- Lyrics:
I can feel it on my tongue
brick and mortar as thick as scripture
drawing lines in the sand and laying borders as tall as towers
I babble on until my voice is gone
this hill I'll die on is about 90 meters of bricks
colored indigo, inscribed with my name, and lined with cedar
but the words fall flat like cymbals crashing
like molars gnashing
'cause like constellations a million years away
every good intention
is interpolation, a line we drew in the array
looking for the faces
looking for the shapes in the silence
all that's left for me to climb to the heavens is the chasm of the night
and a matter of time
but I hear the rumble
as the tectonic plates start to shake
and I feel my blood pounding like the beat of a drum
'cause like constellations a million years away
every good intention
is interpolation, a line we drew in the array
clinging to the faces
clinging to the shapes in the silence
like constellations imploding in the night
everything is turning
and the shapes that you drew may change beneath a different light
and everything you thought you knew will fall apart, but you'll be all right
“Hey, everyone! Our Tower of Babylon may be crumbling around us, and the empire of Babylon with it, but check out this *SICK* banjo solo!”
*beedeelee-deedeelee-WOW*
HA
I tried shouting, “Repent! The hour is at hand!” but nobody listened…. Perhaps the sick banjo solo is the best option at this point.
this is stupid to put in a youtube comment section, but one of my cats unfortunately passed today and I hold a horrible lingering sadness. This song is so beautiful, and the constellation imagery fit my cat, his name was Moon. I hope the next of his nine lives is with another family who truly loves him as much as we did, he was such a happy cat and I'm grateful he was apart of my life. And I'm so glad I found a song that reminds me of him in a way that feels so peaceful. Sorry, I needed to get this off my chest haha.
May Moon rest in peace 💐🌺🌸🌼
God bless you mate, animals are amazing and one way to look at it I'd through a spectacle of saying, how lucky I was to bond and share time with this great feline. Happy to hear you found some sense of comfort in the song :)
Stay strong , rest in peace moon 🫂🙏
It’s okay to vent when life gets heavy. I hope you can find peace now that Moon is at rest.
Don't feel bad man. I lost my cat Azzie when I was 15 and I still grieve him- he was my best friend. Ever since he died though I've had moments where it still feels like he comes around, so my theory is the other 8 lives go on to help and love other people, but the time they spent with us stays with us if that makes sense?
Okay but like… imagine this on a lyre or harp.
…I KNOW WHAT I GOTTA DO!
as someone with a lyre
im either gonna kill myself or ascend to the next level, but by jove, I will get this done.
Godspeed, you beautiful musician
How has that been?
may apollo bless me, i'll learn the lyre
I believe in you!
Something about The Oh Hellos always makes me feel like I'm in a fairytale
this song makes me feel like i’m standing in a circle of peace in the dead of night, stars shining above me, the grass waving in the gentle breeze, as the world crumbles around me. i know inside that nothing is right, everything is wrong, what is happening? but my heart is content and i feel safe and secure so i don’t move but i hum a beautiful tune and think about my past, present, and future, the stars turning in the sky above
that turned into a pov oops
this is my comfort song 🥺 no idea why, but i feel all warm & fuzzy whenever i listen to it!
it feels like late summer nights and a field full of fireflies. it takes me back to simpler times
@@idontneedaname318 I was thinking the exact same thing! It's like dancing in a field on a late warm summers evening with fireflies ;-;
Same!!
My girlfriend brought this up in a dnd session. Her character was in the bar of a town who had all their children snatched away during the night and seemed cursed. Her guitar began to fill the silence that had filled the town and the townspeople gathered around one by one. While this was going on, my character and my boyfriends(yes poly) character were freeing some the children and we began to fight the monster who was capturing and eating them. We threw the wooded doll like monster into a nearby dying hearth. As it was on its last legs, my character punched it so hard it fell back into the fire, releasing the town of its curse as it burnt away. The children came back to the town, even the ones who had passed and came to say goodbye. It was somber and sweet and I loved the song she picked out and now I can't stop listening to it.
D&D is one hell of a trip, this sounds like a really good time
Maybe I’m just sleep-deprived but
In the line “The words fall flat like cymbals crashing”
Cymbals sounds like symbols
And the whole song is about what happens when our beliefs are torn down.
In other words, symbols crashing down
As a drummer, I see this as an interesting take.
The words "babble on" within "I babble on until my voice is gone" also seem to intentionally sound like "Babylon", especially when the line before it talks about laying borders tall as towers. Really clever lyrics
Could be.
Though I think it is also probably a reference to the idea that speaking without love is like a clashing cymbal, as per St. Paul in one of his letters that he wrote.
@@PJDMC5306 Great thing about poetry is that the same words can have many meanings. I wasn't aware of the Biblical reference but that just adds to it.
"I babble on" I see what they did there hehe
I was just listening to this song just now I was lying beside my window with lots of stars out praying for a shooting star. Right as my favorite part comes on I see the most amazing shooting star
the vibes with this song, makes me feel like im in the woods, at night, with someone i love and care watching for the constellations, really beautiful
Man this song has so much too it. It's like, tower of Babylon, like constellations. we look up at this big night sky that we think is so cool, and we imagine constellations in it, a little bit of us in the heavens. And we wanted to build the tower, for all of humanity to work together. Every good intention, they just wanted to do good together, but they still had to be stopped. This song just has so much woven into it, it's amazing how the oh hellos can make an absolute bop with like 5 different layers to it
don't know if i'm just really dumb for not picking up on this, but indigo and cedar trees symbolize long-lasting wisdom and I cannot believe they did that. they really did that.
This song came to me when I needed it the most. I'm in my twenties, saying goodbye to my student life, looking for jobs, family breaking appart. Everything that was familiar and reassuring to me is disappearing and I'm going into the unknown, scared and anxious. But this song appeared in front of me, telling me "Everything you thought you knew will fall appart but you will BE ALRIGHT", and I took it as a sign. And it was. It is.
Thank you for uploading that beautiful song
I just wanna say this is such a lovely lyric video!! it rly captures the vibes of the song and is visually interesting enough for me not to get distracted, I love it!! also the font is an immaculate choice
thank you! I was kinda insecure about the font but I'm glad you liked it!
This song makes me feel like i'm at the end of time, like on a mountain where is surpasses the clouds. I'm with everyone I love and everyone I will grow to love. And I'm just dancing in a forest with halos around my head, like a young god,
i love comment sections like this; it’s like a cosy safe place, not too crowded, everyone just enjoying the music together, inspiring each other and imagining what it all could mean. it’s magical :)
I've been making my way through the backlog of oh hellos lyrics videos, and can I just say how nice they all look? They just give a very soft vibe that fits the songs very well
this song is very nice, the banjo/ukelele is at perfect timing and the lyrics are great. it reminds me of one time when i was wisiting a friends summer home and after a long car-ride we finally arrived in the middle of the night and the sky was just filled with stars, it was breathtaking.
This is so underrated !
Nothing built can last forever. And no legend, no matter how great, fades with time
Thanks for this visual artwork. It perfectly fits the energy. Not too slow, not too quickly; it's awesome.
As someone who has a fear of change and also a fear of forgetting my past this song is really comforting.
It shows that change is alright and that it will all end up ok in the end. It reminds that even though i have changed a lot and so have other things that doesnt necessarily mean its a bad thing. It reminds me that things may seem bad at some points but it will change and thats alright.
That everything we've done and what for centuries we've held our truths unto, our beliefs and our lives, is no more than A Line We Drew In The Array.
I love how you edited this thank you!!!
=)
This song is so original! There is no other song it reminds me of. I love it
When I listen to it with headphones I sob but I don't cry when it's played aloud... why?
Man, the instrumentals in The Oh Hellos’ songs are so good
only 25 comments??? underrated omg!!
Thank you so much! I really really needed something like this, the song is so gorgeous, and the art that's there in your video makes it all the more mesmerising. Thank you.
An ORV fan I see?
@@mallorywiley4718 yup that's right, I love ORV! you?
@@bunnies9335 I came here looking for a song to make an imaginary MV to. I was satisfied this is a bop.
@@mallorywiley4718 I was gonna say I wanna see the MV and then I saw the imaginary lmao
this is cool!
thanks!
This is my favorite song by them!
this is my favorite song of all time!
What a dope song. Poetic and beautiful
I'm listening to this as I call out all of the lies in my life and writing scripture on my hand so that I won't forget the truth
This is kinda pocket but I LOVE THAT YOU DO THIS! I've been struggling with lies in my life as well and I often try to do this but run out of motivation/courage. This song just fits so well and now that you mentioned the idea to do so, it will make it a lot less difficult to block out the negative thoughts and keep on pushing through. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
What the hecc is this song about? I get "babble on" refers to Babylon with the tower and cymbals doubles as symbols. What can be felt on the tongue? Cedar is important somehow? There are mostly run on sentences and they don't seem to have fullstops. Lines both in the sand and array? Why indigo? Hill with bricks 90 meters long or wide or maybe high? Is every brick inscribed with the name and ceder or is on the wall? Oh how I love the bit after the "in silence" and the words molars gnashing. Climbing a night chasm to the heavens though? Why is there an earthquake? What is it that is like the constellations anyway? Is it the intentions? What is the interpolation? What is going on in this song? I have so many more questions. It's so beautiful but so confusion. Why do the shapes change when the lighting is different? Halp? At least I know I'll be alright at least!!
This is taken from Reddit from a user named AHippocampus, so all credit goes to him/her.
The first verse is an image of the Ishtar Gate (which is blue and lined in cedar) constructed by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. This is the Biblical King that captured Jerusalem. After building the gate, he dedicates the work to his gods with an inscription (not lacking in self-praise.) The ancient Babylonians, like many cultures, had their deities represented by constellations. A lot of the constellations the Babylonians used were adopted and shifted to be used by Greeks and their zodiacs.
The shapes the culture(s) drew in the stars changed.
Interpolation means "the insertion of something of a different nature into something else." I think this sums up the message of the chorus in the lyrics.
There's arguably a triple play on words here: "I'll babble on until my voice is gone." We have the inscription of Nebuchadnezzar, "Babylon," and the Biblical Tower of Babel.
The Tower of Babel is important to know about because it represents mankind reaching for heaven in his own way instead of filling and stewarding the Earth like he was told to do by God. I was taught and I still take it to mean: mankind will always try to find their own way to climb up to a god-like or heavenly status themselves. History is filled with rulers with god complexes. I don't think it's a stretch to apply that here, since that was a part of King Nebuchadnezzar's arc and towers are mentioned in the lyrics as well.
The last line is hopeful. Everything we thought we knew will fall apart, but we'll be alright.
Having your worldviews challenged and facing paradigm shifts are a part of growth.
Oh my goodness @@eloyloman4713 dude thank you

I really like this song but..
It reminds me of Technoblade oddly enough
As in, Techno singing it? I can hear it. :]
