    I bought a Jotul 602 15 years ago at a yard sale, because it was such a lovely stove. I lived on a boat, so it went into storage. And I moved it with me up and down the east coast. I finally bought a house and am in the process of installation. Your video is invaluable as I now see that the "innards" all of the burn plates have been removed and will need to be replaced. Thank you for this video!

      Hi Pamela D,
      You are very welcome! Sorry for the poor quality video.
      Our Jotul was sold about 2 years ago with the farm. However, I plan to leave the video up just in case we find another 602.
      Take care,
      Bruce

    Love your video. Very clear. Very understandable. Never had rebuilt a stove before. Can't say it was easy but never could have done it without your video. Was quite pleased with myself when I fired it up after complete rebuild. Thanks Again.

    Thanks for posting this - I was just getting started on replacing the secondary burn system on mine (which is in rougher shape than yours) when I thought to search and found your video. Now I realize it's a bigger project than I'd appreciated, and I need to get caulk.
    I have previously replaced the side plates, which I was able to do without any dis-assembly. The really hard part there was getting the old warped plates out. I had to use a lot of leverage for one.

    I have the exact same stove, and am about to swap out the baffle plates for the first time, so your video is very helpful. Otherwise, I be doing the shin bone's connected to the thigh bone approach. My old baffle plates are more than 20 years old, but one has cracked and burned through. I don't tend to run this stove hard, but over time cast iron will oxidize from the heat, so new plates are inevitable. Love the stove; it keeps our 600 SF house at 70 all winter in New Hampshire. Thanks again!

    Thank you so much. We own four jotul's, two very old, two newer, all 602 models. The old 602C's are easy to replace the burn plates in, as all the parts fit through the door. Thanks to your video we are preparing to tear apart out 602N as the air baffle does not fit through the door. We expect all the bolts to break off as they are in poor condition. Please plug your ears! Thanks for sharing.Ken and Linda

    Bretwood,
    Glad the video helped. I've used a lot of other folks videos over the years (car repairs, home repairs, etc) and thought it was my turn to add to UA-cam since I didn't find a Jotul repair vid.
    Good to know you can replace to the side plates without dis-assembly. I really hope we go at least 10 years before our stove needs any further work.
    Good luck on your rebuild!

      I absolutely amazed that you did not snap any bolts. I ended up snapping two of the four that secured the top plate to the sides. And another two hold the baffle plate in position. As I was replacing the baffle anyway, this wasn't a concern but I ended up purchasing a new top plate rather than trying to drill out the snapped bolts which just seemed like it was going to be impossible given their texture. **** In hind sight, I wished that I had "shocked" each of the bolts and used penetrating oil (and possibly some heat as an alternative before attempting this) Heat or the shocking may have helped me in my particular circumstance. Waiting on some parts then I"ll put her back together. Regardless, your video was REALLY helpful. Thanks again!

    Thank you very much for posting this video and being thorough about it. I just left a guy in Anaheim, after driving two hours to see if this exact stove, who told me there were no issues with it and then when I get there he says the front plate door area is leaking smoke when it’s lit and he had had not tightened up all the bolts after painting it and there’s all kind of red flags but after seeing this video I don’t want to have to fix the stove like this.

      Hello Trevor,
      I understand why wouldn't want to buy the stove and then need to rebuild it. We've moved to another location and sold the house with the Jotul. The new place was a rental so we purchased an $800 rolled steel stove from our local Lowes home improvement store. It's the best wood stove we've used! Better than the Vermont Castings & better than the Jotul. Bigger firebox and the secondary burn works fantastic. Good luck

  • @tbb10785
    @tbb10785  12 років тому +1

    Hey Nathan,
    You might be able to replace just the side burn plates but pushing up on the top baffle/secondary burn chamber. Then the side burn plates can be moved upwards to slide out. FYI, the plates need to slide in from the top for assembly / dis-assembly.
    You will need to remove the front and/or back of the stove along with the top to gain working room. FYI, the front and back are just held in with chalk.
    Let us know how it goes!

    Hey Gary,
    Yes, there are two bottom burn plates which you can remove once you have the side burn plates removed. You can see one of the bottom plates at about the 6:50 mark in the video sitting under the stove. The side and bottom burn plates are held in without any bolts or chalk, just gravity and friction fit.
    Yes, We're very happy with the stove. It's about perfect for our needs and house size of about 900 sq ft downstairs where the stove sits.

    Sorry to read about the leaks. I hope this rebuild goes smoother. I used a brush in my drill like you and the stove looked good after a winter's use of heating. However, we sold the house in June and the stove went with the house so I can't comment in how it looks approaching one year from the rebuild.

  • @tbb10785
    @tbb10785  11 років тому

    Great, glad you were able to locate the part. The heat shields seem to go fairly quickly if you overheat the stove regularly. The nice thing is our stove is working like new again after the rebuild. Good luck this weekend and hope the video helps. My video quality and instructions are "very average" maybe you should make a better one! I can say that the stove rebuild wasn't the most difficult project I completed last so you'll probably finish it with no problems.

  • @tbb10785

    The burn time is only a few hours but the woodstove supplements our gas & electric heaters. We have a 70 year old house without central heat/AC.
    I would recommend using the very dry wood in this stove seasoned for 18 months to two years. I'm actually using a lot of kiln dry oak scraps from a lumber yard. The air control in the front of the stove can me cracked to the width of nickel once hot.

    Great video. My only comment is....if you think your burn plates were bad....then you could make some money by reselling them. Some of us would consider them to just be getting to the ripe stage with the warpness and cracks. I run a Upland 17 which was one of the popular state side knock offs of the Jotul 602, basically identical.

I'm looking at buying one from the 70's (or something) and I was wondering if I can order any new part and have it fit. For instance, one side plate is cracked. (However, I was maybe just gonna weld that since that side will be along a wall and not really seen).

    I just bought an old 602 & cleaned it up, it looks great but it's missing the "step down" flange where you begin to attach it to stove pipe. Any idea on where to find & do these use 4" or 6" stove pipe? I'm installing a through the ceiling/roof kit using triple wall pipe in the attic. This is in a small cabin so fortunately not much pipe is needed. Is it okay to use just standard stove pipe before it goes through the ceiling/roof area? Thanks, HR

    • @thomasbrown825
      @thomasbrown825 7 років тому

      Sorry, I no longer have the stove because we sold the farm back 2012. I'd just search the net for the step down flange. It was 6" inch pipe for this stove. Single wall pipe until it meets the ceiling roof kit is standard procedure in the stove I've seen installed. This will give you more heat in the cabin too. Good luck!

    Thanks for posting. I plan on rebuilding my Jotul which is now in pieces--does anyone have recommendations as to what type of sealant or furnace cement to use to restore the airtight quality. Also what type of paint--is high temp auto engine paint ok or is there a special paint for woodstoves? Or just put it back together and then use old fashioned stove polish on the cast iron? Thanks

      @tbb10785  10 років тому

      Good luck on the rebuild. Just take your time and take a break if you get frustrated or tired is the best advice I can give.
      I picked up the stove chalk at my local hardware store and the brand was Imperial. I believe either one of these brands are a similar to what I used. www.reddevil.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=897#.VA89yfldXX8
      www.dap.com/product_details.aspx?BrandID=7&SubcatID=2
      The paint is nothing special, just something I've used on outdoor gas grills and motorcycle exhaust headers. I'll warn you that it usually stinks/smells during the first few heat cycles, then no more odor.

    Hello and great video. Thanks for leaving it up. How big an area did this stove heat and how long was the burn time before you rekindled the coals? I'm looking at both the 602 and 118 with it's bigger fire box for a 400 sq' cabin. Thanks

    • @dagrade51
      @dagrade51 9 років тому

      I have both stoves. The 602 would be my choice for a 400 sf cabin. I think you'd have to damper down the 118 if you used that. Of course it depends how tall your ceilings are. Volume is better determinant than area.

    • @tbb10785
      @tbb10785  9 років тому

      Hello KD5VSV,
      Sorry for the delay and missed the note.
      Good advice in the note below. I've not used the 118 but I know it's a larger stove. Given that we used the 602 to heat about 800 sq ft which worked well for all but the nights that where close to zero or day after day of below freezing temps. The insulation levels, windows, doors, in the house will have a big effect on feeling warm (or not). Also the type of wood you burn, well seasoned or just split. I was lucky enough to have kiln dried oak scraps during the last couple years with the stove. The stove put out more heat with this than firewood air dried for two years. FYI, this stove hated green (just split) wood, no heat and hard to start.

      You have to remove the bottom burn plates for the side you need to replace the side liner for. In the bottom center of the 2 lower burn plates is a notch . You will need an old screw driver and pry up one side at a time in these slots .Pretty much self explanatory at that point .
