  • The Netherlands is enhancing its air defense capabilities with the purchase of 22 Skyranger 30 systems, mounted on ACSV Gen 5 armored vehicles. These short-range air defense systems will be key in countering drones, helicopters, and low-flying aircraft. The Skyranger 30, developed by Rheinmetall Air Defence, features an advanced 30mm cannon and integrates short-range surface-to-air missiles. This acquisition is part of a larger European effort to strengthen air defense in response to increasing UAV threats. With delivery set for 2028, the Netherlands is positioning itself as a leader in modern mobile defense systems.

From what I understand, these 22 units are intended to provide cover for 2 combat brigades. that means each brigade 11 pieces. I understand that some people think that 22 pieces is not enough, I would say that a much larger country like Germany only orders 19. These 22 pieces, including ammunition and training, etc., cost approximately 1.35 billion euros. With these 22 units, the Netherlands has anti-drone coverage for its brigades that is five times as dense as that of a French brigade.

We get 5 units and every unit gets 4 skyranger 30 systems total 20 plus two for training. We have 3 brigades. 1.35 billion euros is for the total lifecycle including staff, ammo, rockets, maintenance, training, etc etc.
They are part of the bigger airdefence units, shorad and mrad and patriot units.

I'd like to add to that, that the CV90/35s from 43rd NL Mechanized Brigade are also capable of engaging drones and helicopters with their guns - these have been equipped with modified sights and targeting systems that enable them to do so.
Nevertheless, considering how busy the Gepards and Cheetahs (NL version) gifted to Ukraine have been and that the Iranian made Shahed drones keep on coming, 22 are most likely not enough. We'll probably run out of munitions and barrels before the enemy runs out of cheap drones and loitering munitions. I think in the long run, armed forces around the world need to think of more efficient ways to counter saturation attacks.
I've heard that South Koreans had been experimenting doing so with 155mm shot/HE frag grenades, but haven't seen any follow on reports about that.

@ But the Netherlands has contracted also Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to deliver NASAMS and NOMADS air defense systems. And for the real work we have the Patriots

You are talking nonsense, 22 units is 7 more than the german army provided for the entire Bundeswehr. In short: the dutch army has more skyrangers than the German army.

As long as the EU orders their new systems in the EU and not the USA it's all good.

22, way too less. And why not on the boxer undercarriage? And why the 30mm variant instead pf the 35 mm which is compatible with the CV9035NL. So many questions.

The Skyranger 30 is a short range air defence turret system developed by Rheinmetall Air Defence AG (formerly Oerlikon). As far as I know, this system is only available in a 30mm version and not in a 35mm version. why not the boxer? This one is more lightly armored.

Thats more than the german army bought.. what are you blabbling about. this is a entirely different system than the CV90 is, its a different gun. Different purpose. There is no need at all to get the same calibre. The boxer is way too big as a vehicle for its purpose and you want your close air defense units on tracks so they can follow the armoured units like the CV90's, PZH2000s and tanks. It's very logical.

@@tvanb8729Yet we have seen that tracked vehicles get immobilised quite easily.... Yet wheeled vehicles keep driving even if more wheels are damaged...the skyranger 35 also has a longer range.... Boxer would be ideal for this since we already use the boxer, and using the 35 mm would also simplify logistics aswell....

@@RuiseMuisskyranger is available in botg 30 or 35 mm

@@B.Krol.050you dont seem to understand that this is a conpletely different product and there is no option for 35mm since it entires a whole different kind of ammunition and has a different design philosophy. Next to that there is no logistical argument because there are plenty of different calibers in use. And again, no the boxer is not a better platform, tracked vehicles are more mobile and are better in keeping up with the spear of the attack.

Hey Robovoice: it is not Rain metal, but Rhine metal (Rhein in German is pronounced exactly as Rhine in English). Just like Rafale is not pronounced as Rafael (an angel) but as Raf-ahl (is a gust of wind - pronounce the last syllabe as in Roald Dahl). So please adapt your spelling in order to get the pronunciation right. We're a distinguished audience you know? ;)
