- In this video tutorial I will show you how to create Timelapse Photography Videos using the Sony RX100 VII (bhpho.to/35C4ELE). I will go over all the various interval shooting function settings on the camera and then show you how to take the images and turn them into a video using the free Sony Imaging Edge Software as well as the more advanced program I use called Final Cut Pro X. Jay, congratulations, you do a fantastic job for those of us, analog photographers, who have recently switched to digital photography. I graduated in 1973 from Brooks Inst. of Photo. Spent the next thirty some years carrying a big square box with a Super Cambo 4" x 5" camera w/ a 90 mm Schneider Super Angulon & a 210 mm Schneider lenses, + 24 film holders and a Majestic heavy duty tripod = 36 lbs. And then . . . I found the Sony X100 VII computer with a lens. This thing is awesome, but difficult to comprehend for an analog mind. Thank you for your videos, you have no idea how much they help the uninitiated. Keep up the good work, be well, M.

Thanks a lot for this video! I was playing with a new Go Pro and realized I had never attempted a time lapse on my RX100. The added Final Cut tutorial is exactly what I needed to help me learn this feature.

thanks i ll test to do it with RX100M6. I Know time laps is not built in the M6 but with an externe intervallometer , i suppose we can.

Hi Jason, your tutorial was like 2 years ago but it is just what I need right now. I have watched it carefully a few times and have benefited a lot. There is one thing I hope you could give me more tips about Sony A7R4 Iso Auto Min ss setting up. I am lost here, it can set 1/125'' or 4s or even 15 to 30ss. In my situation of shooting day-to-night timelapse, what speed should I set?

Hello, You would need to use the playmemories app if you can get it to work, or you can get a intervolmeter remote like this: amzn.to/3tuNldb that will take the shots for you via the USB port...
Really nice video and tutorial, thanks! Just some questions: how does the AE automatic exposure compensation work (the menu with low, medium and high parameter)? So, I explain what I mean.... Does it work on aperture parameter, or shutter speed or iso or electronic EV compensation parameter? And finally, does it produce flickering (or the risk to have flickering) which I have to correct in post production after?

Hello, I would recommend having the auto iso minimum shutter set to standard for that purpose.
Hi Jason, Can I use the intervalometer on the RX100 vii to produce full-size individual image files in RAW that I can then edit in Lightroom - like you would with individual photos? I'm not interested in time lapse - more as a way of taking regular timed still images at highest quality.

For a point and shoot, the entire time lapse to video assembly process should have been done in camera (as an in camera process) after shooting time lapse (result output as a video file). I believe that’s how Canon and most smart phones does it and it seems way more convenient.
Yeah I agree and in camera option would be great, although I personally enjoy the extra power of the photo method ;)
Hi there! I wanted to use this time lapse function to be able to do self-portraits. Unfortunately Sony engineers decided to switch off the continuous focus :( Do you have any idea, is there an app or a solution to this particular problem. Thank you ok advance !
I now this is not an ideal situation, but you can record video and steal a frame from the footage to get a huge variety of self portraits (super easy method, but not that high resolution since it's video footage). Another option would be to use manual focus and setting the focus on an object where you will be standing for the time-lapse. The last two options would be to have somebody take the photo for your or use the app via your smart phone to take the photo while your in front of the camera. That will focus on you and if you use the self timer, you can hide the phone for the photo.
If I wanted to take self portraits and have the camera continuously take photos without the use of a remote, is this a good option? Or do these files only work for making video and not photography shots?

Hi, thanks for useful videos! Question: I did 2 timelapses of sunsets and I do not understand one thing. I explain. Conditions: P mode; ISO 100; interval 6 s; AE traking to Mid; shoot int priority to OFF. My timelapse starts at 1/1000, F4.5. Then, as the light goes down, F always stays at 4.5 and S increases until 1/4. Then it would not increase further and I noticed the "1/4 F4.5" was blinking from that point on. Why was it stuck at 1/4 s ?Why not continue increasing? Is it the AE traking algorithm? Actually the timelapse looked great this way! The scene was going black instead of grainy grey when the camera tries to keep exposure up... But I would like to understand what the camera is doing. Thanks.
Oh, I should have read your reply in another comment... So, it is the electronic shutter? Technically, I do not see why long exposures would be a problem for electronic shutter, on the contrary very short exposure could be problematic if reading speed becomes none negligible compared to acquisition time...

The Sony camera in the film has two types of shutter? Electronic and mechanical? If so, what other timelapse cameras have an electronic shutter? I always thought that in such cameras there is only a mechanical shutter (it's a pity for timelapses). For this reason, I started to be interested in gopro cameras and I gave up cameras. I would be more interested in timelapse video (not photo)

And is it possible to set the amount of pictures to "infinity" while shooting timelapse?
Thank you for the kind words and yes it is possible to have the camera charging while in use vias the USB port. As far as infinity time lapse or interval shooting goes, it does not appear so. The manual says 1 shot to 9999 shots...

Ok, so there is no way to set 0 for infitiny then. I got a remote for my old dslr and there I can set 0 as the end target instead of 9999 and then it will just keep shooting. And on my G7X mk2 it's even more pointless, they got very restricted timelapse modes and the camera shuts off while charging. You can view content on the memory card but you cant shoot nothing..
So again, thanks for these genious videos and thank you for replying. I'm visiting a local photo store tomorrow and check if they got the camera in stock. If they do I might just get one tomorrow thanks to you.. :D

Hi any idea if the AE tracking sensitivity affects also the day to night exposure ?
Leave mine always on low but ends with rather dark night images
Someone else claimed that if you use an external intervalometer the night shots are less dark.

Hello :) Yes it will effect the sky as it changes and I recommend trying Medium or High and having your camera set to Auto ISO which will also allow the exposure to fluctuate as needed.

No it does not unfortunately. You can use the Sony software to remote control the camera and do timelapse though, but it looks to be a bit cumbersome. I have not tried this method myself however. It sounds like your camera is set to multi-shot drive mode? Try switching to single shot drive mode for longer exposure's ;)
Jay SonyAlphaLab thanks, I checked and I am in single shot mode and have tried shooting in manual, shutter priority and aperture priority still can’t get it to go over 1/4s. I don’t know what else to do
@@erich56 I'm sorry Erich I thought it was the drive mode, but you actually need to set the "Shutter Type" to Mechanical Shutter for longer exposures. Do that and then the shutter speed will go longer than 1/4 second. I just tried it to confirm ;) Please let me know how you make out! I really appreciate your question, because I did not realize this as every timelapse I did so far was faster than 1/4 sec exposure. I just tried it in a darker scenario and sure enough it locked at 1/4 second just like you said. That is until I switched to Mechanical Shutter....

The A900 is a really old camera and does not have this "relatively new to Sony cameras" feature.

Hi, I ran into another problem: I am doing a timelapse (still on in fact!), conditions: P mode; ISO 100; interval 5 s; AE traking to Mid; mech shutter; shoot int priority to ON (so it will keep the 5 s if exposure is longer). My timelapse started and went on normally. It is a sunset, so light went down. Now it is doing: take a picture, do noise reduction, take a picture and so on. I do not think that it has time to end the noise reduction process. So I want to stop it. I pushed the shutter button, it does not stop it. I tried to keep the button pushed during a whole cycle (pic+ noise reduction), but it does not stop... I will see if it stops after the set time. I do not want to try to power off and risking a camera failure.
Did you try pressing the center button inside the control dial on the back? That should stop the process. Turning the camera off will also stop the process and you won't lose any photos, it saves them to the memory card after each exposure. It's a good idea to turn off the noise reduction for sure! MENU → (Camera Settings1) → [Long Exposure NR] → desired setting.
@@Jason_Hermann Thanks for the suggestions. It stops when the set time was reached. I will try the center dial button if it happens again. And yes, turning off noise reduction should be a good idea too.
I am getting black bar like structure when shutter speed is more then 1/30 in interval mode…in my sony 6600…not occuring in regular photo…kindly help
