Love the micro! I picked up one of the first runs of these aftermarket shells. Some of the paint was a little flaky and the burrs were lethal. Aside from that and the fact they cost a fair bit, pretty viable way to spruce up the pink micro your sister gave you!
Same thing happens with the PSP though. Went through about 6 or so replacement shells before I found one that fits correctly, only for it to then damage the screen and home bar of my unit.
No competition so make it for the lowest price and sell it for the highest price people be like wow this is horrible quality and you'll be like well show me a better one and then they can't and you say well that's what I thought. Edit to fix mistakes
Maybe this will spur someone else on to manufacture these better, but I doubt the Micro has enough traction behind it to compel someone else to get into the case manufacturing game. One can hope!
I will forever feel like such an idiot. Got my Famicom edition Micro when it came out, had it in my pocket one day while trying to run somewhere and tripped on the sidewalk and later noticed it has a small scratch on the outer screen and a worn chip spot on the top of the shell. Probably not a big deal compared to most heavily roughed up systems, but bugs the hell out of me, especially since it was a special edition color and I was trying to keep it in good shape when I got it.
dude i love your videos. i ended up on your channel from recommended and realized i had previously watched many of your other videos. great channel. subscribed
I just bought a micro, and it’s actually in great shape. Everything works, the case and faceplate are in great shape minus a few dings and scratches(the part on the back above the cartridge slot is a bit bent in as well, but it’s hard to notice and doesn’t interfere with games being inserted) all 4 faceplate latches even work fine.
Sad they aren’t better, my local retro store has a couple micros that are pretty beat up but priced well, I’ve been waiting for good reshell options to clean one up. Guess I’ll just wait a bit more!
agreed, i'm glad that you're someone that understands the process and are waiting for improvements. it's a replacement shell, was never intended or advertised as a original manufactured shell at all. millions like me are thankful that at least someone is producing things like this, China is a godsend for people like us because theres not a another area of manufactures that even care, think it's worth the time, or have ever produced anything like these for people like us who are wanting to modify, repair, or just tune up our systems. for china to even see the value in producing replacement items in decades old electronics that literally no one else would take the time to produce, is one thing i'm so grateful for, and remember this is the FIRST attempt at them making these, so they WILL increase in quality and look after a few months, the GB/GBP/ GBC/ GBA and GBA SP all have tons of nice shells in different colors, styles and options thanks to china stepping up to the plate to offer things like this to us, and you can damn well bet they were iffy at first, but after time we now have some pretty damn good replacement shells. It's hard to just produce these things from scratch so it makes sense the first attempt would be kinda off.... just be happy that we even have the option to even do things like this at all dude, it's not a "fake" shell, because it actually functions and works.
DomDiggity I’m definitely glad it exists for people who need/want them now, it’s definitely awesome we even have this ability. I’ve only gotten into this kind of work in the last couple years because I figured I would just have to live with old beaten up systems, but we’re definitely in a good time now where affordable replacements exist at all.
It's a gorgeous system. Retromodding has really good quality replacement faceplates and extra screws if your are interested by the way, it sucks that the new shell didn't come with them. They also sell extra battery covers, but I cannot speak for those, personally as the one on my micro is still serviceable, and they don't seem to sell replacement clips yet either.
Just got my first micro, and I'm sure mines had the some refurb, looking at possible button and shell replacement options. I'm excited to add it to my collection! I really want to get hold of some clear start and select buttons to make those LED's pop.
Every 3rd party battery for the GBA Micro I have seen has the power cable coming out of the wrong side of the battery compared to the original battery. The wires on the original battery come out of the short side, the wires on these Chinese knock-offs come out of the long side. It causes the battery cover to not sit flush, I gave up trying to find a proper replacement and sold my Micro 2 months ago. They sell for an insane amount.
The only problem I had with the micro was when I bought the black model it came with a silver faceplate. I waited years for a decent replacement but now it's solid black. Looks amazing now.
Yes! More Micro videos. There’s not enough modding in the GBM scene... be great if someone brought out 3D printed parts for all the micro plastic parts including buttons which I believe are just silver foiled. I’ve seen replacement shoulder buttons but never Start/Select.

@@Dominicn123 Yes very very glad we have Chinese manufacturers willing to make these replacements. What they need is feedback to improve the molds/models they're using. They also need people buying these a lot more and they will produce more and hopefully refine. One issue I have found with overly popular mods is the price gauging. AGS-101 screens are ludicrously overprice now, they used to be $25USD, now you're looking at over $50+ easily which can really put off modders.
i'll always feel a little regret not picking up as many micros as i could when they were on clearance for $99. it's such an adorable little console and the screen is gorgeous despite being so small
Thanks a lot for reviewing this. I would like to buy one, but its kinda expensive. After watch your video, i might hold for a couple years, i hope there will be a better shell in the future, complete with inner plastic frame and screw

This Micro got a downgrade... Should have just replaced the battery. Micros with a few dents in the shell are cool anyway, it's metal! I have a few REALLY beat up ones that play perfectly, and they're the ones I feel good about stuffing in a coat pocket.
I've bought two replacement faceplates from aliexpress one month ago. They had the same issues like yours with being too large to fit... I was really disappointed. For my luck the original one is still in a good shape.

Hey Collin, does the replacement faceplate have a tint to the screen? I bought a blue faceplate on Amazon and there’s a slight blue tint which throws everything off... for $12!
I hate that 3 of my screws are stripped beyond hell on the micro, notably the tri-wing screws. The shell is in rough shape as well, so I am wanting to replace it entirely for a new look, but yeah I can't deal with these stripped screws. Help! :(
The only thing I would ask about the gameboy micro is if I modify the cartridge slot so it can accept the gameboy color cartridges, will they work or did nintendo discontinue the older gameboy games starting from micro and ds? If we could enable such functionality, the micro would be great not to mention a dislay that can be better than the ags101.
@@FyreWulff So it is just a voltage situation? That means if we can safely increase the voltage to the minimum it takes to run those games would just need to make sure the console can survive the higher V.
Does anyone know where I can buy the LR springs and the start select buttons? I’ve been sitting on a broken micro with a replacement screen for a long while now.
Any replacement gameboy micro parts that I've found have sucked even if they were *newly manufactured* always pre scratched under the plastic peel. I did a silver case swap to deal with the scratches on the front lens I put a screen protector on it and now it's less bothersome/noticable.
Well, I sure hope they improve them. My micro could really use a new shell, and hopefully i can find a replacement face retaining clip, since i have one that's broken too. Granted, I still need to replace the microswitch for my left shoulder button. It's the only GBA in my collection right now, so I've been hurting to play my GBA titles. :(

I really don't get why they dropped gb and gbc support for the micro. It's only strong point was the small built, but it lacked the features of the gba sp or nds. It still launched for a 100$ and the ds was only 50 more, while you got a sp cheaper with more features and a still small form factor.
I just watched a video from a UA-cam channel Esotericsean and he has a new modded shell for the GBC backlight mod... If you can, Colin, do a video on it! The Retro Future has done one too!

Although the faceplate doesn't fit, it's usually the back of the housing that's beat up anyways. Just keep your original faceplate and use the replacement housing for the back of the console. That said I'd say it's quite remarkable! Bummer about the faceplate issue, but quickly forgettable IMO.

30 $ is really pricey 4 the quality it was made of. I tried once replace shell on psp n those shell parts wouldnt fit together n would feel extremely cheap. The back door on umd disk drive wouldnt close n so I rather kept old scratched shell than have none functioning psp. Lesson learnt, dont buy replacement shell for your consoles/handhelds.

Hey Collin, does the replacement faceplate have a tint to the screen? I bought a blue faceplate on Amazon and there’s a slight blue tint which throws everything off... for $12!
It doesn’t have a tint, but it’s definitely not as clear as it should be - there’s a slight haze that causes the image to look a bit soft.
This Does Not Compute does it have a slight red tint?
I want a Micro but I don’t want to pay $200 for it when I have several Advances and SPs
Worth it I got. mine 130 off Ebay the sp is life but I wanted a micro since 2005 an I'm 24 now I got new faceplate an it looks great
ahh the internal plastic clasp to hold on the faceplate is broken on mine - maybe the next revisions can help
Great vid Colin
I hate that 3 of my screws are stripped beyond hell on the micro, notably the tri-wing screws. The shell is in rough shape as well, so I am wanting to replace it entirely for a new look, but yeah I can't deal with these stripped screws. Help! :(
Inexcusable for $30, the better option is to respray with some kind of transparent paint. The same kind used to restore hot wheels cars.
I really wish they came in the normal colors, I just want to get a silver shell, I don't want a blue one!
No. It lacks the proper voltage to run the GB/GBC games (they need 5V, this only has the 3V required for GBA)
WTH are those translucent gameboy buttons?
Any replacement gameboy micro parts that I've found have sucked even if they were *newly manufactured* always pre scratched under the plastic peel. I did a silver case swap to deal with the scratches on the front lens I put a screen protector on it and now it's less bothersome/noticable.
I had one several years ago but back then Faceplates were impossible to find.
I need to buy a GB Micro. The last "western" GameBoy which is missing in my collection
I wait for this kinde of video ! Thx
*Hey, man! Great review! Could you pls tell the name of the music? :)*
Hello Colin, I bought a GBM and the shoulder buttons don't work. Do you have any idea where can I find some replacement ones? Thanks
Beniamin Tucu i had this problem . A little contact cleaner sprayed into the switches will fix it
2021 now, are there better gameboy micro shells?
Greetings from 2021. There are still no other options for aftermarket GB Micro shells.
Where did u get the battery?
Well, I sure hope they improve them. My micro could really use a new shell, and hopefully i can find a replacement face retaining clip, since i have one that's broken too. Granted, I still need to replace the microswitch for my left shoulder button. It's the only GBA in my collection right now, so I've been hurting to play my GBA titles. :(
agreed, i'm glad that you're someone that understands the process and are waiting for improvements. it's a replacement shell, was never intended or advertised as a original manufactured shell at all. millions like me are thankful that at least someone is producing things like this, China is a godsend for people like us because theres not a another area of manufactures that even care, think it's worth the time, or have ever produced anything like these for people like us who are wanting to modify, repair, or just tune up our systems. for china to even see the value in producing replacement items in decades old electronics that literally no one else would take the time to produce, is one thing i'm so grateful for, and remember this is the FIRST attempt at them making these, so they WILL increase in quality and look after a few months, the GB/GBP/ GBC/ GBA and GBA SP all have tons of nice shells in different colors, styles and options thanks to china stepping up to the plate to offer things like this to us, and you can damn well bet they were iffy at first, but after time we now have some pretty damn good replacement shells. I really don't get why they dropped gb and gbc support for the micro. It's only strong point was the small built, but it lacked the features of the gba sp or nds. It still launched for a 100$ and the ds was only 50 more, while you got a sp cheaper with more features and a still small form factor.
yo m8, did you find a place that sells the screws?
I just watched a video from a UA-cam channel Esotericsean and he has a new modded shell for the GBC backlight mod... If you can, Colin, do a video on it!
The Retro Future has done one too!
do you know where i could find an original nintendo ds shell the 1st gen?
Its such a shame that third party replacement faceplates all contain micro scratches on them. That’s the only thing my Micro needs is a new faceplate, that doesn’t come looking used...

That was not a missing screw it is one of the holes you use a special key to take the face plate off with
Although the faceplate doesn't fit, it's usually the back of the housing that's beat up anyways. Just keep your original faceplate and use the replacement housing for the back of the console. That said I'd say it's quite remarkable! Bummer about the faceplate issue, but quickly forgettable IMO.
Great job 👍
For that price just take yours to a professional paint shop
Sniuchi that would be so sexy, could you imagine that?
They now come with the screws.
The micro is too small for me. I need the original GBA. It feels just right.
Where do You bought this complete Shell ?????
AliExpress.com he showed it in the video
Have you found a better one yet?
I noticed that the Nintendo logo at 4:19 looks very off. That's definetly a fake shell.

She’ll replacements are nice, but… All I really need a good quality Faceplate replacement…
this is a start point. new shells will be better. (i hope lol)

gba micro is insane expensive in brazil, like 3900 reais, 700$ impossible to get one =(
Hey revisit this topic, they got more colors
So you bought a Micro with broken latches and missing screws... then bought a scratched case for $30 that doesn't even fit properly.
Dude, I have a bridge for sale which I think you will LOVE!
Just send the case back for a refund.
For that price, new buttons should be included...
Finally about gb consoles.
Heyyy finallly!!!!!!!!
I'm lucky my original micro has been kept in the case since day 1. What a waste of money :(
I owned a Famicom Gameboy Micro once..stupidly enough I sold it :/ Now the price is super high and I can't afford one -_-
I Need replacement for l and r Buttons
30 $ is really pricey 4 the quality it was made of. I tried once replace shell on psp n those shell parts wouldnt fit together n would feel extremely cheap. The back door on umd disk drive wouldnt close n so I rather kept old scratched shell than have none functioning psp. Lesson learnt, dont buy replacement shell for your consoles/handhelds.
YES!!!
GBAM!!
So this is a "don't buy product"
i love this
Micro vids
Get the cheapest because they are all the same...
Bummer. Once again the micro gets the short end of the stick. Hopefully more aftermarket parts are made before these gameboys go extinct.
