  • I've had a unwelcome visitor to the layout...who likes to eat expensive trees and use the mainline for a toilet! This hasn't helped me in shooting a new video that explains the geometry of train wheels and why DPU's are a huge asset to railroads!

    Greg,
    You can use a black lightbulb to track down the rat piss. The piss will glow. Steel wool is a good item to use to stuff in holes where you suspect the rat(s) are getting in your building. They get rather torn up trying to chew through the steel wool.

    you need to find where it is getting in. a rat can collapse its rib cage to get through a gap under a door. you need to ensure all gaps under doors are less than 3/8". i try for much less than that. i fitted all the doors in my old house so that not even mice could squeeze through then i watched one use the rounded corner of the 100 year old pine door to get in. so i rehung the door even lower. i was renting a house that was infested with rats. i went round the entire place putting aluminium carpet trims under where all the exterior doors closed, except the front one which i put a spring-loaded draught excluder on. then one night, lying in bed i heard it springing. the bastards had worked out how to get under it. so i put a piece of carpet trim packed up with pieces of fibro to close that gap to just over zero. i also notice a hole in the wall at 3:36. i have known of instances where rats have tunnelled through plaster at the cornice to get access to the wall cavity. to all those country people experiencing the current mouse plague, they can be excluded, even in a rented house. neither rats nor mice will tackle steel wool. poke that in holes. stainless steel wool is better because it doesnt rust.

    may i offer a suggestion that may work for cleaning wheels or the track. i spent time on the internet looking for the best way to clean the stylus on an old-time record player. the best suggestion was "miracle cleaner". i think that was what it was called. you just push the stylus into it a couple of times. i think its called a micro-abrasive. an australian brand of it that i found was called "glitz wipeout". other modellers would know of it if it works, i'm sure.

    I’ve watched some of your videos and must say I think your very comical. Lol. Your video on doing scenery (no 23) got my attention and wanted to say, try placing your rock molds in the curved areas while your rock mold is still a bit wet and it will conform to the curve and leave all detail in place, let the plaster set before unmolding. Each additional mold can be overlapped and that will eliminate seams. Most independent mold suppliers use a thinner mold than woodland scenics which are a relatively thick rubber and are far less forgiving for this type of mold setting. Good luck and happy scenicking. Why let them dry and then cut and carve when they can be place while still a bit wet? Lol

    Hi Gregg, interesting video re the rodent. BTW did you manage to eradicate him/her? My reason for commenting is slightly off topic, but here goes. Looking at the wheel set of the tank car at 0:31 the flanges seem slightly bigger then the ones on the my Victorian Railways AW & BW kits. I don't know if you are familiar with the Steam Era Models (SEM) kits, but the flanges on the wheel sets provided with the kits seem very minimal compared to the ones on your tank cars. My layout is limited in size space wise so I cant have long locos or carriages due to the curve radii. I'm using code 100 Atlas flexible track and some Peco straight and curved sections along with mainly Peco points and a couple of Hornby points.
    Is there an ebay site, or manufacturer that you would recommend where I can source wheel sets with the deeper flanges. As I said this is off topic, but any help/recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks for reading my comment. .... Ian ....

    • @FishplateFilms
      @FishplateFilms  2 роки тому

      Hi Ian, yes I know of SEM kits , and the wheels you have are fine scale sets, which look much better than the standard ones on most HO cars. I have replaced quite a few of my hopper cars with fine scale wheels and the look and run much nicer...but they are too fine for code 100 turnouts and bump across them. Getting axles is a pain , as the axle length varies between makes , but Model Train Stuff have a good selection so you could try them?

    Rats or mice.. I can't think of anything much worse than that? I hope that you can make him suffer?
    An "almost full" bucket of water with some chaff spread floating on the surface works well? (and you get to see the drowned rat afterwards)? They jump in onto the chaff, and then it's all over for the rat.. No dead bodies from poison smelling the place up either?
    I can thank a horse for teaching me that trick.. He would spill some chaff into his water bucket, and inadvertently drown any rats that came into his stable looking to steal some food?

    Your Rat will hate the taste of Vinegar!!!!! Put Vinegar in your white glue, 50% with water and he will move on to someone else's layout! On a 2% grade, an average HO scale locomotive can pull (or push) 12 cars @ 6 ounces a piece. On a 4% grade, same locomotive can move about 7 cars at 6 ounces a piece! With the average locomotive weighing in at 1 pound, and a coefficient of friction (wheel to rail) of .25 I can get 5 locomotives up a 4% grade pulling 40 cars around a 44 inch radius without string lining! But if I go one lousy car over 40, it will string line!!!!!!!
    I don't like to push anymore than 5 cars with a DPU or "helper" set of 3 locomotives, so I am able to now run trains of 60 cars up the 4% with the helpers cut in at 45 cars deep with 15 cars behind the tonnage rating, pushing 5 or 6 cars. With this arrangement, I have no worries!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The lightest cars will be around 30 deep and the helpers will have cars that weigh right around 6 ounces a piece keeping the helpers just barely behind their tonnage rating (about 5 cars)!
