Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" around Los Angeles.

I just started to oil paint, and was so confused as to how to mix in my mediums; most videos just talk about it, but doesn't show it whether to mix the medium directly into the colors or mix it into the colors. This was very helpful, thank you :)
Nerd Boy glad to be of help!
I can’t believe that at least one of the 20 to 30 artists I have worked with over the last 15 years didn’t explain what I have just seen here.
All I got was the mantra “fat over lean, thick over thin” with no instruction about how to use solvents and mediums.
Thank You so much for this revelation.
FINALLY THANK YOU! im just getting started in oil and i was so overwhelmed with all the products, not knowing what to with them, which one comes first, how to use them. Now i feel like i understand a lot better!
In my first ever intro to oil painting class my painting instructor told us “you just add more oil when you need it.” Which left me scratching my head as to know whether or not or when I even needed it if at all or just use it all the time with all the paints...so her advice was less than helpful! She was a really good artist, but not a very good teacher. I think many teachers out there have been doing their stuff for so long, they just think everyone around them knows most of what they know as well. It’s important to remember when teaching that not everyone knows what you know or knows anything at all about the topic which is why they’re there....to learn more about it.
@@Lacroix999 That is an interesting thought but I'm not sure if the teachers can approach it differently other way than asking. Because the professionals in nearly anything don't actually realize what is basic knowledge and what they need to explain, it is usually on the same level so they basically can either explain everything or nothing.
Thank you, so on point ! It literally took me ages to realize that I have to paint thinner in the beginning of a painting and to basically understand how important it is to use the opacity of colors & layers .. I seriously painted my first attempts like a viking :I
Hi
I loled...
Because that's what I did too Lol
A Viking? That's not too bad - I was painting like a Vandal!
I've legitimately been looking for a video like this that shows someone comfortably using their materials. This was a huge help!
I love the way he explains things, this is my second time watching this. He doesn't make it too complicated . Thank you.
It's amazing how rare it is to find such straightforward and clear lessons about these parts of the oil painting process. Thank you so much for this, it was exactly what I was finding so difficult to understand.
I love that you address all the things that could go wrong for a beginner. 😭🧡 Thanks a ton!
This is exactly what I needed. Your instruction is so clear and on point. Thank you so much for doing these videos!
THANK YOU! I've been dying to paint with oil paints, and I had no idea on how to mix colours or paint, this video really helped me a lot! And it was straight to the point. Thank you!😄
Fine Artist doing my first oil paint portrait for a celebrity. This helped me immensely. I think it'll only take me an hour or two to begin mastering this with your video. Thanks , you put me light years ahead of trial and error.
Finally, the best explanation I've come across. Thank you so much, Chris. You have the great ability to see things from a total beginner's point of view!
Thank you so much for sharing your video! I have decided to start oil painting because I enjoy acrylic painting so much. I am self-taught and still trying to learn all about different styles, techniques and materials. I found this extremely helpful. If that is your work and art studio in the back that is awesome! Looks amazing! Keep it up!
Thank you so much for this video! I searched for so so long for a video like this because I got truly confused with everything. I really understand it now and I truly think this video should get more appreciation. WELL DONE !!
Chantal Lenart thanks! I feel a lot of painters on UA-cam overlook simple basic tips that make all the difference.
So far you’re the best teacher I’ve found, thank you so much!!
That's the most gigantic palette I've ever seen.
Actually size does matter.
I didn’t realize it was a palette until I read the comment
Lol 😂 💕
Love huge mixing palletes lol 😉
You know what they say about artists with big palettes...
They've got more space to work with.
Thank you! I had no idea of what other people were talking about. This makes so much more sense with the visuals, I plan on making my first oil painting sometime this week or next week!
giorno Giovanna awesome! Good luck!
Thank you Paint Coach! When you picked up the Steeler mug…I knew you were going to be great! Straight forward informative demo. Headed straight to my easel to try out what you shared.
Thanks my friend, for explaining how to use mediums the fun and easy way. Am going to order linseed oil and use it every time that I paint. Many Thanks!
I attended a short course in acrylic painting in a community college here in Toronto but now I want to learn oil painting. This pandemic prevented me from attending oil painting in a classroom setting. You explained very well the use of the mediums not explained well when I go for online course at Udemy. Thank you so much, very well explained! Great teacher!
This is really informative and well structured. I think the way you're explaining and presenting the information is really great- easy to understand and feel like i learned a lot. Thank you!
I'm glad to hear you got a lot out of it! More to come!
@@paintcoach hey! looking forward to it! I was wondering if you had a video about proper ventilaion and how high that should be on our priorities based on how frequently and where we paint? If you don't have a video on it could you make one?
As a beginning oil painter this is exactly what I needed to see! Thank you!
Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate how to mix the mediums. That’s sorted out a lot of confusion for me.
Thank you for all your help in this video it’s been an amazing tuition for me you’ve open my mind it’s help at this early stage I’m at and can’t wait to try out so many test to play around with this is the best advice I have had so far I can’t thank you enough, I’ve been doing all these things wrong for quite a while so please keep these lesson going and the advice with brushes best wishes Ken
Great video. Trying oil for the first time soon and this really helped me understand how and when to use medium and solvent. 👍
Thank you!! I am trying to switch from acrylic to oils and I was struggling with the consistency of the paint. This makes more sense. I had the paint thinner but I don't have the linseed oil but will be picking some up!!
I’m about to start oil painting, as others have said, there are so many mediums out there, this video makes it so easy to understand.
Thanks 😊👍🏻
Great explanation of the basics; thanks Chris!
very precise and a most helpful explanation of how to use thinners and mediums.
Hello Chris, I had a hard time with all mediums. Thank you so very much for that video, so well explained .
Got it now! You are the Best....
I agree this was a great explanation of how and what mediums to use.
I've been out of the art world for a long time. Coming back around I'm pretty damn rusty. I've only watched a few of your videos and it's already been so helpful. Thanks!
Thank you for this! Wonderfully explained and demonstrated.
Enjoyed this video. Gave me a better understanding of which to use when. Thank you
Thank you for this video, you make things so much easier to understand painting!
this actually addresses many of the questions i had going in to this - great video.
Aaahh, i get it now and what i was doing wrong. Someone actually took the time to show how medium is mixed with instruction on thick, thin and so forth. Thanks so much!
Thank you so much for this video!! When I was oil painting in high school years ago I asked my teacher what the different oils were for in the cabinet and she told me to not worry about it 😳 I’ve learned so much from your channel!
Lindsey Allen I’m glad you’re getting a lot out of the channel! I plan on releasing more video more often! I also have a Patreon if you like long real time tutorials!
Good ol high school art class to teach you as little as possible! We weren't so lucky to have oil paint in high school. I had so much problem using acrylics and frustration my parents gifted me a complete set while in high school. My skill improved a lot.
Thanks, Coach. This was a great introduction to mediums and solvents.
Glad you enjoyed!
Very nice job on the presentation! Thanks
this was so helpful! Thank you v much. Happily subscribed!
Shona O Brien thank you! I’m working on more videos

Again thank you coach your lessons are always welcome
Just started oil painting and this video is very informative. Thank you! 😊 I purchased a new set of oil paints and they are much thicker than the first one. Now I am diving deeper into these little ho by that's getting more and more interesting (and expensive, lol).
This is what I've been looking for!!!! Thank you🖤
Glad to be of help!
Thank you for explaining it. It’s very helpful.
THANK YOU!! This helped me so much as to why I wasn’t getting the colors to come out how I wanted to lol. This is only my 4th week in my oil painting class but I had been struggling to get the colors to come out how I wanted them to. 😭😭🙏🙏thank you
Phantom Ghost707 awesome! Just keep practicing and honoring the effort and it will come.

Watching this video in March 2021 and it is a brilliant tutorial video , even for someone who has never painted in his life and is about to start at 51 yrs old
Thanks, this was really useful as someone new to oils 🙏
Thanks so much for this video & the others as well
Brilliant demonstration, thank you so much 😍
Glad it was helpful!
wow, a lot of watercolor techniques can be applied to oil paint. That's pretty cool.
So helpful!!! Thank you so much 😊
Very informative. Thank you
FINALLY!!! Someone covered the thinner/linseed conundrum for me-THANK YOU!!!
No problem!!
Paint Coach hey Man, what can I add to my oils to help them dry faster.... really appreciate you helping us new guys!!!
super helpful, thank you!
This is a great video. Very helpful, it’s just hard to see what’s going on when it’s not used in a very practical
Way. Like it would be awesome to see you super quickly paint a background, tree, leaves, then highlights or something and show how you mix it
I just realized that I have done something ridiculously wrong, I have mixed the linseed oil with the mineral spirit, cause I thought that's how they do it 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂, I am very glad I came across your video.
This has been so helpful! Thanks
You're so welcome!
Great tips! thanks👍
Super helpful thanks!
Great explanation.
I like how you'r going into details.
Great knowledge
Loved the video...right up until I saw the Steelers mug!! LOL (Ravens fan ) Just kidding you explained the uses very well, Thanks for making this video !!

Had a, "Oh! DUH!" moment watching this. Thanks for helping to connect some dots
Thanks for the helpful suggestions! Looking forward to using medium without the frustration of not knowing exactly how to use it! Keep the tips coming.
So helpful ❤️
thank you so much, you explain it so well
You're very welcome!
Now I know why my layers kept getting muddy/mixed! Thanks for the straight forward videos without all the chatting.
Thanks man, great input
No problem!
Great video!
thanks sir its really so helpful...
Most welcome
Thank you, l have just realized l have been using to much thinner instead of using a little linseed oil to get richer colours
Thank you! sooo helpful!!
Nathalie Rabearijao thanks! More to come
@@paintcoach nice!!
have been a while seeing many videos and finally i found your channel. it's so useful for beginners; information are clear and very simple thank you. i have a question I've been searching about cold medium wax and i didn't find it in my country(Egypt) so if there's a way to do it at home or buy it online plz tell me.
Great to hear you like oils because they dry slowly! Exactly why I love them. If drying is taking too long perhaps start another canvas? I would love to know your view on working a few canvases at a time, Chris?
BTW. My near vision is challenged, so I must be a natural: I don't even have to squint. : )
Mate thank you so much!
Great stuff, thanks.
My pleasure!
you the boss, boss!
Thank you!!!!
Definitely takes time, I knew about the oil layers, but controlling it is a whole different thing and it could discourage you from continuing oil painting.
