Only just seen this video but fair play you’ve clearly done your research! As pointed out our rivalry with Birmingham City is greater than our rivalry with stoke. The stoke rivalry only stems from us being not too far from Staffordshire. But Great video very insightful 👍🏻
I know I'm a little late to comment on this video but, as an American who has recently (around November of 2020) gotten into Football I choose the Wolves to be my team (because the friend who got me into Football was a Wolves fan) and I just would like to say thank you for the information. Wolverhampton till I die !!!!
Hey Thaddaeus! Welcome to the channel and thanks for watching & commenting. Cool to hear your story and I’m happy you appreciated my video. All the best to Wolves this season 🍻
Thanks so much Jack! I'm really happy you appreciate it. Lots of hard work but I love researching and making the videos. Let me know if you have any suggestions for future videos &/or topics.
Really good talk. Just to point out Wolves won their first 'major' trophy in 1893 the Fa cup against Everton. As a kid growing up in the sixties matches against Stoke was a big rivalry. A Staffordshire derby as they called it at the time. Don't forget West Bromwich was also part of Staffordshire in those days as was Wolves before the boundary changes in 1974. While games against our Black country neighbours WBA are our traditionally biggest rivals theer has always been a big rivalry with Aston Villa. They are known locally as the big eds from Brum. Even in the seveeties they were big games and after Man Utd and Liverpool ,Villa always took the most away fans to Molineux not the baggies or the blue noses.
@@TheSoccerTavern No problem. Your depth of research was amazing and you were spot on with most everything. One minor detail is that Stan Cullis had the apprentices (including a young Ron Atkinson who later went on to manage Manchester United and Villa amongst others) water the pitch before the game as well as at half time as he wanted to nullify Honved's slick passing game. As I said, great video and I have subscribed. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much. I’m really happy you enjoyed the video and your kind words mean a lot to me! I’m taking a little pause with these videos right now, but I do weekly podcasts with my brothers called Bros Talking Soccer. We have a UA-cam channel and the pods are available on all podcasting platforms. Please say hello on twitter and check them out if you’re interested. Thanks again! -Dave
Very interesting report, there was a rivalry with Stoke (The Clayheads) because Wolverhampton and Stoke were both Staffordshire clubs. Boundaries changed and Wolves became a West Midland side. Nowadays the rivalry with the Vile is because for a while there were no midland opponents, BUT!! with the Tesco lot back in the prem for 3 seasons - Autumn, Winter and Spring old rivalries have been restored.
Great Channel although I do have a major bias as a Wolves fan myself! I can tell you my Father first started watching Wolves in the final playing season of Stan Cullis' career 1946-47 and has followed them ever since, although not much lately due to not being too good on his feet in his 88th year. I believe you didn't have too much info on the Wolves rivalry with Stoke City? This rivalry was geographically based on both teams being the biggest cities and manufacturing areas in the county of Staffordshire (Wolverhampton is now in the West Midlands but until 1974 was in Staffordshire) and they were statistically the two top football teams in this area, although it should be noted that Staffordshire does not have an abundance of top tier football teams. With regards to Aston Villa as rivals, this was again due to locality but also in the 50s games in the english top-flight were played on a Christmas Day and Boxing Day (the day after Christmas) - Wolves would play Aston Villa on Christmas Day and again on Boxing day with them being at home then away the next day, this practise of playing on Christmas Day finished in around 1959.
Also we won the first ever USA football League, when the best 12 British clubs competed. Los Angeles Wolves, who were Wolves first team. Won the title. Also Wolves scored the first ever goal in professional football. We also were the first football club to play an international, beating South Africa. We had the first player in the world, play for his country 100 times and never receive one yellow card. Wolverhampton Wanderers are the history makers.
Thanks so much for watching the video and subscribing Craig! And I love the Nottingham Forest suggestion. I've had a few requests for some other clubs that I need to get to first but will definitely make a video about Forest within the next few months. Also, I'll be over in the UK next month and am trying to catch the Forest vs Wednesday match if my schedule works out.
@@TheSoccerTavernI look forward to seeing the other videos. Also if you do get chance to watching the forest vs Wednesday, it would be awesome if you could do a vlog of some sort, it's always nice to see a neutrals input on a game.
Thanks Craig. I'm either gonna catch Stoke vs Swansea on Tuesday or Forest vs Wednesday on Wednesday. I'll definitely do a vlog but it will probably be over on my Bros Talking Soccer channel. The Soccer Tavern I have more edited and scripted videos. The Bros Talking Soccer channel is where I do podcasts with my brothers and I think a vlog will fit better over there. Thanks for the suggestion and I'll let you know once I post it!
No offense taken at all! I definitely don’t pronounce everything correctly and always appreciate learning the proper pronunciations. Thanks for watching and for the feedback 🍻
Hey David. I’ll add this to the list of future clubs. I’m taking a break from making videos right now and have a bunch of other requests, but I’ll add this to my list. Thanks so much for the support and interest 🍻
Two corrections I would like to make: 1. Stan Cullis had the Molineux pitch watered in the days leading up to the game against Honved, NOT at half-time during the match itself. That would not have been allowed. 2. It's football, not "saccer"...
@@TheSoccerTavern worlds most expensive player when we bought him for £1.5 million from Aston Villa in the 79/80 season. He scored the winning goal in the league cup final in 1980 against Nottingham forest.
Thanks! Yep, I'm from the USA and that's what we call the sport over here. I have no problems with whatever people want to call the sport. It's the beautiful game that we all love, right?
I don't know to be fair. All I know is that ever since I've been going to Molineux (about 17 years), we've been in the same division as Blues, as we call them, many times. Due to the close proximity and also the number of times we've played them in recent times, I'd put them 2nd behind Albion as rivals. As the song goes.. "shiiiiiiiiiiit on the brummies, shit on the brummies tonight ooh ahh ahh!" etc
Haha, thanks for the perspective and for the song. Good to know some more info about this rivalry. Thanks for checking out the video and for the comments. 👍
