Good idea for a SS amp. For a small tube amp though, instead of running the wires from the amp to a toggle switch it’s better to run them to a jack socket and put a jack plug on your on board speaker socket to avoid the situation where you forget to switch back to onboard speaker if you unplug the external speaker.
I have a Blackstar ID Core 40 watt Stereo amp with twin 4 ohm 6.5" speaker very small 915 lbs and about 16" square )s which I added a 12 pin spdt switch and 2 output jacks (stereo remember and have custom built vertical 4 X 12" cabs (also 4 ohm) to plug it into and it pushes air pretty well for a tiny digital practice amp.. cabs are 16" wide and deep and 54" tall...can stand on either side of the 100" big screen on the wall or they can be attached together side by side to mimic a full stack.. Either way they sound great. and if I plug in my heavily modded Starcaster Strat..look out...
I've added a 1/4 inch "amp in" to a 2x12 combo at a jam space so that I can bring my own head there to use. The original plan was to add a fx loop, until I looked inside this Vox ac30vr. Looked way too complicated to do a mobile solder mod. Anyways, I literally just tapped into the extra set of inputs on one of the speakers itself and when we went to jam the week after, while under normal operation (I.e. nothing plugged into the amp in jack I added, just using the amp normally as a combo, my guitarist would get a crazy high pitch squeal when the distortion would kick on. Without the switch, did I change the impedance by adding the jack EVEN when nothing is plugged into it? I'm trying to learn here myself and am confused about why it is happening
Undo the mod - if the squeal goes away then yes you did cause it. If not, well your amp works different now or something else broke it. The easier way to do this is to use a Cliff Jack. When no 1/4 Inch Jack is inserted just let the unit stay stock. But when you plug in a jack the internal bars lift, cutting off the unmodified path, and you can route that signal where you like. In my mod the amp output flows down the inserted speaker cable and disconnects the internal speaker. The only downside is you have to be sure that wire is plugged into a functioning speaker of appropriate ohm
I know this video is from a year ago, but hopefully you can answer my question, I just got back into playing bass again after not playing for about 20 years. I saved most of all my equipment and I have a 70s Ampeg V4B head that is a tube amp with a 2×15 cabinet that's been in my unheated garage and I know that one speaker is shot plus I know that there is a good chance that it will probably need work and it is the size of a refrigerator, and I rather not bring it in the house, to get going right away I purchased a Fender Bassman 100 combo amp with 15" speaker. When I bought the amp I knew that just the one 15" speaker would not be able to handle the amp much more past the volume past 5 but I figure that all combos had a Jack for a external speaker cabinet and did not look when bought it. So I have had the amp for a month and looked on the back of the amp and of course no external speaker jack, and is a solid state. You make it look so easy and dont know if I can do the job, and do not want to mess up the amp, and rather not buy another amp. Sorry for the long comment but would a technician do the job and about how much it would cost, just a rough estimate to how much it would cost. Thank you
Great video! I have a 40W 1x12 combo amp that I want to mod in a similar way with a switch. Is it safe to use standard 15A 250V AC DPDT switch. Hey Merwin, I have a Line 6 Spider V mk2 60 watt guitar amplifier but I am trying to connect it to an external speaker but it doesn't have any kind of speaker output connection at all.... What are some ideas, tips, tricks, and information you could help me out with?
Hello Merwin Music: I was thinking of getting a Marshall CODE100 combo amp. On the back of that amp, there's an 8ohm cabinet connection OUT jack. Scenario: If I connect that jack to, say, an external Marshall Lead 1960 cabinet, will the combo amp's internal speakers CONTINUE to work WHILE the external cabinet is connected, or will it ONLY play through the external cab when connected? I'm asking because I thought it would be cool to have a true "stereo sound" in my jam room, keeping the combo nearer me and then placing the larger 1960 4 x 12 cabinet cross the room for a big, wide sound. Comments or suggestions?

I modded one of these MG10CD Marshalls to add an external speaker output with a DPDT switch to change between internal/external speaker, the mod works as expected but after having done that now when I'm in the OD channel, the gain potentiometer also increases volume, so I can not use it with full gain at low volumes, and the volume knob doesn't do much until it gets to about 9 o'clock, but even at 0 there is still volume coming out of whatever speaker I'm using (either internal or external), do you have any idea on what could be going on? I also drilled two holes to the front and extended the clipping LEDs there so that I can see when I'm playing how the LEDs turn on and off, that also works as well, I'n not sure if that would have anything to deal with the volume issue. Thanks beforehand.
Interesting. But is it possible to connect a head tube amplifier to a combo amp in order to use only the speaker, sparing with buying a cab alone? I own the same kind of amplifier, a Park G25R with a 10" speaker.
As long as the speaker impedance and wattage is right for the amplifier. I have plugged a couple of heads into the speaker inside my fender hot rod deluxe.
@@MerwinMusic with your connection, you keep the amp active and you choose to either use the cab speaker or an external speaker. But what I'd like to do is keeping the speaker active in any case but being able to deactivate my amplifier to connect a head to the speaker.
Why not just add a switching jack? When nothing is plugged into it, the signal will go to the internal speaker. When a speaker cable is plugged into it, the signal will be routed to it, and onto the external cabinet. No need for a manual "internal/external" switch.

how about an unpowered output? a direct out to run to another amp
How to mod footswitch for any amp ?
This is sick, has anyone done this sort of mod to a Roland JC? I'm tempted to get a jc 22 and put it through my 212 cab.
I came here to figure out if i can add just a switchable 1/4 jack to my peavey vip 2 combo.
Is it possible to make the both speaker sound at the same time?
Not really. If you hooked up both in either series or parallel then you would either double or half the resistance.
Couldn’t you use an on/on/on switch to have the speaker and the out jack running at the same time?
Does it matter if the 1/4" jack is stereo or mono?
It only need to be mono. if it's stereo then you just don't hookup the ring.
Awesome, just what I want to do to my MG10CF
Hi, I also have a MG10CF- did you ever end up doing this mod?
@@gerrydaly5409 No, I sold the MG10 but I could help you do it with yours
@@santiagomoreno696 That would be awesome, thanks! I'll send you a private message now
@@gerrydaly5409 I got a Marshall MG-10CD and did the mod to it
@@santiagomoreno696 Wow awesome! are you on Facebook or how can I contact you
I want to do this to a blues jr
1/4 switched female jacks exist too
Why not just add a switching jack? When nothing is plugged into it, the signal will go to the internal speaker. When a speaker cable is plugged into it, the signal will be routed to it, and onto the external cabinet. No need for a manual "internal/external" switch.
Please respond man I cant follow the diagram that you provided and I dont want to break my amp
The website article goes into a little more detail and has a pretty good picture of how to hook it up.
If you use a switched jack instead of just that standard one, you wouldn't need the switch.
The converted radio looks like a small microwave oven.
It kind of does...haha
