Life long Brighton fan here. You clearly are an American football fan so I appreciate the effort you put into learning about our 'little club'. Love that you covered the infamous Hereford game (although I just point out you mispronounced 'Her-e-ford'). One of the most interesting aspects of that game was that if we were relegated, we would have surely gone out of business entirely, as our chairman had sold the our 96 year old ground, The Goldstone Ground, and we had been informed that we would not be welcome in the semi-professional leagues without a ground. Really added to the nervousness of the era, now known as the 'War years', because of the continuous battle fans had with the awful ownership at the time. We were then homeless for 2 years, playing 70 miles away at Gillingham FC's stadium for 2 years, before returning to play at a small athletics track, the Withdean Stadium, for 11 years. When we eventually moved to the Amex in 2011, it really was momentous, because of this period. As someone else has pointed out below, we have never had a rivalry with Bournemouth. There have been periods in my lifetime that we have had a rivalry with Southampton, and I've heard of aggravation with Portsmouth before my time, but really our only ever, most bitter rival is Crystal Palace. Your history of the Palace rivalry is detailed and mostly correct though. Although Brighton haven't been the most successful club ever, I wouldn't trade my footballing journey with anyone. I've seen the club play at every level across the football pyramid, seen the homeless, and watched them fight their way up to where they are now. Thanks for putting in the effort. Great to see we are attracting attention from across the pond. If you are interested in more history about the club I recommend you read 'Death in Grimsby', one fan's 50 year account of being a fan of the club from 1967 to 2017, when we were promoted to the Premier League.
Used to live around 1/2 a mile away south of the old Goldstone ground. We used to hear the cheers of the fans from our house so we always knew when our home team scored. I remember as a young kid (must have been about 7 or 8 years old), I used to walk up to Hove park (across the road from the ground) with my pals, usually about half a dozen of us, carrying an old pigs bladder, lace up leather football and have a good old kick about. When there was a match on, the stewards used to open the gates about 20 minutes before the final whistle, and me any my pals would go into the ground, push and squeeze our way to the front and watch the last few minutes of the game. Upon hearing the final whistle, over the top we went and onto the pitch, running to meet the players going off the pitch. After lots of “well done mate” and patting them on the back, we ran back to an empty goal, dropped our ball and started to take penalties in turn with one of us as the goalie.... After about 10 minute or so the stewards would tell us to clear off, and off we would go. That was about 53 years ago!!!.... Years later I used to go to see both home and away games. One memorable time was when the team played the last couple of away games before they got promoted to the old first division. The last game was at St Jame’s park when they played Newcastle United. 8 hours on a football special train, watch the game and 8 hours train journey again back home. The players came back on the same train, walking up and down the carriages, chatting and signing autographs. There was champagne given out to all of us and it was a real celebration.
The story of the fans coming up with the nickname Seagulls is pretty accurate in fact one of those involved is a director of the club and Falmer resident Derek Chapman, but back to the video a thoroughly enjoyable piece about the club I support!
I do have memories of us playing away at Portsmouth way back in 1984, we lost 5-1 and were lucky to get out of Fratton Park in one piece, stopping off for a pint on the way home was sheer relief. The previous year at the old Wembley stadium in the FA Cup Final against Man U was a completely different experience and stiil ranks as one of the best matches i have ever been to.
@@TheSoccerTavern Still watching the "Seagulls" i started some 60 years ago, now i have a season ticket, so come rain=come shine, i will be there.next home game is against the mighty Man City, i remember watching us play them at home in 1981, and they were nowhere near the team they are today, we won 4-1 and the weather was wet and windy, we lost an umbrella in a gust of wind, it took off and landed in Hove Park somewhere, this was at the old Goldstone ground, luckily we ended up in a nearby pub after and dried out with huge smiles on our faces.

Thanks Noah! Happy you liked the video. I used to live out in San Jose and went to a Sacramento Republic match one time. I’m back on the east coast now. If you’re every one Philly, let me know. Thanks again! 🍻
The pre-Seagull nickname for the team was the Dolphins. It appeared on badges and programmes. Brighton was the home to an Aquarium with captive Dolphins but the Dolphinarium closed in the the 80s because it was tiny and animal cruelty was obvious.
I really enjoyed watching this video and if you ever come over to watch a a game I would love to meet up with you for a pre match pint 🍺. The club really has transformed in the last 20 odd years as when I was growing up I played in a team with 30 plus players and me and one other child supported Brighton but now when I see kids training nearly every one of them are wearing Brighton shirts. It you were to make a follow up video it would be great to explain the rise of the club over the last 20 years I would be honoured to help give you any information you may need as I have a really good memory. It would make a really good video as in the last 20 years we have won 3 league trophies and a play off winning promotion at our temporary home the withdean and of course our promotion to the premier league in 2017.
That’s so cool. I’ve been to the UK a handful of times and if I make it back in the future, I will be sure to take you up on grabbing a pint. And I love the idea of making a follow up video but I’m actually taking an indefinite break from the channel. If/when I come back, I’ll let you know and we can collaborate on a video. Also, I have a bunch of requests for videos of clubs I haven’t done yet, so those may have to come first if/when I come back. Thanks again! 🍻
Thanks so much! On a different note, I’m a Union fan and judging by your profile name, I assume you’re a NYCFC fan. Gonna be an exciting finish to the MLS season!
@@TheSoccerTavern I also thank them for the soft point they made throughout the season on the noteworthy Beat Liverpool, Spurst is no small task for all my appreciation to Graham Potter and the crew for closing such a season. Come on Seagulls!
@@jw045 I was watching Brighton in the seventies with 35000 in what is now league one, taking over seventy busses and a train to Forest on a Tuesday night, and taking ten thousand away to Newcastle. In the Championship only five or six years ago we were getting far bigger crowds than Forest, Wolves, Birmingham Norwich, West Brom and just about everybody else apart from Villa and Newcastle. Our crowds were on a par with Derby and Leeds. One of those years our average was higher than Leeds! What have we won, well not a lot, but we have won the league and been Champions of England. Finally this now our ninth year in the top league in Europe in my lifetime. If you think we are a small club then maybe this is not the club for you and you should consider joining the plastics at Liverpool, Utd or Chelsea.

Brighton fan since 1982. Top video mate!
Thanks so much for checking it out and for the kind words!
Sussex by the Sea was sung by Sussex soldiers during WW1 and is one of the oldest anthems in football. Hence why it means so much.
Good vid.
Thanks for the additional insights. Happy you enjoyed the video 🍻
No mention of the Dolphins nickname, that was a weird name we had lol
Haha, yeah. I left that one out because it was pretty short lived and didn't seem to be enjoyed much by fans based on what I read.

My thoughts exactly!!
The club crest was flipped so the seagull would look forward rather than backwards, it came in when the new stadium opened
