Interestingly it wasn't the battery, it was the corroded contacts that increased the impedance making the alarm think a good battery was dead. Found that out after plugging in a new battery gave the same beeping.
200 dollars? For that price I hope it was mint and boxed. It does seem that prices are only increasing on micros. I remember just a year or two ago decent condition units were only around $50.
i want mine fixed so bad.. just pure tears seeing that one all fixed up.. i broke my back in middle school and that was years ago... jump to 2023 still broken..

A fuse may have blown. Google where the fuses are located and check them with a multimeter set to continuity.
Do you know how to repair the volume regulator? I have a GBM that can only increase it.
It's highly likely the button is broken or needs cleaning. The digital part that actually controls the volume is very unlikely to break.

Hey idk if you’re going to read this but if you do would it be possible to fix my ps3 I tried to fix it but I’m not that good with ps3’s and it has YOLD
UA-camr 59356 I read just about every comment I receive so no worries. Fixing your ps3 will likely require reflowing the cpu and gpu with a hot air gun or oven for a temporary or reballing it for a long term fix.
sjm4306 thanks I will try that
Very nice video, thank you!!!
Two videos in a day ? :D
PixCub Meant to post one yesterday and one today but life happens so today is a two for one deal!
if the battery is within the device, just don't mention it to usps. its fine, its not out by itself
Here's a lot of 3 broken systems...
m.ebay.com/itm/Gameboy-sp-gameboy-color-ds-for-parts-/182816852282?nav=SEARCH
Can you fix my original gameboy screen totally broken
You'd need to find a gameboy with a working screen but a dead board so we could swap just the lcd.
Wait they have gold micro shells now?!?! Also yes I've seen a few micros with the aluminum thread taping stripped, it's a shame.
Yeah they had gold shells for a while now before they made the Nintendo DS lite clear housing shell
A zelda themed micro would look sick!
Umm imagine the possibility of that being made Like never play with it ever again 😂
Yeah I clear modified the right joy con and the protector shell top part is not seating right on the top of the joy con
How do you send stuff to you?
Anyone can send me an email at sjm4306@gmail.com and let me know what they want to send so I can tell them my address.
yo dude nice intro
SaNdMaN 02665 Thanks
Is it worth pre bending the flex cables replicating the old ones before connecting so screen does not try to pop out?
Good video, but next time mind the screws!
This is just like the game gear i sold except this is smaller
Hmm, very The Backoffice-tastic.
Penurious Sierra Rofl
i stripped one of the screws :(
Poor Mr. Game Boy micro
Pug01 Pokémon and more 2.0 M Don't worry she's all good and healed now!
Yay
u're going too fast for the small connector when u're plugging the new screen we can't really see how u do it it's a shame...
I managed to succeed anyway. Thank you so much for your video it saved me from paying 30€ haha
Nice Vid
Could i send you a gameboy to fix and could you send it back?
Pherrell Mendez I do perform repairs but you would need to describe what problems you are having so I can give you a cost estimate for the repair.
Broke boi
Believe me I would love to just fix gameboys all day for free but just like everyone else I've got bills to pay and I only get a few hours a week to myself outside of work. Every once and awhile I do some pro bono repairs if the problem sounds interesting but I still require the owner to pay for parts and shipping. I cant afford to run a charity unfortunately.
I have dropped my micro so many times it’s broken :/
Oh that sucks, especially since it's so tiny that it's easy to drop.
Bro this was made on my 13th birthday🎂
Jorgamer guY Happy belated birthday!
sjm4306 Thx bro
It was one day away from mine
Jorgamer guY but im a year older😊
U old than me for like 4 months
cool
I got a gba micro for $130
I miss the days when micros were going for under $50 ...
not many were sold and it's arguably the highest build quality console Nintendo ever put out. you just want to hold it.
They'll have to pry my micros from my cold dead hands ...
selling on of mine currently with some minor damage and ppl keep offering way under $100 for it. i just laugh and block
Dobla el cable, colocaste la batería al revés
Works either way, if it were really directional Nintendo would've keyed it so it couldn't be inserted the wrong way.
So i have a micro that i got a little wet, any chance of saving it?
1103bingo It really depends if it were thoroughly dried off afterwards and not powered until it was completely dried.
1103bingo Hopefully it is just the battery and you can resurrect it.
Are you canadian?
Nope, I'm in the US. Why, do I give off a canadian aura?
gba on a chip from nintendo. wow.
I've been replaying the game... You know... Just for fun. What else do you play a game for other than fun?
winnetouch Sometimes I speed run or 100% which is more for my OCD or destressing than it is for fun. Depends on what mood I'm in.
But technically it's still for your enjoyment... AKA fun? :P
winnetouch Yeah I guess that's true
Sorry man... You have your OCDs and I have mine ;). I just like to mess with people :). Love your channel BTW.
where i live they dont give two shits about batterys
MegaSegaAJ ! Must be nice. I recently had to import a Pandora battery to revive a psp and you wouldn't believe how difficult it was to find a company willing to ship to me here.
Damn, clean the damn thing before putting it back toqether!
Cleaned it afterwards off camera as this was just a repair video.
oh good to hear. Watching people put things back together with all the dirt and grime is like yuk! might as well just flush it down the toilet! >_
Pretty much everything used that I buy for my collection gets stripped down, non-electronic components get washed in an ultrasonic bath with warm soapy water, and electronic parts get cleaned with isopropyl alcohol before they go back together.
I love doing that with old PC hardware, restoring the pcbs to brand new if possible :P
I got my micro for 200
200 dollars? For that price I hope it was mint and boxed. It does seem that prices are only increasing on micros. I remember just a year or two ago decent condition units were only around $50.
