Good pro tip to buy the backpack at last! I'm also into evolving since 15 years, starting with cheap but rugged surplus stuff. Now into a mix of ultralight (backpack, tent, sleeping pad, cooking stuff, headlamp) combined with versatile remainings (swagman roll, folding mat). I highly recommend an ultralight chair like helinox zero and a folding lantern (mine is 5,5 oz / 150 g original WW1) with anti mosquito candle which makes each trip so much more enjoyable and is worth every ounce in gold 😂

Yes, be well. Keep up the good work 👏 I'm new in backpacking, I just bought a New Nemo hornet osmo UL 2p semi free standing tent trail weight of 2.1 pounds $250. Cheapest I can find.
My key...second job at REI 😂 But I love it, it is my sanity job (I teach HS). However, I am constantly helping people with packs and tents on trail. Always shop sales. All the big brands have major sales, especially Black Friday and Memorial Day. And I am all about reusing plastic bottles. Yes, lighter weight is fab, but store brands are great too and not much heavier. You don't need a second mortgage to get great gear.
Thanks for the target weights - that's good information. I am far from ultralight, but it's good to know the target weights as I upgrade things.
FYI: a sleeping bag liner makes sleeping on a sleeping pad with a quilt more comfortable. Sleeping pad materials can be uncomfortable against the skin. (or wear base layers while sleeping - yech)
32 Degree has some packable down jackets for under $40 so far, I'm happy with mine other than the sizes run small.
Picked up a no-name titanium 750ml pot off Amazon for $10 on clearance. Probably not as light as toaks, but I'm happy with it. (DIY alcohol stove stove is 7grams - but will bring an inexpensive canister stove for more than a couple of nights because I think the fuel is lighter for a multi-day trip)
Good reminders to buy deals. Don't just go by the first thing you see or what someone on UA-cam recommends.
S2s traveller hybrid quilt - 15 oz / s2s etherlite long - 33 oz / Mier lan shan 2 - 35 oz / Granite gear Virga 2 - 20oz = 103 oz or 6.43 lbs. I don't always use this setup, but it is a nice light one.

Two to three pounds for a tent? My DIY Floorless Dyneema tent, 4.4 ft W x 9.15 ft L x 3.5 ft H weighs 4.7 ounces. I folded it and it sits in the palm of my hand. I also made a 4.05 ounce tent. I'm about to make a 6.3 ounce two person tent. A floorless tent provides the owner to decide what material and how much area for the anticipated conditions. Separating the It has a waterproof entry/exit zipper, waterproof mosquito netted vent zipper and hood and has a loop at its' peak for supporting the tent from above by eight or more methods or a pole. You could make one as well. about $170 fpr all materials. I can describe to you how to make it.

Finally got out to Mohican about a month ago. First time at site 3 or any site other than 8-10. What are the other sites down there like? We didn't cross the creek or check out any other sites.
klymit pads do suck. once upon a time I wanted to get a good pad for cheap so I tried out several and I wish I would have just taken that money and used it on something better from the start. I have 3-4 pads sitting in my closet I never use. just shop around or try and find used: nemo, thermarest, big agnes or Seatosummit. if you want actually warm + comfy + under 2lbs you are gonna have to spend a little more.
also some people may disagree but I salivate at an opportunity to buy broken or used gear.. I will happily buy a pad with a hole in it and patch it. or a tent with a snapped pole or a bag with a hole and a broken buckle. Happy to pay a fraction of the price and fix it myself. I have a very nice montbell puffy and a montbel mid layer light jacket and both of them i bought used with small holes. I fixed them up and now I have like $450 worth of jackets I paid like under $200 for.

Re-using single use plastic water bottles is one option, but to eliminate single use plastic use is better. Get a CNOC or 2 😊
Pretty good stuff. I disagree in general with the bladder, but there are certainly drawbacks. Whatever floats your proverbial boat is all good.
While Ebay and FB Marketplace are pretty good, I've found that Sierra (either in-store or online) had some ABSOLUTELY AMAZING deals, mostly because the stuff is generally last-year's models (who cares?). I've found some very high end equipment there and some items that do truly push into the UL realm. To be clear, I'm not affiliated with them in any way at all nor am I paid by them in any way shape or form. I'm just a guy who stumbled into the local one and found some incredible deals; it's an alternative and the gear is all brand new.
Hiking newb here, but... I have a pack (exo mtn) that I use for hunting - it's designed to pack out heavy weights of meat. It's super high end but weights 5 1/2 pounds. So the other day I went on a 8km hike with it, emptied most of the bag, set up camp, and continued on for a 4km day hike. What I noticed was that whether I carried 30 lbs or 10lbs in the pack I couldn't notice the difference on my body. I was thinking of getting a light weight pack for non-hunts, but now I'm thinking I might not get much of an advantage as I find the frameless packs inefficient in weight distribution and your body takes the brunt of it. Is there any common wisdom on this subject?
the first step to my Ultralight Backpacking was to adopt a set of heating pads, powered by a power bank [that I use for everything else I need to power too] and a foldable solar panel [20w] for the longer trips, to keep the power bank charged...
after that everything changed... small single-layer tent, lightweight sleeping bag, clothes, and everything!... and I don't even go for expensive brands!... no need to!
Instead of preserving my core temp, I use tech, to produce more! a change of attitude and everything else follows...

@@freeheel748 my wife and I came very close years ago but we weathered the storm thankfully. Learned a lot from my friend’s divorce while he was going through his. Backpacking really helped me as well. You can process a lot while hiking.

Excellent choices. I love my Outdoor Vitals UL ShadowLight 45 L pack. I do have a Nemo 2p tent, but I like using my Aquaquest tarp 10x10 nearly as much, unless there are bugs.

Props for urging people to reuse their Smart water bottles! I see people repeatedly using new ones. If you can reuse them on the trail when they are less than clean, reuse them when you can take them home and clean before your next trip! SMH
I don't get the aversion to paying for top quality gear. people will drop $$$ on eating out, hotels, coffee, but draw the line at backpacking gear (?). Zero foresight. In the long run you really are not paying a lot.

I don't understand why everyone has to have a sleeping pad. I never needed one until I was 50 yrs old..
My sleep is so precarious in the best of conditions that I wouldn't sleep otherwise. Even with a pad, I still barely sleep camping. It wasn't until I upgraded to thicker pad that I actually slept. I was actually disoriented when I woke up, I slept so well.
it's not about comfort, it's about insulating you from the ground which is the biggest thief of your body heat.

How to go ultralight - just git gud bro 🤷♂️
Cool story bro. I would love to get an ultralight setup, but three huge barriers are in the way. One is cash. I can't sell a kidney, and I'm not a trust fund kid. Two, I'm big and tall. There is virtually no viable ultralight equipment that fits my size and girth. All of the ultralight companies think that everyone who wants to get outdoors is a 5'6" emaciated vegan...I'm pretty sure that the people that make this stuff are 5'6" emaciated vegans...I'm just saying. Three, I'm afraid that I am going to rip this type of gear to shreds if I accidentally brush it up against a thorn bush. I'd recommend that people work out, and condition their bodies to be able to lug a heavy load out.
Ways you can trim weight anyway :
Knife : Mora or Swiss Army Classic model
Flashlight : Photon Micro Lite or just your phone's light
Watch : Just use your phone or wear a Casio Illuminator ( glow doubles as sort of flashlight ).
Sacks : Put everything in a trash bag inside your pack to be light and waterproof.
Water purification : Coffee filters and boiling.
Water bottle : Smartwater or other.
Food : Dry food in Zip-Loc bags
Wallet : Zip-loc bag instead and put in pack zipper pocket
Phone case : Zip-loc or put in trash bag with other gear.
Shorts : Boxer shorts with fly sewn shut
Pants : Nylon hiking pants or long johns pants
Fire Kit : Bic lighter wrapped in Gorilla tape. Toilet paper for tinder etc.
First aid : Moleskins, triple antibiotic ointment dab, aspirin, band-aid. Little else
Survival kit ( Your decision ).
Tarp, mosquito net, pad, tent pegs, trekking poles
Waterproof shell jacket
Heavy fleece long john shirt
T-shirt
@@BeefT-Sq I agree with most of that. I'd add a fero rod, a small blowout kit, a nitecore ul headlamp. A small multi tool, a sawyer squeeze. I'm not saying that you need to roll out with 50 pounds. You can have a lightweight load out without skimping on essentials.
