I like the way you explain the turns. A lot of videos show people playing but don't explain why you are taking a particular coin or coins. It really helps to understand the game more.
@adam19742007, the rules statement "don't touch the gold" refers to the two player set-up when determining the number of tokens with which to play. In a two player game, players can collect a gold token when reserving a development card while gold is still available.
Is there a way to control what ads show up on your videos? The ad that kept playing was quite literally the most offensive and sexist ad I've seen in recent years
@@rahdo Assuming he's talking about the same one I saw, there's one ad that has occasionally showed up saying things like "these simple tricks can make any girl fall for you" and had an associated website titled GetGirlsToChaseYou(dot)com or something like that. I was caught off guard by that too, as it seemed quite objectifying to women on top of assuming the audience agrees with pre-defined gender roles. I'm not sure if there's a way for content creators to moderate specific companies showing ads on their videos, but if it is I would personally recommend doing so for that one in particular if you want to ensure your content is seen as neutral on controversial standpoints and viewers don't end up feeling alienated. That's just my two cents
@@Goomba_Smash omg that's horrible! thanks for letting me know, i'm sorry about that. i do have all "sensitive subjects" turned off in my ad settings (no politics, no dating, no alchohol/gambling/etc. it sounds like whoever this site is has snuck through. i'll report it to youtube and hopefully they can fix this!
@@rahdo Thanks for the response! Yeah, the one Goomba described sounds like the one. Sorry if my original comment came across as harsh, I didn't mean for it to if it did.
okay i just spent an hour in chat with youtube support, and long story short is that even though i've got all sensitive subjects blocked, ads like this can still sneak through. if you see the specific URL associated with it and let me know, i can block that specifically. also you can report the ad as inappropriate as well: support.google.com/google-ads/contact/vio_other_aw_policy that's all i got! :(
Just got this game and played it for the first time. Pretty fun and simple but with a good deal of strategy. The game ended a lot sooner than we expected though!
This would be somewhere in the description of turn options:@3:20 When reserving a card, you can always choose one of the face down cards in the draw decks. Not the greatest of ideas, but its an option :).
No worries, we are sitting at home watching the game. You are trying to explain, play and film it. It also makes it fun to watch the strategic mistakes or choices you make, it adds a lot of fun to the videos.
If I am purchasing a card that requires say, 1 Blue, 1 Green and 1Red and I have in my hand 1 Blue card, 1 Green token and 1 Green card, and 1 Red card, can I keep my Green token and just “use” my 1 Green card?
sorry it's been years since i played so i don't remember specifics, but if you check boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/148228/splendor/forums/0 i'm sure you'll get an answer from folks very quickly! :)
@wetwillyccma, I believe Rahdo is playing correctly. The way I see it, a player can take 2 gem tokens of the same color if there are at least four tokens of the same color left (at the time) when the player takes them.
***** Yeah but in this video I don't really think you are in "play mode" but "explain mode". Honestly I don't mind you made silly moves. I've notices a couple too but thanks for your explainations. Since English isn't my first language I can tell you I appreciate the clarity of your speaking. Great job and tell Jen we like her no matter what :p
"This game moves really, really quickly." Then Radho spends 3 minutes in AP. :p And after watching Doug Herring's play-through and this one, I think the diamonds bury themselves at the bottom of the deck as they're camera shy.
+Gabriel Alaka If you're interested in a bit more of a complex game, you may want to give 7 Wonders a chance. Although it has some complicated score calculations, it's still a great game, and it's up to 7 players (7 Wonders, get it? LOL) and if I remember correctly, there is a rule that allows for up to 8 players. It still holds this feeling of "racing" ahead of your opponents, but with a completely different theme. I particularly find 7 Wonders a lot of fun, but Splendor is for sure a much more straightforward game to teach to newcomers. If your worries are for the number of players, go for the former!
I haven't played Splendor, but have watched the game play. I have to agree with Gabriel that 7 Wonders is a quick game with up to 7 players with the building theme. It doesn't finish by a score, but more by turns (18 total turns). Unlike this game, you can use your neighbors supplies at a set cost. You usually have a general idea on who is winning, but there is no real score till the end and you can be quite surprised.
Wow.. this one smells a bit of Saint Petersburg. Not that it would be bad to relate to that great game, but I think perhaps I may avoid Splendor because that engine-building itch has already been scratched.
honestly i really love small world and merchant maurauders instead of this. the reason is its overview and great variation. i really love the game king of new york and king of tokyo. this game is not what i look for in terms of buying and trying out. its not of my games im afraid :(
Perhaps ive been playing it wrong (or my strategies are different) but to me it seems like a waste to be reserving cards as often as you were here. Particularly early in the game. The only real time i think to be reserving cards is to either block someone/grab a card someone else is interested in, or if the color is rare in the market/you think someone else will grab it. I think over reserving just sells yourself short of the ultimate currency, you only get 1 Gem, instead of a potential 3 Gems.
Oh buddy, you played the whole game wrong. The rules state: Take 3 gem tokens of different colors. Take 2 gem tokens of the same color. This action is only possible if there are at least 4 tokens of the chosen color LEFT when the player takes them. You need to fix that on the video please. People will play it your way and get it wrong. The only way to get 2 of the same color is to have 4 people playing. There will be enough chips to do that. So with 4 people there would be 7 tokens out. I love this game and play it all the time on Friday nights at our friends house. Please, please, please fix this MAJOR mistake on the video or shoot another one. I love your video's but this is way wrong, changes the whole out look of the game. Thanks.
Rahdo's interpretation is correct. It is clearer in the Selecting tokens section: "Reminder: players may not take 2 tokens of the same color if there are less than 4 tokens available of that color."
poobslag Your right it does say that. They counteract each other. Hmmmmmm I will have to check Board Game Geek to see if there is an official ruling from the designer. Interesting........ Thanks. Sorry if I am wrong.
wetwillyccma I just checked, I watched a video from Watch It Played with Rodney and a guy from Asmodee and I was wrong. He said it in the first few minutes. My bad, Sorry Rahdo I was an idiot. Now I can show everyone in my group the real way of playing. Thanks poobslag for pointing it out to me. I wish they had the wording correct in the game rules section. Must have been a translation mistake. BBG had a bunch of people discussing it too. I feel bad about bringing it up on your video Rahdo, please forgive me. Now it's a whole new world of playing Splendor for me and my gaming group. :)
Most overrated game I've seen in a long while. It's like a deckbuilding game without deckbuilding, anyone can up with this game to be honest, I don't understand the hype. Anyway thanks for the run through !

Rahdo sorta sounds like Weird Al doing a game review. Which makes it even more entertaining.

23:03 ish you spend 2 emerald & 1 wild but have a emerald producing card so don't need to spend wild
yup i made PLENTY of less than ideal moves :)
i hate highlighting them, it must be hard to keep it all in your head

note added... thanks :)
Jen could have reserved the 1 point emerald mine card gained the gold and purchased the emerald mine the next turn
My thoughts exactly.

question about the Joker....is that a 1 use thing? if I use it to get a card does it go back to the "house" or can I keep using it? Thanks!

@19:16 you actually had 5 blue saphires, which should have given you the 2 point card in second row. Or you could have kept our wild

19:09 Jane doesnt have to spend a wild
It was already noted... Please turn on the Klingon subtitles to see where Richard goofs up… Thanks :)
You made PLENTY of less than ideal moves :)
this is what i'm sayin'! :)
Don't the rules say that in a 2-player game "Don't Touch the Gold?"
that's only referring to the fact that you don't adjust the number of gold chips in 2p :)
I think "Jen" is in your head, mate.
