An officer might not go front lines but officers do have important jobs, you can argue that officers are in control of more valuable assets, like a battalion or a aircraft carrier or a 90 million dollar jet instead of an enlisted person who is in control of a squad or some aircraft parts.

“Get ready for veterans to hate you.” As a former cadet, I concur. We have a plethora of vets that live around where I go to college and upon meeting them, I could just feel the absolute disgust they have for the word “Cadet”. I mean, the majority of them have had former cadets lead them as Lieutenants in the past, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

It makes sense. Most people have at least a few complaints about their bosses in civilian life. Only they usually have at least a little direct experience with the more difficult aspects of the job (that they seemingly completely forgot about) and in most jobs you won't die if they screw up in very many cases.
I can see why a friend dying because someone fresh out of school above us in rank despite it being his first time would be infuriating, especially if I had enough experience to know (or at least feel like I knew) how it would turn out.
Then there's just straight up military structure.

The other option is to do those four years using your GI bill and TA. Then go to OCS. Sometimes it's a little more beneficial this way. If you have a field that is direct commission. Nursing is a good example for this one.

If you're not green to gold then you're basically getting a $400 a month stipend to show up to ROTC 16 days a month (3 days a week PT. Class 1-2 days. And lab). If you already got a full scholarship or was Natty Guard and can get your tuition paid for it could be more time efficient to just do OCS.

It’s not leaving behind the old social life, there’s a possibility of creating new ones by cleaning the space for it, and it may be found inside a new club/community. It’s indeed possible to outgrow people. But what truly matters for are very few emotionally mature friends outside the club. Because these people value boundaries in nurturing lots of life areas we have which what keeps us busy. Authentic relationships are a rare gem. Few can only have this in friendships. :)

All this varies from branch to branch of course. I'm an Air Force Cadet, and they have higher academic standards than the others. Non of the branches have low standards, however. At least for the AFROTC program, the type 7 is the lowest level scholarship, covering full in-state tuition and fees with a monthly stipend amounting to no more than $18,000 a year. The Type 1 is full-ride pretty much wherever you want and the Type 2 is like the Type 7 but has private school options. I got the type 7 with good writing sections, a 1280 SAT, 29 ACT, and a 3.94 GPA with 15 units of community college courses. If you know you were an outstanding student in high school then you should have a decent shot, but you have to want to serve your country and be willing to make the commitment. ROTC courses are real classes, you'll have them every semester, and it'll mean you have to work extra hard to get your normal coursework done. Don’t let people fool you. As ROTC cadets we learn the EXACT same material that enlisted members learn in boot camp. We actually learn it better because we have the ability to go more in depth with the material because of the length of time we are given. I don’t know why anyone says ROTC is easy because we are up at 0500 three days a week doing PT sessions. We take an APFT every month to ensure we stay in shape. We have field training exercises where we test the material we learn, like patrols, land navigation, and offensive attack formations. So whoever says ROTC is a terrible idea or the easy way out has obviously never stepped foot in a program and are just passing on the rumors they have heard.

Random Ninja I'll tell you as someone in the military... I got a fucked up ankle (happened in the Army) that may need a second surgery because it's not getting any better. They're telling me I could get med boarded. And I'm a POG. I'm intelligence. Yet, I could be medically discharged. Point of the matter being, no matter what your job is in the military, you're a warfighter first, even if you have a desk job. Army and Marines especially, even if you have a desk job, you still gotta be ready to pick up a rifle and rucksack and go on patrol or some shit. So health is taken serious. I've seen people get discharged back when I went through training because they had asthma. Military is very picky about physical capabilities because, as a team, every person has an assigned task. And if that task can't be complete because that person is unable to do it, the entire unit can be jeopardized. Nothing personal to you, just the military saying, "Hey, man. Thanks for your support and will to serve with us. But we just don't want you to get yourself or others killed." Even if it's the slightest thing, it could affect your effectiveness. Just how the military works.

Some colleges are complete jokes and others are pretty high speed. At the University of Kentucky it’s the biggest east of the Mississippi and it’s pretty high speed compared to others. PT 3 mornings a week at 05, a 2 hour field lab on Wednesday and a classroom class like a normal class throughout the week. You have Field Trainings and get opportunities at schools like enlisted do, such as Airborne/Air Assault, pathfinder, etc.

As a Vietnam combat veteran, I can assure you the purpose of the military is to find and kill the enemy, by any means necessary, and not to provide "adventure". This is a terribly immature video. The whole purpose of an officer core is about defending freedom, the constitution, and the survival and dominance of the greatest nation on the face of planet earth....a nation with a flag worth dying for. If the reason you join ROTC is free tuition, and to "be cool", the officer corp does not need you. And you "don't get it". Being a citizen soldier is an American tradition. It is about being a man. Not about standing up jumping and clapping hands in delight. In case it isn't perfectly clear, the job of an officer is to stand up under fire, in from of his men, say "follow me", and take the first bullet, if that be god's will. To go without food until the last one of your subordinates has taken nourishment. To spend hours in physical training to be able to run longer, be stronger, and have more stamina than your subordinates. To SET THE EXAMPLE ! To have morals above and beyond the ordinary. To never lie, cheat, or act to harm others for personal gain. To be a man of your word. To honor the officer's code. And sometimes ordering others to be killed, and writing to their next of kin, and after the war living with nightmares over decisions you have made that unnecessarily caused a soldiers death. And the nights you think about eating the gun, when the nightmares come, which they will. The military may be a dangerous place. Visit a VA hospital and visit the men in wheelchairs, without legs. And those without eyes who can no longer see. That is part of combat. It is about risking your life for others...because, at times, SOMEBODY has to do it. The unfortunate price America pays for freedom. The military is not a video game. There are worse things in life than dying for your country. Duty, honor, country.

Sir, thank you for your service first of all. Secondly I will have to agree, this was a satire video. Harmless and meant to give a good laugh. Certainly some folks out there consider the military to be something of a game, which is not the case. Regardless this was only meant as satire. With respect to all branches of the military, as well as the ROTC and prospects. Best wishes.

OKAY FELLA I'm gonna have to ask you to take many seats and calm down. The video is just for fun and laughter and to not be taken seriously.

Reality didn’t sound so bad until he said that there’s training over the summer...

Accurate. Even at the JROTC level it is accurate.

Had a Cadet try to tell me to go to attention for him at airborne school🤣 I nearly pissed myself laughing to hard. Needless to say I didn’t go to attention. To all you cadets out there please don’t be that guy because it will not work at all🤣

My expectation is nothing like that I think of it as hard core military training camp
