    Also had my 2021 hesalite for 4 months now, and couldn't agree more with all your points. What I love about it is that in certain lights, the crystal is almost iridescent. The hacking seconds and great accuracy is amazing. So glad you are as happy with yours as I am with mine 👍

    I just got my SS on bracelet on 10.7.23 and I am very pleased with it. I have wanted a "Moonwatch" since the 70's and it looks like my timing is excellent. The 3861 with all its technical / mechanical advancements is amazing. The new 5 link melt on your wrist bracelet with the recently introduced on the fly micro length adjustment. The new stepped dial, lume, domed hands, dot over 90, etc... is close to perfection. I chose the SS because of the durability and the open case back. I love to look at the movement. I am very pleased. It set me back USD 8,000 and is a tremendous value. Oh, yeah did I say it is beautiful. A classy, humble beautiful.

    Great review and congrats. This watch is a life long keeper. For those who are on the fence on upgrading. The new 3861 bracelet fits perfectly on a 1861 Speedy. Just get the bracelet for the sapphire (polished center links) 3861 for $600 USD and you're set to go. No new Speedy needed. Just make sure they sell you the new adjustable clasp Speedy bracelet. Both 1861/3861 for me are pretty much the same and both have pro's that I can't decide if I should get a 3861. I will say the dials on the 1861 will patina slightly. Mine shows color fading (I'm outdoors a lot). The 1861 has a beautiful smooth matte grey/black dial (in sunlight it looks grey). Then again the step dial on the 3861 is just as beautiful. Both wear the same on my wrist. The only con on the 1861 & 3861 is water resistance. Personally I never liked the bracelet for the 1861 even though it was not an issue for me. Thankfully my wrist is a perfect sweet spot at 7 inches, so I can wear large or small watches. I will say the 1836 sapphire sandwich movement is more decorated, smoother polished edges. Unlike the 3861. The movement edges are machine polished and look like they are not fully finished. You can see the machine marks on the movement bridge/plate edges.

    • @TheWatchScientists
      @TheWatchScientists  Рік тому +2

      Thanks for this elaborate comment! For me personally I much prefer the look of the 3861 mainly for the bracelet and the depth and detail of the dial. No wrong choices though here, the 1861 has a more rugged toolish look. Can’t go wrong with a Speedy ;)

    I prefer my sapphire for the simple reason that it's REALLY HARD to scratch the crystal, and it's REALLY EASY to scratch the plexiglas.
    Plus, the presentation back allows me to marvel at the 3861 calibre; a true mechanical marvel.

      For me the caseback would be a plus.

I had the prior 1861 hesalite that made way for the sapphire version but miss the hesalite. I also have the Speedy Apollo 8, the black ceramic version of the Moonwatch - well kind of Moonwatch, it is like the joining together of the Moonwatch, Speedy racing and dark side of the moon. Prices are indeed increasing too much, however out of all the bunch, a Speedy (the latest 3861) is “worth” it in my opinion, but the Speedy and DJ are two very different pieces and shouldn’t be compared imo.

      Glad to see you enjoyed the review and that you’re leaning towards the hesalite version. It's a good choice! So when I used to work for Omega this was my daily watch and I also wore it quite a lot outside of work. So yes my watch definitely picked up some scratches on the glass. Have I polished them? No
      First of all unless you're scraping against a wall the scratches are only lightly visible depending on the light. Second of all, I don't think scratches look bad, and as Chris said, you can always get it polished for a few quid! So don't be afraid of the scratches, they give character and show that you at least wear your watch 😉

    Well, Moonwatch is caliber 321, not a 3861. While it can be called a Moonwatch as sharing many things (including look) with the early generation. It's accurate, yes, master chronometer after all, but is it best chronograph? What about jumping seconds hand over hand second or even second when you press stop/start button (not every time, but you can check it playing with the chrono) because it doesn't have a vertical clutch? Try other calibers of the Omega, like 9900 on Seamaster, it's much smoother and same chronometer.

    • @TheWatchScientists
      @TheWatchScientists  2 роки тому

      The Speedmaster professional is traditionally called Moonwatch and the 321 is just one specific iconic movement reference, the first one that went to the moon. In todays Speedmaster you find the 3861. Depends of what you consider as “best”. Of course there is more complicated chronographs like the Ratrappant Chronographs or foudroyant chronographs. We just say that this is a very accurate watch and in it’s price sector you will have a hard time finding a better more accurate and robust chronograph :)

    • @russkiytube
      @russkiytube 2 роки тому

      @@TheWatchScientists You can still find 321 but it costs two times more than 3861 and I am sure you know why (not just because it is rare and discontinued, it is still in production). Despite 321 has gone about 3 generations since inception as a true Moonwatch, it's sad but with 3861 movement Speedy is a simply improved iteration of the iconic watch (after 1861 as well). Best for me in terms of Chrono is accuracy and how smooth it is for start/stop, recording time, how easy to read the dials. More complicated chronographs? For what? In terms of price - I bought IWC pilot chronograph (with Valjoux 7750 caliber) shortly after I bought Speedy. IWC as a bit cheaper alternative (because IWC doesn't use millions to pay celebrities for promotion apparently, unlike the Omega), does have a history of the brand and series of innovations. But what really disappointed me in Omega is how chronograph works (what I have mentioned - how it's starts and stops, you can google the "Speedmaster Chrono hand jumps forward", moreover there were a lot of issues with Speedy shortly after it was announced with 3861 movement. It's a great looking watch and accurate, but I would not say it is the very best on the market. Opinion is of course subjective.

    I've had the Speedmaster Reduced for 20 years and got the new Professional Sapphire version a month ago. The watch is stunning and wears great but winding it is really unpleasant. I went to the AD to see if other Speedmasters were as difficult to wind, and most are not, even when almost fully wound. But apparently there is nothing wrong with the watch, they explained there is a range of tolerance for the spring resistance. When I was buying the watch I noticed it and asked the AD but they obviously discarded it. I think I got a “hard spring”. How is your winding experience? Did you notice the crown moves backwards after every spin? Also, having the “on-the-fly” adjustment clasp on the Chronoscope a few month later is a shame. Not like Omega to do this.

    • @TheWatchScientists
      @TheWatchScientists  2 роки тому

      No I don’t, my experience winding it is superb. It sounds like this is an individual case …
      I think the clasp thing shouldn’t be too much of a problem. You have to think about the fact that they also need to add improvements along the way with various models, otherwise everything is unveiled in one go which is not good marketing wise. I hope that you’ll still be able to enjoy your Speedy as it is a fantastic piece.
