What are the essential action movies from India that I need to add to my watchlist?
Pardon the long comment, but there are a lot of these from different Indian film industries.
Some recommendations from Tollywood (Telugu):
There are 3 films from the same director that made RRR.
1: Eega - It's kind of a meme film the director did as a challenge of not having a hero for a main lead. It's a fun watch.
2: Baahubali 1 & 2 (they're essentially a single film in 2 parts). This is essentially Indian LoTR. It also has the same actor who played the bounty hunter in this.
There's another great director Prashanth Neel, he made 3 great films:
1: KGF 1 & 2 - This isn't really Telugu, but Kannada (the director is Telugu), it's essentially Scarface, with a minor Mad Max vibe to it).
2: Salaar - I don't know how to explain this one, but it's the best work of the director & considered the best Indian action film of 2023.
From Kollywood (Tamil) side:
The best ones in Action will be the Lokesh Kanagaraj (that's the director's name) Universe, aka LCU:
1: Kaithi - Assault on Precinct 13, combined with Mad Max. A fairly great film.
2: Vikram Hitlist - A spiritual sequel to a late 80's film (which is unnecessary to watch for this). If you're into Expendables like stuff, this is great.
3: Leo - An official freemake of A History Of Violence (the original comic, not the film), which I honestly like more than the Hollywood version. It's great for just action alone.
From Malayalam side (Mollywood), they're mainly story based films so the action isn't usually that good, but they do have some good ones. I recommend starting with Aavesham. It's a Gangster Dramedy, it's honestly great fun watch.
From Bollywood, the Hindi speaking side:
We don't really have many good action films for a while, the best I can give is:
1: Kill - This is a recent one, it's in theaters rn, tho I heard it's also on Vudu. It's basically an Indian attempt at Raid films.
2: Animal - This isn't primarily an action film, but it's more of a Tarantino-esque, character drama, so the main great action scenes happen in the first half, after that there's barely any action until the near climax of the film. There's also post-credit scenes.
3: Jawan - The story is a bit meh, but the action & OST is surprisingly nice.
Hey Sully, what’s your favorite movie where the villain becomes the hero?
This is the type of list I was looking for, thank you! You've given me a ton to add to my watchlist!
@@SullyStreams
Happy to Help, there are more but these should be good for a start.
Bro....Watch Bahubali , Salaar ...by the same actor .. incredible world building and action
The lack of accessibility affects the viewing experience a lot, it seems. As an Indian, to us, the characters like Ashwattama and others are already very well established in the epics, so it's like revisiting the stories that we've all grown up with. The movie really didn't have to dwell much into developing them for us to relate to them. I would love to know how different the experience was for those from outside India.
This is definitely the feeling I got while I was watching the movie. I was thinking that all of these figures are already well known to the Indian audience, so why would they spend a lot of time explaining the ins and outs if it's obvious? Puts someone like me at a disadvantage for sure, but I'm willing to do the homework after the fact!

The movie was absolutely cool
Telugu cinema at its peaks
Yeah, they get the views.
Glad you really dug the film! I can't wait to see where they go from here. Thanks for watching the review!
The fact is that those from the west and other foreigners who are nitpicking about the VFX, effects, CGIs, etc should know the massive difference between the budgets of Hollywood and these movies and even a lot smaller part of the already small budget actually goes to the effects here. Still the Indians are managing to do what we call a visual spectacle. That is where the actual credit lies ! Imagine if they had a hollywood equivalent budget, what kind of things they could have done ! The 'ability' here actually deserves praises.
Completely agree with you, which is why I made sure to bring attention to how the movie looks better than some American blockbusters with much bigger budgets. I can't imagine the effects that would be possible if this movie had a similar amount of money to play with!
@@SullyStreams Yes. And funnily this is the exact situation with their space technology (you know if you are keeping tracks of the events). Indians are managing to do spectacles with their budget which is a fraction of NASA's budget (even smaller than the budget some hollywood blockbusters). A wonderful parallelism if you think about it.
Kalki is running as a mega blockbuster in Canada the craze is sureal my perisan german gf and her sister loved the movie we saw this it in Toronto..I loved it and I can confirm Prabhas is truly pan global superstar of cinema from india.. loved your review and the movie deserves the winning streak of accolades and praises from all corners..
I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I do wish there was more singing and dancing than the one number. There were some very interesting ideas presented in the film overall. The fact that it ended on a cliffhanger really kinda bothered me, if only because I didn't expect it.
I actually dug the cliffhanger, but I had kind of heard beforehand that they were setting up their own cinematic universe so it didn't feel out of place. Do you watch a lot of Indian movies, any favorites? Thanks for watching, dude!
@@SullyStreams They certainly created a big world in which to play, and it should be interesting to see what types of characters will show up. I do watch a lot of Indian movies. If you like action, check out the Dhoom series. There is more singing and dancing in them but the action is pretty top notch. I got others too if you are interested.

It's a pure entertainment of insane action!! 🔥 Highly recommended for you as you're a hardcore action lover!
The epic thing in the movie is the Mahabharata epic. If you know the lore those scenes will give you chills.
Mahabharata is the longest poem in the world the story is so vast and epic even today Indian directors couldn't make it a reality.
Kalki is literally a Good Movie...!! I watched it...i am from Romania 🇷🇴...
After RRR, Baahubali 1 and 2 are a must. Directed by SS Rajamouli (RRR director) and Kalki hero (bounty hunter Prabhas). Baahubali is the highest-grossing movie in Indian history. You have to watch it since you asked for recommendations. Then you can watch EEGA by SS Rajamouli, it is a crazy movie where the hero dies and turns into a fly for revenge (not a spoiler)
Kill is playing in theaters right now in the US

**RRR and its Connection to Ancient Hindu Scriptures**
The film "RRR" draws significant parallels to the Ramayana, an ancient Hindu scripture. Many elements and themes in the movie are related to the Ramayana, resonating deeply with Hindu audiences.
**Kalki Avatar**
The concept of the Kalki Avatar is akin to the anticipated return of Jesus Christ for Hindus. According to Hindu belief, Kalki is prophesied to appear at the end of the current age, known as Kali Yuga, to restore righteousness. This prophecy is detailed in the Mahabharata and the Kalki Purana.
**Parallels to Tretayuga and Lord Krishna's Birth**
In the movie, there is a scene where Sumiti escapes carrying "God" in her womb amidst fire. This echoes the story from the Tretayuga, the third age in the cycle of time, during the birth of Lord Krishna. In the ancient tale, the demon King Kansa killed seven newborns. Then, a miracle allowed Vasudeva, Lord Krishna's father, to escape from prison with divine assistance, crossing a river that miraculously parted. This scene in the movie brings to mind that significant moment from the scriptures.
RRR is Fictional Movies but Based on Real Life Character.
Bro Krishna is from dwapara yuga treta is second one

Once you are ok with it watch Bahubali 1 and 2
Prabhas and Rajamouli Magnum Opus which started all these big budget movies for us .
We Telugu people restricted our budgets max to 80 Crore Indian rupees before Bahubali.
People compare this movie to dune but the fact that the shooting of this movie started even before dune ( 2021) and delayed for the serval times. BTW. This movie based on hindu scriptures ❤️❤️
Kalki 2898 has the best VFX that Indian cinema has ever seen.
Darling Prabhas ❤
suggest you see Mahabharata summary videos to fully grasp the depth of this movie. most Bharatiya have grown up listening to it so we could easily understand what’s going on the screen and why(eg why Ashwathama shown so large, strong and used grass as weapon: bec people in that yuga were taller, stronger and could manipulate any set of atoms into anything else. he has a curse to be immortal).
then you will realise that star wars and this movie are totally different. another example being that I saw people in cinema pray 🙏 when Krishna appeared on screen so you can imagine the religious and emotional significance of this movie that hits the hindu audience whenever a character came on screen or did any powerful action.
As a Telugu person ur channel name is "omg 😂 i can't say anything " Good work "sully"

Great Review...Loved it❤
Kalki is not a fictional character. The movie is a work of fiction but Kalki Avatar is the 10th and final incarnation of Lord Vishnu. You need to watch Mahabharat all episode to understand it fully. It's hard core Sanatan Dharm
movie relates to indian ancient history not dune, it have its own set and feel
Hope this helps in understanding. from India.
It draws from the events at the end of the epic Mahabharata and the Mahabharata war in which the previous Avatar of Vishnu or Krishna is present as the charioteer and projects it to the next or 10th and final Avatar of Vishnu that is Kalki and to the imagined events of his birth at the end of Kali Yuga or the Age of Darkness. As per ancient Indian scriptures Kaliyuga starts with death of Krishna and ends with Kalki who destroys darkness and restores balance to the world and creation. Comparing it with anything else except a few stylisations is missing the point.
If you really want to get the context read a little into at least the Mahabharata and the concept of yuga though at most places you will find wrong idea of timelines.
The Character of Aswathhama (old man) played by Amitabh Bachhan is a character of Mahabharata who was cursed with immortality for his crime of killing unborn children in the mothers womb. Yes in Hindu tradition immortality is a curse as it prevents you from renewing yourself. Aswathhama lives through 6000 yrs to protect the unborn child that is destined to be the 10th Avatar Kalki and be released of his curse of immortality and bringing his Karma full circle.
Madhava is another name for Avatar Krishna.
If there is anything else you want to know of the scriptural or historical/ Puranic context pl do ask. Yes Mahabharata and Puranas are part of history in the Dharmic tradition and most Indians believe this to be true in parts if at times not whole owing to distortions of time.
loved the movie superbb..
Glad you loved it!
Perfect review 😁
Thanks so much for checking out the video!
Appreciate you being honest! This is a problem with telugu industry and the hero worshipping in the industry defends any sort of criticism.
That happens in the US too, so I totally get it. Always want to make sure I’m honest with all of my movie reviews. Thanks for checking out the video!
YOU SHOULD WATCH KILL ,released after kalki 2898 AD
Oh trust me, I will definitely be checking that one out!
The storyline is deeply connected with the Hindu mythology, based on centuries or probably thousands of years old scriptures. Hence this movie is another level of satisfying thought-provoking experience for the Indian audience who are aware of the Mahabharata, other than or rather than just the action or VFX.
The de-aging vfx was not good at all. It looked like a video game character whenever he spoke and the eyes were ridiculously large looking like a cartoon. They really should have gone with red chillies (Indian vfx company) for that part instead of DNEG.
Kalki 2898 AD is the pride of Indian Cinema and Telugu Cinema. One word review: MINDBLOWING.
Do not miss it at any cost.
I hope Kalki surpasses every Indian movie produced so far including RRR, Dangal, Jawan, Pathaan, Baahubali 2, KGF 2, Animal and becomes the most successful Indian film without inflating box office collections. Absolutely mindblowing except some unnecessary cringe masala and cringe comedy with Bhairava in the first half. Kamal Haasan part is pure horror. The way they have imagined landscapes, environments, weapons, vehicles, powers, Mahabharata scenes is truly exceptional and spectacular. My one suggestion to Nag Ashwin is to explore the Complex society and the outside world more in depth because on the surface it looks like everyone is doing well enough even though they are starving for food, water, clean oxygen and they have just stuck some neon signs randomly on Indian alleyways and streets because that's how cyberpunk movies do it. Anyone who says it is merely a copy of Star Wars, Dune, Mad Max, MCU deserve to drink Kali's tears lol. Excited for Kalki 2 more than I ever was for Brahmastra 2. Prabhas and Deepika Padukone are good but Amitabh Bachchan is the MVP. Wow. Disha Patani's part is simply waste. Roxxie could have still been used to show Bhairava the luxuries and abundance of the Complex without that cringe song. Also, unnecessary writing mistakes like superhuman Ashwatthama suddenly not being able to lift Sumathi up should not happen. I wish they would give Shree Krishna better look. No yellow angavastram or armor or jewels or mukut. Just a white cloth and a head band makes him look like a Greek hero. Personally I would have loved to see Shree Krishna blue instead of fair-skinned or dark-skinned because that's how we all grew up watching him in all images.
Deserves to be watched atleast twice.
PS. For non-Indians and Karna (son of Sun God Surya) fans watching this, Karna was not more powerful than Arjuna. Karna is an antagonist and an adharmi in the Mahabharata who was jealous of Arjuna and committed many evil deeds and suffered for his karma and choosing the wrong side against the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Shree Krishna. Period. But he is not a cheeranjeevi (immortal) like Ashwatthama. How has he reborn or reincarnated remains to be seen. Note that according to some, Karna pushing Arjuna's chariot back is a fake story and Ashwatthama surrendered the mani himself.
Had great fun while watching this in theatres

Otherwise the list is huge and if you choose the right ones, you're up for a ride.

@@SullyStreams it's a mixture of history, future prediction written long back + our time calculations + cultural references carried over thousands of years through our memory.
Even Indian people are not reading the actual material. So, not so easy getting an idea.
We are left with only 2 historical books for now - Ramayanam and Mahabharatam. Many managed to make Ramayanam without too many deviations and the time frame covered isn't too huge .
Mahabharatham spans over thousands of years finally reaching the Kuru Dynasty . There are so many important characters each with a distinct psychology, strength, and way of working . It is said that almost any kind of person can find a character they can relate to in the epic Mahabharatham .
There are some youtubers who researched well and give their content with references . But they haven't yet made any material in English. I am requesting those who I trust to present the explanations true to the original material. Since you will have enough time, I am sure the content will be out soon.
For a small beginning :
The war isn't the battle of gods. It's a family feud turned into war between kingdoms and only one god Sri Krishna ( Maha Vishnu ) and it's his return we are waiting for. ( This part - The Kalki Puranam is easier to find I think ) .

Salaar has its own universe .. Pushpa has its own universe ... Kantara has its own universe..Now Kalki has its own franchise .. it goes on .. we have at least 5 different franchises that running independently of each other ....they key thing that Hollywood needs to learn is that we have put in the time and effort necessary to make these movies work.. Hollywood has lost this .. they just want to repackage existing stuff ... put in the effort Hollywood ..common guys...you will see us everywhere soon if you don't catch up ...

Im Indian and I genuinely found this movie to be extremely boring. The special effects are terrible, everything is terrible. I have acquaintances in India who work for companies that work for marvel and all.
If Indian movie makers actually spent money on talent rather than marketing and actors, we could so so much better. Horrible movie. Worse movie I have watched in 2024.
