Finished my bow and arrows Andy and they work a treat . Really nice bushcraft/survival project and I loved every minute of making them. In fact so much that I'm going to make more bows and really get into it . Thank you so much Andy the best Bushcraft/survivalist channel on UA-cam
I am thoroughly impressed at the depth and variety of skills and content you've put into this video. I'm going to be sticking around for a while to see all your other content.
Like I told the squirrel hunter, the only thing wrong with your videos is that there aren't enough of them! :) Thank you for the knowledge my friend!! Love it!!
Thanks Ralph, I'm trying to post at least once a week from now on. Nick's great! He's got a crackin channel. Glad you enjoyed my video bro. Take care, Andy
Maybe the best tutorial on field expedient survival bows and arrows . Nice to see a fellow woodsman who carries a large blade and knows how to use it . Congratulations and thanks for your video Andy . Respect sent from New Mexico USA .
Thanks again Lefty. That's it... In the UK, that blades classed as a weapon. In Bulgaria and your country, it's classed as what it is... A tool. Your kind words are muchly appreciated bro. Good luck with the Elk and Bear hunts. When does the season start? Is it Black Bear your going after?? Cheers
That was really GREAT! I learned quite a bit, like using tin from a can to make your arrow heads...AWESOME! The straightening of the arrows was very instructive...the making of the glue....was very awakening...really Great! The craftsmanship was outstanding...you teach very well....keep up the good work! Many thanks, thoroughly enjoyed your video. God Bless.
Thank you brotha, that's real kind of you, glad you enjoyed my video. My survival crossbow video is very simular, just more detailed in the areas you mentioned. Check it out if you get chance. Thanks again and God bless. Andy
HI Andy, another cracking vid bud, and a pine pitch tutorial thrown it too!!! top quality brotha, smashing having you back! stay safe, warm and well fed.
Thanks Mick, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Doesn't have the same beauty as your bows, but it does the job. Once it's dry, I'll rub a bit of fat into the wood as I love the look of your bows once they've been varnished. Especially the bark side. Thanks for watching. You've always been real kind towards my channel. It's muchly appreciated my friend. You to, take care.
That is a fantastic way to make a quick and unique bow and I'm glad you made this video it showed me other materials then normal stuff. The glue part was awesome. I'll be watching more.
Yea this video is well done. No over explaining and lots of good details. Overall everything is presented in a very practical way and he has a good cadence to his speech. It's surprising how hard that glue got when it dried.
Brilliant video. From watching this once, I believe I could make a bow in a survival situation. Whether I could get something with it is another question. I’m gonna give it a go this weekend
Hello Andy very nice arrow and bow you’re making there looks great mate love it and I’ll make sure I can make my arrow and bow kit for my Tarzan warrior survival kit one day and once again very nice video cheers
I'm also descended from clan gunn. This tutorial was brilliant. I'd have liked to have seen the sharpening of the arrowheads etc and other small details but I loved it. Well done!!
Thats awesome! And cheers brother. My crossbow tutorial is a little more detailed, but still, I don't show the sharpening of the arrow tips. Thanks for watching
Outstanding... Really enjoyed that my friend. I think im going to have to watch it another dozen times just to soak up all that information. Loved all the natural materials, pine glue, cordage. lack of tools. That's a real survival bow video. Watched primitive technology's bow video a few nights ago. he pulled a bit of bark off a tree and a glue stick magically appeared in his hand lol. Your making all these big channels look like fools!
Cheers Jacob, that's real kind of you buddy, glad you enjoyed it. Once iv got a bit more practice in, I'll be mainly going after Rabbits. The odd Squirrel if I can, but it's a very small target and I'll no doubt loose a few arrows trying. Other than that, I'd like to harvest a mountain goat if I can get close enough? Thanks, Andy
Hey Andy! I just found your channel and I’m fascinated!! I really want to learn more about survival and I’d love to learn to shoot a bow and arrow! Your voice is also very soothing! Thanks for making this video!! I learned a lot!! Subbed!!!
Cheers Roo Bulgaria was amazing! I'm back in the UK now, but I'm getting back out there in June. Really looking forward to it. Take care brotha and thanks for watching. Andy
I lived out there for four months and rented a small place at the foot of Mount Rila, which is in the Pirin mountain range. The nearest town was Bansko. Beautiful place. I'd planned on scouting out the area and buying a property out there, but the area wasn't right. Iv got a three day trip planned for the end of April to view a few properties in the Balkans. Hoping to own a place by May-June. Take care Too and thanks for watching
Really enjoyed it mate ,been meaning to have ago at making my own bow and arrows, but just need to pull my finger out and get on with it,,if weather is good tomorrow I'm going to go out and cut my stave an arrow shafts ,,,its about time ..we are not legally allowed to hunt with bows in the uk and are restricted to what we can hunt with dogs ,,rabbits an rats been the only legal quarry ,I hunt with dogs, airrifle ,ferrets and catapult,,but am going to make myself a bow an arrow set just because I have the interest to . Again great clip ,,waiting to see you hunt with it.
If feathers are scarce,........use a squirrels, fox tail,.....it slips over the shaft and creates some drag. I find if you soak natural fibers in water they work better,.......my favorite is slender rush. While triangles work,....I go with the morel shape a stem and a point,...or stem and spear pointed. But your arrows shame the archery industry,...meaning they look great. I keep the 90 degree edge of the spine of my knife sharp and use it like a cabinet scraper,......thats the reason I buy a knife like that. But your impressive so I subscribed.
Wow interesting style of bow, it resembles the early Egyptian long bow. This style of bow is called a “whip tipped” bow due to a small working limb section and a large stiff section in the middle.
Haha Thanks Exziver. I think with both of our skills together, we'd not just survive, but thrive out in the wilderness!! They'd come and collect us once we've won and we'd be asking to stay a few more months. They'd be no squirrels left by the time we leave lol. Thanks for watching bro 😊
Because of the angle I could see if he was using the meditation draw(3 fingers under the arrow or 2 below 1 above ) or the thumb release method just curious I would also like to say that I appreciate the information and I hope I can make one half as good as that
Appriciate it buddy, let me know how it goes. I didn't have my shooting glove on me at the time of making this bow, so I used what I believe is called the pinch draw in the demonstration. Normally the pinch draw is drawing back by pinching the arrow between your thumb and index finger. This method is hard with stronger bows like the one I made, so I used my thumb and two fingers to pinch the arrow and draw back. I release by moving my thumb. With a shooting glove I would use the Mediterranean draw... forefinger on the string above the arrow and my middle and ring finger on the string below the arrow. Without a glove it would take the skin off my fingers as I release. Thanks for watching buddy. Andy
OK, I made myself laugh at this so I thought I'd share it. At 13:23 I was thinking "Oh crap he spilled a bunch of wood ash in the fire!", which I immediately realized was probably the dumbest thing I have ever thought.
wow very good video, now i have to go and try that too. Wish you would have shown more detail on how you tied the fledging and points to the arrows, what kind of knot did you use to make it secure?
Thank you, appreciate it brotha. Beautiful country! I'm back in the UK now. Coming back to Bulgaria in August. No, unfortunately I don't teach any classes. Thanks for watching and take care. Andy
I make bows from Greenwood the only thing you have to do let dry for 3 to 7 days before you use it but you have to stain and wax so bow don't split and dry out too fast... My wall is full of these bows they all are still working fine
I really want to give this a go this year but I can't shoot an arrow to save myself - just realised that's quite funny. What would you recommend for a quick way to learn to hit a target, making a bow and just doing lots of shooting or buy a proper setup?
Cheers Andy, you defiantly should. I'd recommend practicing with a cheap fiberglass bow at first. You don't have to spend much on a practice bow, but a factory made bow will be alot more accurate than a survival bow. You can get accuracy off a survival type bow, but it takes alot of practice. The bow in this video shot to the left. With a bit of practice, and compensating by shooting slightly to the right, I was able to hit targets at 15-20 meters. I'm still learning archery myself, planning on spending alot of time in Bulgaria, bow hunting, but there's some great channels hear on UA-cam that give some great tips. On my phone, when I get home, I'll send you a few links to channels I watch. Check them out if you get chance. I'll maybe do a video on it soon... Check out something called... Instinctive shooting. It's basically a method of shooting without sights, like you would have on a compound bow. Take care brotha and thanks for watching.
Hazel is such a heavy fibrous wood and solid. Dude try just fire hardening the tips after sharpening them. No added points. They are still extremely strong and lethal. Small formed resin filled notches with some grounded stone powder etc adds weight if needed near the tip.
Brilliant informative tutorial video bud and a great channel, fare play to your move to Bulgaria, looks like a lovely country, how are the people towards Brits ? and is work easy to get ? atb, Paul. 👍🏻🇬🇧
Thanks Paul, Glad your enjoying my videos brotha. It's breathtaking hear! Everyone iv met has been lovely. Most of the tourists hear, come for the skiing, hiking, camping, that kinda thing, so I think their a little more respectful than the average Brits that go to places like Ibiza and places alike. No one throws up on their doorstep, so I don't think they hate us Brits like other countries do haha. I'm not sure about the work. I'm only hear for four months. Kinda having a break from the grind back home. I'm a plasterer, tiler and painter and I don't think my trades would do so well hear!? Bulgarians in general seem to be a bit more self sufficient. Every house has a bit of land. Livestock, crops. I see them doing their own repairs etc. Their school system teaches them things like, farming and other useful skills that our children don't learn. The UK doesn't want its people to be self sufficient. They want us dependant upon the system. I respect Bulgaria for these things. Thanks for watching and your kind words. Take care bro, Andy
The longer the better really. Modern bows like recurve's can be shorter because there tips are curved away from you, which gives you more power at a shorter length. I wouldn't go shorter than about 4 - 4.5 foot. Any less and you'll loose to much power and won't have a full draw on the bow. You want your draw at around 25" - 29". Thats the distance you draw the bow string back to your ancor point. If you watch anyone shoot a bow, they draw back to the same anchor point each time they shoot. For me, I draw back until the tip of my thumb touches the corner of my mouth (thats my anchor point) I aim, line up my elbow and arm in level with the arrow and release. This repertishion is what gives consistent and accurate shooting. A shorter bow will reduce this draw, which in turn the accuracy of the bow. I make a smaller bow in the same way in my most recent video... Survival crossbow & bolts. If your not an experienced archer? A crossbow is a much better option. I talk about the advantages between them both in the vid. Check it out if you get chance. Thanks for watching Lois, take care
Clan Gunn Bushcraft thanks so much for the detailed reply! I did a bit of archery at school and seemed to have a natural knack for accuracy without much knowledge. I've made around 4 bows now and they all just keep snapping not sure If im making them too thin?! If I make them thicker they don't bend!! It certainly is an art! I'll have a go at your crossbow anyways thanks again
This is exactly what I was looking for. Also with a lot of extra tips, tricks, and knowledge thrown in. I love how you used rocks to sand it and no vice. I mean, I've watched the videos on how to make one in a workshop but this is what I really wanted. Question, what type of wood do you suggest for the bow? That is, hardwood or softwood? I live in New Zealand. We have a lot of pine and birch. Either of those?
Thanks Tim, glad you enjoyed my video. My crossbow video has a little more information and I use Hazel for the prod (bow) on that one... Check it out if you get chance. You want to use hardwood trees to get you're bow timber. Even though Yew is classed as a softwood and it's one of my favorite bow materials, its classed as a hard softwood and has an almost rubber inner cambian layer. Most other softwoods like the pines, spruces and conifers are just to weak and brittle to use for a bow. You can make bows from Birch, but I've never made a birch bow myself. Yew, Hickory, Oak, Ash, Hazel and Osage orange are all good trees to use, but like I said... most hardwoods will do. Thanks and good luck with the bow making. Andy
Hey i know you may heard it before but im a knife person and just say dont scratch and pick up charkole with your knife but is your knife do what you Gonner do and awesome video
Thanks bro, you defantly should. No, not permantly yet. I'll be hear for four months. I'll be buying 30-40+ acres in the Balkan mountains next spring and moving out hear permantly towards the end of next summer. Great channel you've got. Always enjoy your videos. Cheers, Andy

1 question. can you teach us how to hold & fire a bow?
btw really good job with the tutorial!

Andy
Very cool
Why doesn't the bow take any set? Mine takes a lot of set when i tiler it... I used ash seasoned like 7 months.
Hey i know you may heard it before but im a knife person and just say dont scratch and pick up charkole with your knife but is your knife do what you Gonner do and awesome video

Hey brother,
It's been 3 years since you posted this video. I'm curious to know how well and for how long the bow faired.
Hazel is one of the most complete wood for bows... :)
Brilliant video mate
Ive been tempted to make a bow for a while have you moved to bulgaria permenantly ?
Thanks bro, you defantly should. No, not permantly yet. I'll be hear for four months. I'll be buying 30-40+ acres in the Balkan mountains next spring and moving out hear permantly towards the end of next summer. Great channel you've got. Always enjoy your videos.

Andy
Clan Gunn Bushcraft thanks me olde
Your definetly living the dream moving out there next year good luck with the new venture
Cheers brotha 😊
Is birch for bowmaking good?
this is amazing
Cheers Matt and thanks for watching
how come you use the secondary grip versus the mediterranean grip?
I'm self taught. I shoot the way I'm comfortable. Took my first Roe deer of the year last Monday, so it's all good.
Thanks for watching and stay safe
Great video! One question: how come you've moved to Bulgaria?
how do you protect your finger/thumb with a survival bow?
Thick skin
What's your opinion on Pine bows? Are they worth making?
Pine isn't a good timber to use to make a bow. It's a soft wood and it wouldn't hold a very powerful draw weight.
Thanks for watching buddy
