    This is why I love Jay Bilas. Loves college athletics for the same reason most of us do but isn't afraid to pull down the curtain and discuss all of its flaws.

    Jay Bilas is the real deal. He is a friend of the exploited and downtrodden athlete. I love this guy because he has true empathy for the athlete, whereas those who stand on the players necks just gove reasons why they should continue to do so, i.e., it is in the players best interest that the NCAA keep them broke and looking up to their taskmasters for the few crumbs that fall from the table. One crumb too many and the NCAA revokes reserves the right to revoke the player's scholarship. Heaven forbid that any spilled condiment dripped onto a consumed crumb.

    As someone in academia I'm really worried about that side of things when students (as coaches have done for years!) Are making a LOT more than most professors. It's great for the students but imagine being a prof getting paid 50k while these schools are funneling MILLIONS of dollars into sports.
    I think eventually there is going to need to be some solution. Not one that keeps the students and coaches from getting paid, but one that does divorce sports to some degree from the universities. Or that requires these athletic departments to always be operating in the black. Some athletic departments generate a lot of money for their school via revenue, but a LOT of athletic departments simply don't. This is one of the big reasons why tuition costs have gotten so high, the need to make schools more attractive through sports and similar things. It needs to stop.

      Could college’s just opt out of the NCAA and just do intramural sports?

    • @josephbordonaro
      @josephbordonaro 2 роки тому

      In time, I can see that divorce happening. A few of the top college programs could merge into the NFL or even create a competitive league. I'd argue that Ohio State has a bigger fan base than the Browns or Bengals and a nice-size media market. Columbus already has NHL and MLS teams, and the Browns have investigated moving their training facility and some pre-season games there. This change will take awhile as the money in the new situation will be so huge that there won't be a powerful impetus for colleges to change. Suck it up and just accept that professors aren't worth as much to their university as a great college athlete. Not in America. It will be interesting to see what happens to the D1 school wannabes (read MAC-type conference schools) who overpay their coaches while their programs are money losers. It will take time to shake out and for the market to reprice their true worth. As far as I am concerned, I am done paying to watch sports - college or pro. I've already seen thousands of games in my life. The market will get by fine without me.

    People that are tired with the same teams in the CF playoffs better get use to it. The schools with big booster pocketbooks are going to get the vast majority top notch players. Sure some schools are going to be able to pay a few players, but not as many. The rich get richer the poor are going to be relegated to the back burner. The big difference in Pro ball is there is a salary cap, not so for college football where rich school can spend as much as wanted. Anyone who denies this is living in a bubble

    For better or worse, we’re witnessing the end of collegiate athletics.
    This will soon be the equivalent of professional athletics - no salary cap and the schools with the wealthiest donors will become perpetual NCAA champions.
    Corruption will quickly follow until the concept of “amateur athletics” will become a distant memory.
    I’m not judging anything or anyone, just stating the obvious.
    I can easily see this getting to the point where there are no longer academic requirements - a “college” age player will just go to the school that pays the most, then hopefully make the NFL.
    Again, not judging, but there will soon be no need for college sports at all. College will become highly incentivized minor leagues for the NFL and the concept of college football Saturdays will be gone forever.
    RIP NCAA

      you must have some deficiency in eyesight. You haven’t noticed that college football has been dominated by four or five teams for the past decade or more. A
      NIL will at least spread out the good players to 10 or 20 more teams. You must be a fan of Alabama, Georgia, Clemson or Ohio State…the experts at bagmen.

    LOL! Jay Bilas has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for the death amateurism and the mess we're in now. Scholarship is not pay for play because everyone offers scholarships, the rules are the same for everyone. This is the typical moving of the goalposts that people like Jay engage in.
    The only reason these programs exist is because of the university, but Jay says the University doesn't matter. Then give your degree back Jay. Separate these programs and players from the University. They no longer have any association to the school, they don't get any money or funding from the school any longer, and they no longer are allowed to use school facilities. They have to fund themselves. How long do you think they last if the athletes are so valuable? The passion in college sports is because of the ties to the university, not the athletes.
