1 of my interpretations of this song: a domestically abusive relationship where the abuser was actually the first one to leave, making the victim think back on the memories in a bittersweet way, thinking back on the way they depended on the person. Realizing that there was so much they missed, and that that person was their world. But after thinking back, they are thankful that person left.

Our galaxy is the sun’s palace, and it is the ruler. It gives light to each and every planet, though unfairly, since some are given less light then others. Logically the sun, in all its glory, does not even acknowledge the moon. Really, isn’t the earth the only one that is able to respect and acknowledge it’s existence? Since so many planets have their own moons.
It’s a sad story, whether platonically or romantically everyone in this galaxy longs for the suns love, for its light. There are few who are showered in it, and even then that is simply only a fraction of it.
For all of the moons glow and quiet presence, it truly is nothing compared to the sun. And thus, could never really have its full attention or love.
The suns love is simply too divided, too scarce, for one as vacant as the moon.

I see a lot of people interpreting this song as an abusive romantic relationship, which is probably what it is, but I interpret it as the relationship of the golden child(moon) and the rest of the family(sun) and how the child is realizing that they never had a choice in anything

That line is the family leading the child down the path of "success" without giving the child a choice.

many people are interpreting this song as an abusive relationship, and it would make sense! but mine is a little different. i dont know what it is but the part "I loved you like the sun" and "I shine only with the light you gave me" could fit the abuse narrative but for me it feels more like they broke up with someone they loved so deeply, who made them open up and feel so powerful. but when they left the person felt alone and empty, like they couldn't shine on their own. but also towards the end it leads up into them forcing themselves to burn on their own- which is cool. :)

I personally interpret it as the pressure from family to a younger sibling to a very successful person. The older sibling is shining all the light, keeping the younger sibling in constant shadow. Still, the younger sibling adores the older sibling and thinks they're perfect. The younger sibling could have done anything they wanted, been anyone they wanted, but their family wanted them to be like their older sibling. Even once that's achieved, the still stand in the shadow of their older sibling. The younger sibling just goes with it, becoming apathetic. They knew their path, was familiar for their entire life, and was kept from what they truly loved in favour of being like their sun.
This song makes me think of the identity dysphoria that comes with a bad childhood. It's like when you just start thinking you are how you want to be, the trauma and pain comes flooding back. It's makes you really think about how different, happier, and better overall as a person you could've been. It feels like youve been robbed of what suppose to make you yourself.

My interpretation of the song was that there was a couple, not an abusive relationship
But, I think the person (the moon) was somewhat depressed or stressed because of office problems, family problems, and any problems. But he\she had a lover which is the sun. The sun was the only reason why the moon lived like the moon was emotionally dependent on the sun. It's like the moon can't live without the sun.

My interpretation of this song is someone in a relationship (the moon) has had so much help from their parter (the sun) to achieve what they want in life to the point where the moon is no longer able to see anything as totally their own or that being around the sun has changed them to the point that they are not showing who they really are but what the sun wants/shows them to be.

My interpretation of this song is one of a relationship where the sun is way ahead of the moon and follows in their light, therefore losing their identity and themselves. Think of it was like a little fan pursuing to be exactly like their idol but ends up confused when they could’ve chosen anything else then what the sun has chosen. Because the moon wouldn’t be glowing because of the sun despite being far away.

I know everyone probably realised this but “i shine only with the light you gave me” is basically the moon only ‘shines’ because the sun shines on it so it’s reflecting that. I pose to you all a (very abbreviated) fantasy story.
There once lived a pair of twins. One was friendly with a sunny disposition and the other was cynical with a closed off and cold demeanor. The sunny one lived by their heart, letting their emotions guide them. The other lived by their brain, letting logic guide them.The twins decided one day that they were 2 halves of the same person. So, at the request of the logical one, they found a witch to put them together. It only worked partially though. One could feel more strongly but the other felt as though they couldn't feel enough. But, the 2 carried on, getting along better now they were the same person in 2 bodies. Though one continued to feel as though something was wrong. One day, however tragedy struck. There was an accident and the one who used to be the cheerful one was killed. As their memories flowed into the logical one they wept. With tears in their eyes, they realized the twins were never the same. Now knowing everything the other gave to make them happy- even going as far as to go so numb so that they could feel just a taste of that fire- they cried "I shine only with the light you gave me."

My interperetation of the song is the moon was lost without the sun. the moon was struggling to find who they were and were very closed off. didnt trust anyone. quiet and dark. didnt talk but was struggling. then the sun came around and the moon instantly opened up. the sun helped the moon findw ho they were and helped them through all their problems. later in life, the Sun passed, leaving the moon in their darkness with only the light the sun gave them, no light of their own.
based on my personal experiences I interpreted this as someone (sun) making someone else (moon) a better person from being who they used to be. Now they doubt everything they know and wonder if this person (the sun) was helping or hurting. or if how they lived was so horrible and dark that a bit of light is a mystery or a danger.

I added this song to my dnd character playlist however my interpretation and part of the backstory I used this for was this.
My character, a wood elf, fell in love with a drow. My wood elf had always lived a life being responsible for others, being taking for granted, and was secretly a pessimistic person because of how they have always been treated. When they met their drow lover it was when they had finally made the leap to do things for themselves and journey around with their mentor. The drow lover absolutely fascinated them as they were strong, yes, (important since my character was a fighter) but were also sweet, sincere, sentimental and a idealistic optimist. My wood elf was enamored and the two hit off and spent many years together before the tragedy happened. The pair were attacked by a remorhaz and their drow lover sacrificed themselves to protect my wood elf. The remorhaz was cut down by my character and their lover’s body was extracted and my wood elf tried to return their lover to the brother. The brother immediately accused my character of being at fault for the death of their sibling and declared a feud on them. My wood elf agreed to that sentiment, believing they deserved the hatred. But now my wood elf was alone, no lover, no friend (the brother of the lover), and a toxic family they couldn’t turn to. They had already had horrible argument with their mentor and led to them falling out too.
So this song? It represents all the hurt, grief, and even resentment my character felt towards their lover while still understanding how deeply they meant to them, loving them, but not able to move on. Just drifting from day to day, trying to be better, trying to see the world as their lover once did, so something of their legacy remains, but still at a loss. They love their lover but also resentment for making a choice for them (protecting them) and leaving them alone, without the life they wished for (to live together for the rest of their lives) but still unable to see beyond that old dream and love. Their lover was their sun, and my character saw themself as the moon, reflecting the legacy of their beloved and all the good they saw in them.
That was my interpretation of this song.

While thats one way to put it, i personally see this as two siblings. The sun(older brother)
And of course, the moon(younger brother). The sun became a great person. His parents(the universe) loved him very much.
Meanwhile the moon had little to no potential.
The sun wanted the moon to follow after him and so put him through so much just to make him great. Meanwhile the moon was upset and thought that it was too much and just wanted to be normal.
The moon ended up becoming just like his brother, but with a lower status because of the many others like him(the other moons).
But while many people saw a person of great fame, in reality it was all because of his elder brother,the Sun.
Thus the line "I shine only with the light you gave me" reffering to how the moon only reflects of the Suns light. Meaning all the Moons popularity just because of what the Sun did for him.
Although the Moon despised his brothers actions, he loved him knowing of his good intentions, thus "I loved you like the sun"
Though the neglect his parents gave him for many years, and all the pain his brother put him through, He loved all of them.
Though still wishing he had a choice.
That hits different because that is eieerily simliar to my relationship to my brother.
We was super successful, and went to Cambridge. Was super smart, got amazing grades, and I adored him. I want to be exactly like him. He left home when he was 23, and I was 6. I idolised him. I didn't have much contact with him. I could've done anything I wanted, gone anywhere since I am similarly smart, but I am autistic and struggle in social situations. I only recently realised that I had never made a single decision for myself. So, recently, I gave up on applying for Cambridge and have decided to go to whatever university I want to. My family were always pushing me to be like him. "You look just like your brother." "You look like if your brother was a girl." All this while, I had loved him so much it hurt. And he had never bothered to contact me. I'm I my late teens, and I've decided that I'm going to do what makes me happy. I would rather be less academically successful, and live my life and love others that will actually bother to love me back.

To me, it reminds me of how I'm changing myself for the better, little by little, because of my girlfriend. She's the kindest, funniest person I've ever met, and when I make decisions, I now think what she would have done. How would she react if I said that rude thing to someone, how would she react if I did that? It's not in an unhealthy way, I just stop and consider what I'm going to do. Ok. But I'm imagining this for an OC of mine. She's blind and somewhat religious.
Now the reason I think of this for her is because she has times where she really wishes, deep in her soul, that she wasn't born the way she was. She wishes she wasn't blind. She wishes she could see. She wishes that colour and light and objects didn't evade her. . . .
She wishes God didn't have such a crude sense of humor.
I also have a character this reminds me of, she isn’t blind, but she’s a prophet and extremely religious(not for God, some other religion that I created, it’s a high fantasy) and she lives in a cave system (she’s a Drow). For this song, I imagine it talks about two things for her, the loss of her baby brother who was the last blood-related family she had. And also her besieging the gods for their cruelty. Wondering why they would do this too her, who was such a loyal servant to them.

They called me fat pig as a “joke” and did something that hurt me and said it was a “dare.” They also blamed me for everything they did, when I said “this won’t work”, they will act all innocent and start begging me to come back.

My interpretation:
Moon (victim) was in a relationship (familial/romantic/friendship) with Sun (abuser) - the relationship is long over but only now can Moon call a name to it. Even after all this time, moon has trouble being their own light.
This song is why in my writing the moon goddess is married to the ocean goddess and they are happy and gay
i'm thinking this song for the goddess of dreams and goddess of love in my book ^^
