- Stop Rolling Your Sleeping Bags! Thats not the way they are designed to work. It's easier if you just stuff them into the stuff sack. That is why its called a "Stuff Sack." But thats only while you are using them, when its time to store them in-between trips keep them in a large cotton sack to protect your expensive insulation.

@@bryanelwell6268 I did the rolling thing for a bit and just assumed it was the right thing to do. However when I'm hunting in the mountains, I need to break down and move my gear quickly so I just ended up stuffing it into the bag. I definitely agree with taking it out of the stuff sack and letting it expand naturally in a bigger bag when not in use for a while.

Thank you, THANK YOU so much for saying this here to a broad audience! People just outright refuse to believe me when I tell them both things, to not roll it up when packing and to not store it compressed. Things I'm hearing are like "I don't have space for storing it uncompressed" - like you'd rather ruin your equipment than freeing up a space in your closet? Same thing goes for self inflating matresses, btw, don't store those compressed, put them inflated behind your couch!
Unfortunately manufacturers of sleeping bags on the cheaper side don't give you that wide storage sacks with the bag. You can use a clothes hanger instead, preferably a wood or plastic one, not wire.
The background of this: if you roll your sleeping bag you'l stress the insulation material over and over in the same spot the same direction. Especially with fibre that's a problem, they break and don't keep you that warm anymore.
This even applies to tents, you can stuff those, too. And that's what people most certainly refuse to do, because they just think I'm lazy and chaotic. ;-)
A spare pillow case is also a good long term storage solution. Our sleeping bag storage is a mix mash of draw string bags and pillow cases.
I always tried to roll it up… and it never seemed to work. Thank You for this simple fix ☺️

Stuffer during the season I’m using it, then roll it when I store it for winter. So glad more companies like Nemo and BA are actually telling people to stuff instead of roll now.
A net laundry bag also works for storage 😀

Great advice! I have one summer sleeping bag in decent size bag and can roll it. Recently I got a warmer sleeping bag in even smaller bag and can't roll it. I even struggled to remove it from bag for the first time. Stuffing is a challenge as well and I get 25% more volume than was originally. Can't do it better in a field conditions. I have to find a bigger bag, so it is less frustrating.

I never use my sleeping bag stuff sack. I just shove it down in my backpack or stuff it in the sleeping bag compartment if I'm using a backpack that has one.
My synthetic bag came rolled when I bought it- is this any indication that it should be rolled instead of stuffed? I’m guessing most sleeping bags come rolled though, probably for presentation.
I doesn’t hurt it to be rolled. It just isn’t as easy to pack it up. I think most of mine came rolled too. I stuff them all.
I’ve gotten a couple down bags from cottage vendors, they both came stuffed in the sack. My one big brand synthetic came rolled. Probably just easier for a machine to roll it to get it in the stuff sack on an assembly line
Yes, this most likely was for presentation. Stuff your synthetic bag and it will live longer!

Moreover, you don't need a stuff sack, just stuff into the backpack.
Try that with a coleman heritage sleeping bag. Good luck getting it into the original bag.

Keep insulation compressed for too long and it has a tendency to want to stay that way. Ruining insulation. Think of it like creasing paper. Once it’s creased it’s really hard to go back.

Yes. Both synthetic and down is better stuffed unless the manufacturer specifically recommends rolling.

What about tents, flys, and footprints? Should I just stuff those in their stuff sacks too? Because I do stuff my quilts but I still fold and roll my tents/flys/footprints nicely. Honestly I would still fold my fly and footprint nicely to keep the wet/dirty sides off of the dry sides, but I wouldn’t mind stuffing the tent body.

Hey man, is there a brand thats the smallest and lightest for affordable mummy bags? Most I've had take up too much room
I just bought the Kelty cosmic 20 down bag and a 10L compression sack and that thing is the smallest sleeping bag I’ve ever owned granted it’s my first “expensive” sleeping bag but still it freed up so much space in my pack.
It's less about the brand and more about the materials. Down is obviously the best choice for light weight and compressibility, but the type of down also matters, e.g., an 800 fill power down bag will weigh less and compress more than a 550 fill power bag.
Sierra Designs and Kelty both make good quality, affordable down bags. Not sure what Kelty uses, but Sierra Designs uses mainly duck down, which is cheaper than goose down because it has that weird duck smell, but it works just fine and comes in a range of different fill powers.
I would stay away from the cheap Amazon specials because they lie. Naturehike has adamantly defended their fill power claims, though, so they might be okay.

Depends on the tent. You can do it with nylon or polyester, but not with DCF or Ultra TNT.
Mine is in a old pillowcase.
Nice idea in theory, but if you’re going under arctic conditions, you arctic gear. And if that stuff diesn’t get rolled, it’s going to be more than just a small inconvenience to pack, Particularly if you’re not built like a linebacker.
Does it also apply to polyester sleeping bags?
Especially to those, please stuff it to give it a longer life!
I'm pretty positive your supposed to hang them by the provided loops at the end of your sleeping bag that way it doesn't ruin the down of your bag. Definitely don't leave in a stuff bag.
The Thermarest compression sack is the lightest you can get, outside of the Dyneema ones which aren't as good. Thermarest DOESN'T SELL THEM though, you only get one when you buy one of their quilts. Extremely annoying.
This is "old magic!" I always taught folks to stuff the bag. SOOOO much easier and better for the bag in the long run.
Now...stuff or roll a tent? I know which way I prefer!
Didn't know. I've been leaving my sleeping bag rolled tight and in the bag it came in. But I wonder why manufacturers store them rolled exactly like that when for sale.
Sujonda: If it seems that your bag is losing its loft, even if you give it a good shake and fluffing, Wash out your dryer so that there’s no traces of fabric softener in it, assuming you use that stuff, and put your bag in there when it’s clean, with a dozen wall balls for half an hour. Then let it hang on the line or the clothes horse for a few hours or even a day, followed by another half hour on the no heat air fluff cycle with the wool balls. All the same, I’d be really surprised if your bag isn’t performing well if you’ve had it for years, have stored it rolled up, and have had no problems.
@@daphneraven6745 I'm not having any problems with either sleeping bag I have. I haven't used either all that much and was just commenting about how manufacturers store them.
Anything down or synthetics in the 2lb range I'll stuff.
The 5lb bags from Big 5 won't fit in their stuff sacks unless I roll them or spend the $ on a proper stuff sack that costs as much as the bag.
When I get bored, I take 1" strap and buckles and make my own straps to keep them rolled (or carrying straps for surfboards and skiis)

You don’t have to hang it but it is best to store it uncompressed like in a large cotton sack. Hanging works too. Just as long as it’s uncompressed

Sorry, that's just plain wrong. Many sleeping bags are designed to be rolled since stuffing can damage the chambers. General rule of thumb is: down bags need to be rolled and fiber bags stuffed (because folding before rolling can damage long fibers). Also: rolling is like 100 times easier than stuffing.

@@arob_ i am volunteering as a boyscout leader for over a decade. When hiking with the small kids they always need help stuffing their sleeping bags. That's why I may have stuffed much more than a thousand sleeping bags in my life. I tell you, rolling is so much easier. It's just an easy process of a few motions that takes a few seconds and then the bag fits into the stuffsack. Stuffing on the other hand will always be a bad fit, takes forever and puts a lot of strain on the fabrics.
