Battle of Ōrākau remembered, 160 years on

"E hoa, ka whawhai tonu mātou, āke! Āke! Āke!"
The quote has resonated throughout the years since it was defiantly said by Ngāti Maniapoto chief Rewi Maniapoto to British forces, made famous during the battle of Ōrākau in 1864. Today, thousands gathered at the site of the historical battle to remember those that lost their lives in the final fight in the Waikato War.
