Ōrākau, famed battle site - Roadside Stories

- Ōrākau, near Kihikihi, was the site of a Māori fighting pā (fortification) and a decisive 1864 battle between Māori and British troops. Although the Māori defenders, led by chief Rewi Maniapoto, lost the battle, they are remembered for their courage and their refusal to surrender.

Ngati Raukawa was lead by Te Paerata his daughter was Ahumai and his son Hitiriti Te Paerata, all present at the battle. I am descended from Hitiriti.
I am a decendant of Te Whakataute Te Huia a cousin of Rewi and a participant at the battle,I am alsoa direct decendant ofTupotahi Te Winitana also presentat the battle of Orakau .

The lines or macrons used in the word Ōrākau means you have to hold the vowel sounds. It's not running out your mouth like English words. Pronunciation is important when re-telling our stories.

I lived not far from the battle of Orakau marker when I was a young child. I was taught our NZ history but sadly much has changed in NZ and so has the offical narrative.
Lest we forget.
For many years we were only taught the victors version of our history. Its important to hear from both sides.

Who is the narrator? ... The pronunciation is weird. The Paerata whanau are Ngati te Kohera. Connected to Raukawa thru Pare te Kawa

E hoa ! .. Orākau not Ora kau .. the "a" is pronounced in a drawn out manner .. your pronunciation is hard on my ears , I am a direct decendant of the people who died at Orākau . SO please !
