  • Curious how not to freeze to death during winter adventures? I'm here to help. In addition, also are my impressions of the Arc'teryx Proton FL, which truly impressed me, and made for a very successful 2 layer system during medium to high exertion in 25F degree weather in the mountains.
    Full list of gear
    Baselayer: Head Performance T-shirt (Medium)
    Mid-Layer: Arc'teryx Proton FL (XL)
    Hardshell: Arc'teryx Theta AR (L)
    Belay Jacket: Patagonia Micro Puff Storm (L)
    Softshell Pants: Black Diamond Dawn Patrol LT (Medium)
    Thermal Bottoms: Patagonia Capilene mid-weight (Medium)
    Backpack: Osprey Talon 22

      Enjoy. You won’t be disappointed. It’s not ski and snow season anymore so now is the time to make those outerwear purchase.

    Love your vids and I also own a Theta, which I’ve owned for 12 YEARS now. Sent it in 2 years ago to re-tape. Very rugged shell. Wonder why they discontinued?

      You’ll notice Arcteryx has slowly killed off their wonder all-in-one jackets like the Theta AR and Rush LT. The last hold out is the Beta SV and it was barely available this last winter and vanished off the site a couple of months ago .

    You’re talking about wearing only two layers, yet you’re wearing three. The t-shirt counts as your base layer. You also said you were fine and chilly in the same sentence. A person loses very little articulation when wearing Arc’teryx, because their clothing is made for mountaineering. Their stuff is designed to climb in. I’m a medium sized male. My base layer is always medium and my mid layer is always medium, I prefer a large shell layer. Although I’ve worn medium shell layers and they fit, I prefer the large, because I have a dad-bod. Proper sizing is key.

      Running chilly while active is more efficient. Ideally you feel chilled/comfortable while moving. Warm when static is desirable, warm while mortaring is more draining. However outerwear needs is always evolving. I ski mostly not and my needs are very different than a couple of years ago.

      Soon I hope. COVID, earth quake and a fire in my mother’s place have created some serious challenges on time and availability.

    How bulky is the proton fl compared to the proton lt ?

    • @ALTAGEAR
      @ALTAGEAR  Рік тому +1

      The Proton FL is quite a bit thinner. Maybe about a 1/3 of the amount of loft.

      Probably the best new option is the current generation DAS. It’s a beast of a jacket. From Arc’teryx you have the new Nuclei SV as well.

    Hey what kind of pants are u wearing?

      Think for this video I was wearing Black Diamond Dawn Patrol pants from 2015. However I greatly recommend the ARC’TERYX Gamma AR pants. I have two pair and they are great for cold weather mountain activities but they aren’t ski boot compatible so no touring in them.

    I'm guessing you have long pants under your pants; also 2 layers means your not sitting still too long?

    • @ALTAGEAR
      @ALTAGEAR  2 роки тому

      If you’re referring to base layers for the legs, yes. I’ve been wearing Patagonia Capilene midweight and thermal weight base layers for several years. They are excellent. Not sure I understand your comment on 2 layers.

      @@whbjr2528 Most of that day I was actually just wearing the Proton FL on top so really 1 layer (and T-shirt). I only put on the Theta AR when the snow started coming down hard. I was really comfortable on the ascent. It’s only when I stopped moving for awhile that I felt cold.

    What about the loft compression under the large outer layers? I’ve heard it’s “bad” to do this as it won’t keep you as warm? Is this accurate?

    • @ALTAGEAR
      @ALTAGEAR  2 роки тому

      If the cut of your jackets is wrong, you will compress loft and be less thermally efficient. Not a concern with this particular set up. You most often have this problem when trying to fit bulking puffy layers under slim fitting softshells and hard shells.

    why you not wearing wool underwear?++

      Because it holds moisture far to long. Polyester is Hydrophobic, wool is hydrophilic.
