    Moving around the fingerboard smoothly and effortlessly as possible is something we should all be aiming for - but, it can be a serious challenge to master that type of fluidity.
    This is exactly why I recommend that all of my students not only study technique, but break down the study of technique into bite size exercises focusing on things such as shifting, plucking hand technique, flying fingers, posture, and much more.
    One of the key factors to gaining a smooth and fluid type movements around the fingerboard is to have a very efficient shifting technique - as in, how we move are hands between positions on the fingerboard, and where our attention is focused while doing so.
    In this lesson you're going to learn 3 great shifting exercises that will help you not only understand how to work on your overall shifting technique - but also the importance of visualisation when shifting.
    As always, see you in the shed...
    Scott :)

    Great lesson Scott! I find that shifting is often overlooked on bass guitar, while it is a focus point on many string instruments, for example good ol' double bass. good stuff
    Plus I had to transcribe that last lick cause it's just too cool

    Thank you Scott, this is another great exercise which I'll be working on. I've never really practiced scales on one string much, but I can see how it links up the entire fretboard now. I'll be expanding this exercise to include the major scale on every string in every position up the fretboard!

    Absolutely agree about saying the alphabet backwards. Supposedly frequently used for sobriety testing, but I don't see how. I would fail stone sober every time.

    • @samgendler
      @samgendler 6 років тому

      The only context in which it would be used in a sobriety test is to attempt to trick the suspect into saying "but I couldn't even do that if I was sober," but the tendency to say that even when you ARE sober surely means that countless lawyers have long since demolished the validity of such a statement in court.

    You can say the alphabet backwards relatively easily by adapting your visualization lesson. For playing bass, you look at the next position while playing the current note(s). For the alphabet, as you say "Z", think "Y". As you say "Y", think "X". Do I get bonus bonus points?

    I would actually like a tutorial on "feeling" or "sensing" the distance to move. Scott is a big proponent of "looking" at the fingerboard and "seeing" his patterns and shifts. Why be mentally tied (distracted) with that when you should be moving up and down based on pitch changes or when the chord progression demands? For example - the music requires a shift from position 3 on the A string (C note) up to a F on the same string, a major third interval. I would like tips on how to improve that accuracy. When reading a fast tempo score one doesn't have much time to look at the fingerboard. I'll probably look at what double bassists do.

    Great lesson Scott, though I'm thinking that an unlined fretless is not the best bass for me to use for it. It does however work as an EXCELLENT fretless intonation exercise as well.

    So when moving down the neck, do you try to have all four fingers pressing on each fret and then lift them one at a time (pinky, ring, middle, index), or do you just apply pressure on the specific fret being played?

    • @michaelbenzinger8367
