The Cutlass was the big seller then, I looked at one before buying the Pontiac and the Pontiac of all the GM midsize I thought were the best looking.Dad and I had been looking for a month and walked in this Pontiac dealer and I said dad, there is the car! It listed for 5,985.00. It had the Firethorn colored body side molding. I just never understood why they did not sell more of them. Pontiac as always been my favorite car, I would love to find one someday. Thanks for sharing.
I had a 1976 Pontiac Grand Le Mans, boy do I wish I had kept it. It was a demo, my parents helped me get it and I paid the note on it. It was White with the Firethorn half Vinyl top and Firethorn bucket seat with the console. It had the Rally II wheels, not the body colored. It had the AM-FM factory 8 track, Tilt wheel, Factory A/C, the body color mirrors and the 350 2 barrel. Some of the Pontiac folks referred to it as the baby Grand Prix, had the most beautiful dash. They just never took off
Hey. Dave! You made a great decision...I don't know how many say that they regret selling their prized old car. If you have the room, it's a great idea to save it! Thanks! :) Jack
That is a great car for a young driver! It certainly had to be a popular choice at school! Style and performance...an unbeatable combination! Great memories! Thanks! :) Jack
WOW! Great looking car. I had the same '76 Grand LeMans however mine was a deep burgundy red color with the console shift. My parents baught it for me in '81 3 months before I turned 16yo and I drove it all thru high school. I loved that car.
Beautiful car! Takes me back cause 76' was the year I got my DL. I remember a girl in H.S. received a brand new 76' Grand Prix SJ in this Y/WH combo for her B-Day. She put it in a ditch and a lot of the kids laughed, except me. Myself, Dad bought a 73' triple black Grand Prix for my driving pleasure. I've drove some very nice cars since then but that GP remains my favorite.
That certainly reinforces in my mind that certain cars are forever ingrained in our minds! Those Grand Prix's are a great example! Pontiac really did a great job with the Grand Prix...much better than it had to be, as they say! Thanks! :) Jack
OMG am I pleased you videoed this one, Jack! It's one of my favourite cars of all time, especially the ultra rare Can-Am edition which was known at the time as 'the Trans Am in a dinner jacket' ! It's an exceptionally beautiful car in my opinion, and one of the most under rated cars of the late 70's era, but you do see quite a few of them in late 70's and early 80's TV shows and movies :D
@drewerz01 Hey, Mike! It's my pleasure to share this car...thanks for the description of the Can-Am! A friend had one back in the day...and I believe it had the overhead cam 6 that Pontiac offered at the time. Engineering and styling were really at their zenith at Pontiac! Thanks! :) Jack
Hi, Jack! Beautiful! I have a '76 Sports Coupe, currently in restoration. I believe the name for the color was Bavarian Creme on the sticker (not with me at the moment). Have a padded vinyl which was called Buckskin, matching seats. When the guys get finished restoring mine, I'll post a video too. (We're almost twins, except for the white vs buckskin).
Congratulations on having a Sports Coupe! This car isn't mine, I just videoed it at a show, but I've always been impressed with Pontiacs. Thanks for the proper color name. I wish you the best in your restoration...let me know when you post a video! Thanks! :) Jack
I had a 1976 LeMans 4dr- same creme/biege color as the one shown..........and even with the weight @ 3990 GVW it had a 250 inline 6cyl that produced 155HP @ 150 ft/lbs of torque.Even though it couldnt get out of its own way ; @ 65 MPH it drove like a dream and got 23-25 MPG with the a/c on.
Hey, Sonny! Yes, you give up certain things with a six at this point...but the economy was well worth it, particularly if you did a lot of travelling! Thanks! :) Jack
Yeah, by 76, cars were pretty well strangled with emissions control, and I agree, the car was pretty heavy! By 78, they were downsized a bit, so that would have been lighter. I think you're right about the 260 being made by Olds. Thanks! :) Jack
It's great that you had one of these cars, and I'm glad this video brought back pleasant memories! I agree about its good looks...just a little different from the rest of the GM lineup, it was distinctive! I wish you luck in your search for one! Thanks! :) Jack
@jferg7159 Hey, Joe! This really is an attractive model...I just wish I could spot the stationwagon of this series..now that would be a rare car! That really is a complete engine range choice! Thanks! :) Jack
I have a mahogany/white '76 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Brougham, the one with the power pillow top seats, it's as nice as the Pontiac's, and as comfortable. The Pontiac is clean though, great car. That Pontiac with a warmed over 350 4 Bbl., some deeper rear gears and HD sway bars/springs/shocks, and a tighter steering box would be awesome.
Hey, Duayne! I agree...it is a bit upsetting to see the wheel in that position! LOL! One hopes the front wheels are not pointed straight ahead! :D Thanks! :D Jack
Jack R yes ! this actually happened to a co worker. changed the steering box on a 77 t bird the customer didnt even notice it till the next day! we all had a good laugh!
Like I commented above I had a 1976 coupe and it was often referred to as the baby Grand Prix, the dash was the same and console if it had it and mind did. Mine had the 350 2 barrel, not a lot of pickup. I think it was a heavy car. I think Oldsmobile made the 260 V-8. Like I said I think it had the best looking interior of any 76-77 GM mid sized car.
Thay were a beautiful car automatic on the floor hurst shifter lot them came with powered windows 350 small block very fast and 400 small block automatic 1976 Pontiac lemans with fender skirts because car A1

That large C pillar with the rectangular opera window does look classy. I remember seeing a lot of these in 76. They were great highway cruisers.

I have a 1977 Grand Le Mans. Bought it in 1979 when I was 19. I still have it, and drive it in summer. Still rides smooth down the road

Nice! That interior is right up there with the Grand Prix.
Indeed it is....and you know how I like white interiors! Thanks! :) Jack

My dad had the same car in light metallic blue......1974 Grand lemans.......man I miss that car
Hey, Jim! Your dad really had a great car...I'm glad this video brought back the memories! Thanks! :) Jack

+Dewey Veer Hey, Dewey! Yes, they managed to have two cars with very similar configurations, yet maintained the identity of each! Thanks! :) Jack
