Yes, there was resort to conscription, but it was based on a class system, which is not the same as the English, but on the age of the people being called up. However, even when you were in the year, you still didn't go, unless you were drawn in the lottery. Yes, the uniforms were amazing, although there were three mistakes in amongst the French army. Mind you, it was great to see that they did have the sergents carrying their muskets on the correct arm. Unlike most re-enactment units.
