How to play harmonics on bass (8 must know shapes)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 22 тра 2020
- I was totally floored when I first heard Jaco’s Portrait of Tracy (try playing that final chord!).
I remember watching Modern Electric Bass on VHS back in the ’80s. Jerry Jemmott asked Jaco about his use of harmonics and Jaco said that it was thanks to tuning his bass, and that “it sounded like music to me".
With harmonics we’re moving beyond the standard list of bass guitar techniques, and you probably don’t need to be able to play them all to become a pro bassist. BUT if you can get to grips with the fundamentals then you’ll open up a whole new world of ideas.
In this lesson you’re going to learn:
- The 8 shapes that every bassist needs to know.
- How to combine harmonics with an open E string.
- My favourite harmonics licks and tricks.
- THAT Jaco chord!
- And much, much more
As always, see you in the shed...
Scott :)

Bass guitar natural harmonics sound beautiful, so rich in tone. Even more beautiful than guitar ones, I must admit. :3
As a guitar player myself, totally agree with you
nice n thick
there is , of course , a good reason for it ... the harmonics on both guitar and bass strings offer the same sub and super iterations
the DIFFERENCE is the starting point and relative volume / intensity
take a breath ...
lower notes offer more audible overtones at a louder frequency due to the energy in the oscillations of the string ... mass to energy conversion and to reinforce the "! loveley " they start an octave lower so contain a subwoofer element more powerful than the cheesewire of a guitar and they are more massive so generate more electricity in the pickup because of physics
big thick bass string whopping around versus the relatively shy vibrations of a guitar string ... energy transfer to air movement via electromagnetism ... bigger moter more power ... air movement to ear drum ...ear drum to brain ... brain to youtube ...
Yeah. They just sound so much thicker, if that makes sense.
Just subscribed been playing bass since I was sixteen. I’m now 31 with a one year old baby girl, who keeps trying to rip myself bass off me and I’m trying to learn more so i can let her get much better than me and your videos are good for me to get more out of my bass. Cheers
Wow this lesson is sooo cool. I remember that after I discovered harmonics on bass, I got into overtone singing right after. The harmonic series is like the mother of music.
Doing harmonics on flute was key to opening up my tone.
God I have learned so much for free from this man🙏🙏🙏
That bass is beautiful, and it sounds AWESOME.
Been practicing both bass and tuba (as well as a bit of trombone) during the shutdown and stumbled upon recording of Dave Bargeron who played trombone and tuba in Jaco's band. Apparently, he also a part of several jazz tuba bands, which is really motivating me to pair up bass and tuba in recordings where having some high harmonics may lead to some interesting timbres, lol
Harmonics are absolutely my favorite technique on bass, thank you so much for this video! Learned so many cool tricks!
Love this Scott! In 2018 I returned to my music after a 38 year hiatus!! I started out with 6-string guitar, but I'm in love with the Bass. Thanks for video dude.
this is the kind of stuff why i love your channel.
always something useful, regardless of skill level.
john myung described bass harmonics as a separate instrument within your bass...
this is definitely making the list.
I can attest to the players path route. It has brought me to a level of playing and understanding my bass that I thought I would never have.
Been waiting for this material for a really long time, thanks Scott!!
You guys are masters, thanks for such an amazing class again!
I'd love to see a tutorial on Artifical harmonics (pinch harmonics)
MrMasongray the better term is “false harmonics” because pinch is really just a guitar technique with a pick, but, yeah, I agree with your request.
me too!! the same question for Scott !
@@HiImSeanIPlayBass u can do it with your fingers if you litteraly pinch the string
I mean... I don't even have my bass yet, played guitar almost 15 years now, but you just let your thumb brush the string during a stroke, or for plucking, use two fingers "pinched" together- letting the second one to just brush the string. I just hold my picks real low(I use curvy grip picks just for this) and when I want to pinch, just tilt my pick til my thumb caresses the string and BOOM: pinch harmonic. :) I have my RG350 tuned to G standard which has a .062 6th string and it works with it, so I believe this should also work on bass. :)
That was a great lesson Scott! Thank you
Very cool Scott. Thank you for breaking down the chords.
Thankyou for this, I’ve been trying to incorporate this stuff for ages
Scott yer the shit man from my beginnings on bass up until now you have guided me along the way and I just wanna say thanks.
The Nobel Prize folks need to come up with an award for bass music illumination just for you Scott....every year.
Hey,Scott! I’ m a guitar player but I love your channel! And it’s getting better and better!
Very interesting... Thanks Scott
Good stuff as always
This.
This is the video i was waiting for.
SUPER cool lesson!
Love being part of this great gang! Good stuff as always Scott!
!! ¬ !!
a second camera view angled to how i would look at the fret board
Thanks for the video Scott, Player's Path is really great, a couple of years ago I got a lifetime subscription to your page but I really didn't use it until now, because on top of learning the system is fun to follow up.
I love the Players Path a lot. Great to enhance my reading skills. Thanks Scott and Co ;-)
Great Great Great .
thank you Scott
The new intro is fire 🔥
Scott I'm from Canada, I learned a lot from u. Thank u so so much buddy.
2:30 "Dial it on to that bridge pickup"
*sad p-bass noises*
Pino: hold my fretless Stingray...
Yeah you're right brother
Happy pj-bass noises
Yeah, get yourself a better bass
@@Skelterbane69 a better bass? p basses are fine, just not for harmonics tbh
Sorry, Scott, I didn’t heard a word you said. I was mesmerized by that incredible watch.
Nice to see a Sadowsky in the mix.
Scott was suposed to be giving away that bass some time ago. He announced a winner for that bass. What´s wrong here?
@@rubenprietomoreno7831 His multiple spamming of his warez is just about enough for me to un sub.
Funny thing now i can see some parts of your vidéos inside other videos since you made publicity of your channel, congratulations for taking your school project to the next level !
Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!.. Sorry, I had too. I am sure I am not the only one. If you do not know the line, it is from an American Western, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre with Humphrey Bogart. Scott, love all the Bass info. I just got my first Bass Guitar a week ago. I am still working on the basics, fingers, scales etc. But I have more time to watch all of this good theory as I practice my basic skills. Thanks so much to you and your team. Your fret hand and finger fluidity is remarkable. You, just warming up your fingers, is music to our ears. Good music.
🧡🧡🧡
Great lesson, thanks Scott. Now off to incorporate that in my latest song....
Could you do more ”Bassists you should know” videos? I dont really care who you make a video about but id love to see that kind of videos.
That is a SICK bass
My college bass teacher and I worked on that exact chord from Jaco
Nice one, Sir.
O, Scott, thanks YOU!!!
Love it 😎👍🏻
I like. You do well. Great spirit, you are.
thanks scott^^
Great video, thanks.
Btw there are additional interesting shapes you can do
watching this at nearly 12 at night and im here like, interesting, could be useful, need to learn more theory
for me its all the groupings around 4-5 frets up from an open note and thus 16-17 an octave up (or pinch style past the fingerboard 😃), and knowing what note it creates... It's a great spot(s) for noodly improv to incorporate them into a lick!
I have licks where I end a lick on an interval, then tap the octave harmonics before dropping to the next lick
First time I've actually seen someone say "Bob's your uncle" lol. Nice vid, man.
Players path is awesome! I’m level 6. Working on philly right now. :)
Hey Scott. Amazing lesson. Reminded me of some Squarepusher stuff, which I’m sure he snagged from Jaco. Have you checked him out? He literally shreds. He’s in the UK too. Check out a track called “The Coat Hanger” or “Male Pill Part 13”
Love that Sadowsky !
excellent
Great stuff! What kind of compression is going on there Scott? Pedal or amp?
Can we take a second to enjoy that c minor run Scott smashed out? Tidy
This lesson is really amazing and very usefull. Thanks Scott for open the world of harmonics to all the non educated (musically meaning) fools like me.
Wow I like so much your comment greetings from Africa Uganda
Scott, what's the intro music? It's awesome!! I love it! Cheers!
Hey Scott big fan here 😁 👌👌👌
Cheers, Bibek :)
also while in C major you can use the 4th fret harmonic on the G string with the 7th fret harmonic on the A string, G on th D string, and C on the E string, for a beautiful Cmaj7 voicing
Awesome, love harmonics on bass, thank you
Fantástico, muito bom , viva o baixo .
no hablo portugues, pero entendi tu comentario :D
Great page but since I see and hear you everytime I try to watch a video there is no need to stay subscribed lol
With active electronics, you can basically pull out harmonics anywhere on the fretboard bc of the output boost
Scott, you should do a video essay on Geddy Lee. My #1 bassist. Just seems like he should have one for being the goat
In what way is he the goat
A whammy bar tremlow bridge and natural harmonics on bass guitar
have you ever monitored your intro tune on big studio speakers ? this is shaking the town
When using the major 3rd and the #11 one could say that your doing a Lydiany sound.😜🤣😂
That's great lesson harmonic, thanks Scott!!! It's really helpful for me to learning the harmonics... Do we need any effect to make a great harmonics? Thank you...
Wonderful lesson! Thank you
You don't really need one, but a compressor can make the harmonics louder
Elisa Belinda bright/new strings, and using the bridge pickup can help. The particular bass can also be a factor, though technique and practice are where to focus. Best wishes.
Chorus pedal
Love that you showed the master of harmonics right at the beginning of the clip.
@Scott... thank you so much for this lesson. There’s much in here to distill, and much that’s new to me as well.
An amazing coincidence... I’ve been listening to a lot of Jaco’s works (and Weather Report) this past week. Portrait of Tracy... I’m addicted to. This is a great article from this year, in his memory...
www.guitarworld.com/features/jaco-pastorius-in-appreciation
One request... on a future video, please consider covering false harmonics. Natural harmonics a great start, of course. 😉
Cheers Sir!
Cool stuff Scott I've been trying to get efficient with sliding harmonics on fretless
The greatest sound! Tricky but worth it.
@@joarnold448 he has some interesting videos, but it's so over produced
How do you get the harmonics to sound so clean?
Hi Scott. I'm a guitarrist that plays on Drop C# but intend to buy a 7 and then an 8 string guitar. I bought a 5 String Bass. Wich note i let on Low B with my Drop C# tunning? Thanks!
Scott- Any plans for the meta-verse? AI lessons in my home space?
What happened, new favorite gear Trickfish now? ;-) Did you play the Trickfish amps on your Vanderkley cabs?
Just saying, I wouldn’t do that weird editing thing that was done when you showed pino paladini playing the harmonics, buecause you showed in context for like half a second and then you replayed just the harmonics 50 times which kinda negated the pint of showing it in context.
Yo Scott! namaskar sir!
God Jaco
the best bass teacher in youtube, ---- > Scott
I think Scott has absorbed a bit of Davie504 in the editing department.
Not just Scott but there are loads of people on youtube using Davie504 aditing ideas.
Am I the only bass player that detests that guy’s channel
@@caleblightfoot6397 even tho the memes can get annoying, his playing is still really good and I enjoy it
@@caleblightfoot6397 yes :p
it's not just davie but also borrowing from Adam Neely's lick intro (only Scott switches it up thank god)
where to get that glove ? I need one.. I play just an hour and new strings are not new anymore..
Great Video!
What is the name of the song at 3:00?
Louis Litt it’s “who do you think I was” from John Mayer
Can u do a lesson on stuff that can be heard amongst the shrill noise of your band playing. I like harmonics but I might as well be playing nothing sometimes. I can't even heat that shit from right in front of my amp. Advice?
Make a video: "open strings possibilities in every key"
Also, 4th and 9th harmonics are the same. :D Great trick to play YYZ ;)
But 4ths and 9ths aren’t even the same pitches...
You look like one of the personalities from split and it's fucking with me lol. good stuff!
0:45 I laughed so hard, why xD
How to work out what notes the harmonics are?
We could use some links to the examples you're using.
Who is the guy in the beginning of the video?
If you did a full portrait of Tracy tutorial I would love you. There’s multiple tutorials for the first riff, but there’s no good ones that cover more of the song
you'll probably won't read this since it's such a long time ago you've posted this
But if you do I have a question regarding bending harmonics
In the video titled Pino Palladino bass Dominic Miller guitar Manu Katché drums One Shot Not 2011 Rush Hour 2:06 Pino triggers a jawdrop in Dominic Miller when he bends a harmonic glissando from an A to C back to an A
The only way I could imagine him doing that is bending the neck backwards but that's ridiculous right?
I curious to know your take on this?
as jaco said...don't follow the shapes. learn what and where the notes are, you'll be able to do so much more with harmonics!
almost the whole chromatic scale is there, except for e-flat and b-flat
Skip to 1.40
that first one sounds like a dominant b10 sound to me
I subscribed to the website three days ago for one month and it was ok at first. But it’s been two days now that it seems broken down. The page keeps charging again and again and again but nothing never happens. Am I the only one?
Hol up. Phil Mann didnt include these shapes on the harmonics course.
Also Tapped Harmonics are awesome. Billy Sheehan does that a lot. And also if you are stuck in a rut, try using a capo on your bass. And a capo is grate for transforming some slap lines and some chordal playing as well.
Never seen anyone play with a glove like that. I'm assuming it serves a purpose right? Perhaps less slide noise and consistent dry fingers?
He has a neurological condition with his hand and the glove helps with that
try DR FAT BEAMS Bass strings they R the best for Harmonics !!!
What is this bass called?
Sadowsky
