- Service High School Navy JROTC cadet, Seaman Apprentice Taylor Engstrom intervened and by doing so almost certainly prevented a death of one of his classmates. His teacher decided Engstrom should be honored for showing courage. Watch the video to see the full story on how this young man has affected so many lives.

This is horrendous. The bearings on some of the cadets were just awful. I've seen freshmen who are not on the drill team have better bearings than these cadets. I also saw one cadet were her Class A instead of Class B. Loss of uniformity.

In my JROTC program, they wouldent even be able to stand in formation if they are wearing the wrong uniform
I know that in Air Force JROTC, there’s a difference between the gold valor award and the silver valor award, where silver is that you save a life at no expense of your own, while gold is awarded to one who saves a life risking their own in the process
I’m pretty sure that’s Navy JROTC. It’s the ranks and uniform, along with the covers

The highest award a Navy JROTC cadet can receive is the Meritorious Achievement Ribbon, for which the act of valor required isn't specified like in Air Force. The original comment is correct, as the Gold Valor award is earned by saving a life at the risk of your own.
Yeah. In AFJROTC, there’s a difference between “Gold Valor” and “Silver Valor”. I’m not sure how other types of JROTC do but, I just did AFJROTC this year.

TJ Lavin it's a high school, not a cadet corp, there's a big difference from performance between the 2, in my cadet corp i had 9 officers all served, and also the RCM was 20 years old and joined when he was 12, the performance will be so different from something like my corp to s high school were it's only 1 navy officer and about 70 kids, its s lot of work and takes time, they aren't rushed it seems LOL
i was a cadet for 4 years, left as a Sargent, through those 4 years i had 3 friends that wanted to take there lives but i talked to them every single day till 12 or 4 in the morning, making sure they were fine, congrats on this kid for getting that medal, i know how it feels to be able to know someone is still on this earth cause of you, it's a great feeling with or without earning something from it

Good job to that cadet. Im a cadet from A13, Hawaii and I gotta say, thats a big award he was given and he did something great. However, in no way of disrespect but their unit doesn't look too sharp.

Lol, I'm in NJROTC and my NSI is a retired DII MGySgt. I guess it really depends who your instructors are. We get yelled, but mostly just because of drill.

I'm in the Civil Air Patrol and I think that they should be learning how to stand at attention. Their eyes were going all around the place and they were making movements with their mouths lol.

In Army. You have so many higher ranks looking at if you fidget to much you get told to stand straight, if you look around to much you constantly get told to look straight ahead...

This makes me very proud to be a 3rd year cadet in AFJROTC
I started high school during the Vietnam War era. The year the war ended was also the year the first class attended our newly built high school. That year they shut down the ROTC program in our high school and recruiting was banned from our high school. The superintendent's son had been killed the previous year by friendly fire and he was not happy with the military from that point on. There has not been an ROTC program there since.
I remember the year prior to my graduation there were two M.P. searching school grounds for an AWOL soldier and the principle called the police who escorted them off school grounds and to the town line and informed them that all future military incursions into town land had to be arranged before hand with the police department. Back then there were a lot of jurisdictional disagreements. Military people just were not liked or welcomed in our town. They even banned recruitment in our town. I left that town the day I graduated and haven't been back since.
Yep, the Vietnam War. It really created fear in a lot of families. The kill rate was high , PTSD became common for many veterans or widows, and many saw it as a waste, for fear that has risen because of Stalin and his ideology of Communism. But today there is a repeat of that, however, more and more people are becoming too overconfident or too overweight with fear. This time it is from the Middle East. But we can overcome as Jesus has overcome the grave.
I'm nto going to criticize your principal for that. My high school was very selective about the kind of recruiting allowed. We wouldn't let Army or USMC recuiters in, because we were afraid they'd lie to the kids. The Iraq war was raging and our kids were the "troubled" kind that would be used as cannon fodder. We were more than happy to have Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard recruiters, but they didn't want u-our kids. Those three branches want educated, smart, hardworking, motivated people who can learn skills.
A lot of people here really like to talk smack but, I'd really like to see how some of your units preform. It's really not about how military you look; It's about the character you build and the experiences you walk away with. Despite being in ALASKA, this is a quite large unit and I think they got a lot going for them.

PinkKangElo As far as tips, they will teach you everything you need to know. However my advice....be a leader, lead other by example and always seek more knowledge. Knowledge is opportunity.

PinkKangElo I’m an officer in my AFJROTC unit, you’ll love it. Be yourself but be formal, you’ll meet great people and get involved for sure. This is only my second year and I’m an officer. As long as you get involved and get to know everyone you’ll be an amazing cadet, truuuuuussssss me

Thats cool. I was a first responder to a fire. I ensured safety of 48 personnel and mitigated 2.5 million in damages while deployed and didn't recieve jack for it but a coin.

Those are actually parachute jump wings and he has the Army Commendation Medal as well. Additionally, he has either Army aviator or aircrew member wings. I can't make out if it is a circle or shield in the center.
Probably prior enlisted Army.

Not trying to be rude or anything, but my commander would have made these cadets speak louder than what they did. In my opinion, this was absolutely horribly executed and I wish I could’ve seen better. Maybe I’m being too picky, because my school’s Navy JROTC is ranked number one in the nation as I’m writing this, or it’s actually correct.

That's the Coast Guard....They don't have sergeants. Also you never lock eyes with your guy inspecting you. You always look past him.
He's obviously a freshman or it's his first year in the program because he doesn't have a service star on his uniform, and we don't report in or greet anymore, they address you and then you speak. You speak only when spoken to

High School ROTC, when I was a cadet in the early 1970s, did not have a medal designated for saving a life, heroically or otherwise. Consequently, when a cadet saved a life (pulled a child out of traffic), he only got a pat-on-the-back and I think his name was in the newspaper. There was no "saved a life" ribbon or medal at that time. Nor was there one for scholastic merit for the cadet who had an article published in a national journal (something having to do with military history).

Ok this is coming from me, I’m on a competitive drill team. But these cadets need better bearing and way better commanders. My commanders will yell, my commanders will get in our face. They need commanders like that.

Same. I agree with that statement. I'm in MCJROTC, and just got promoted to Cadet Sargent 2 weeks ago. Motivation is extremely important. Sounding off is something that not all Cadets can do,, but that's why Motivation is important. It also depends on your instructors,, and how they operate. If your instructors get in your face,, YOU NEED to sound off, but If they don't, try and endure other challenges. Motivation is key to a program like Jrotc.

During inspection for NJROTC you’re supposed to have your covers on indoor, but yeah that bearing isn’t great.

I know this has nothing to do with it but the fact the commander has a anime picture someone drew him and mind you it is drawn well shows what kind of guy he is.
Just last year for me I was a flight seargent for AFJROTC and a fellow flight seargent had a stroke on me on lunch and I took charge and got a nurse out there and what not but he ended up in hospital with heart problems. If I wasn't there my fellow seargent would not be here today

Three years later, I do this very often. Everyone's depressed. Staying up until three AM on the phone with someone waiting for the police to arrive is a bimonthly occurrence. I do live in the Bible belt and most of my friends have been rejected by their families though.

I Am an AFJROTC Cadet Airman Basic.
Im the slowest and weakest member of my flight.
But this was absolutely Stunning. And when i say Stunning, I mean in a Horrified way.
There is Little to NO Effort into this inspection. I am the lowest rank you could be in AFJROTC, So seeing these people who call themselves Cadets Cadets was painful to see. The bearing was terrible, There is a Difference between Bearing and just straight up avoiding eye contact. Judging by the uniforms, its safe to say they would never be told to be at ease. They're stances are Terribly bad.
And especially when the Commander used First Names. Where is this school? because they really need to fix up their program. They're too timid. What happens when you throw them into the real thing (If they choose to go)? Its not gonna be anything Like this and they defiantly wont be ready.
Freshman Btw, So if they're Freshman or Older, they have No excuses

Stuff like this meant the world to us when I was a JROTC cadet in the early 2000s. 9/11 happened and patriotism was at an all time high.
Sadly we don't seem to have much patriotism anymore. It's okay to be dissatisfied and wanting to improve your country, that's what patriotism is.
Today it seems the new generation has so much national and individual self loathing. I'm not saying you need to blindly follow your government.
That's just idiotic.
I am saying that a hyper focus on our bad history hyper exceeds the good aspects. Yes our nation has done horrific acts on minorities, ordinary citizens and foreign civilians.
But despite all of that we have flourished into one of the effective forces for world peace, and overall improvement of our human existence.
. Since the US obtained superpower status after WW2, wars have been incredibly few and far inbetween. The human population has doubled since we became a superpower, medicine has advanced and the overall life expectancy has risen by literally decades.
Things that are normal today were only a far reaching fantasy 100 years ago. We went from the Wright brothers being the first to fly to landing a man on the moon some 60 years later.
Prior to this similar achievements were done by the British, French, Prussians, Belgians and further back the Romans.
That’s got to be a regiment or battalion not a company.
